This was, perhaps, at least to her recollection, the first time she was taking a visit to a medical facility for something other than having been injured on the field. Being on the frontlines was funny that way. But it didn't make the nature of the visit any less dreadful.[break]
One of many meetings, check ins, check ups and otherwise on the long list of things that expected and required her compliance.[break][break]
Yuina was of two minds though, always, forever unable to settle. Now more than ever, she needed anything that she could begin to understand about herself. She'd been neglecting it for so long, hiding from herself, that it was now looming over her like a threat. That woman brought her very being into question, and as in everything else, her hand was being forced.[break]
And yet, the very idea of looking to discover more about herself, trying to seek answers, felt like upending everything that she wanted to keep... Couldn't things stay the way that they were for Yuina Higashi... for just a little while longer?[break][break]
"Don't tell me that I have to call you Dr. Sullivan today just because this is for something official," Yuina joked, only just, as she moved to sit on the examination bench. She was just trying to keep her head above water. Her nerves were already shot most days recently, but at least for this visit in accordance to everything she was having to do, it was someone she knew she could trust.

"Ya really need to ask?" He said casually as he turned to her, looking all fancy in the big white coat, stethoscope hanging from his neck. "'Course ya do."

He sounded rather smug about it— specially for someone she knew to not have a legally acquired MD.

"Ms..." He stretched out the words, casually letting his gaze robe down to her file in his clipboard. "Higashi, yeah?"

It was gonna be one of those times, it seemed.

"Tell me." He said, smiling a little too cheekily as he grabbed his swivel chair and brought it close, dropping onto it before her.

"What ails you?"

That was on her. She made the joke, and she should have expected him to take it and run with it. And he did so in earnest as he turned to her clad in exactly what went along with it so well as a Doctor.[break]
"Hmm, you're pretty smug for a doctor," she poked, just a smidge. This was different, they weren't at boot camp where he was wearing his Lieutenant Colonel uniform and could hulk a twenty pound sack at her. She could get away with a couple of things here. And he made it so easy to let everything else fall away...[break][break]
He made a big show of it, looking over the clipboard he held, calling her by her surname, bringing around the wheeled swivel chair to sit in front of her. He was going to lean into this for all it was worth.[break]
"I don't know, Dr. Sullivan," she returned then, hands clasped at the edges of the bench beside her as she at least smiled.[break][break]
"I guess that's what I'm here to find out."

"Well personally, I think I'm just smug enough." He said, nose raised high, as he casually, and very visibly, wrote on his note pad on big, lumpy letters with a marker.

Truly, a work of art, as far as doctors' handwriting went.

Tossing the notepad over his shoulder, he suddenly drew near, the wheels on his swivel chair squealing as he came dangerously close to her, eyeing her up and down with an exaggerated squint.

"Hmm..." He hummed thoughtfully, squeezing at his chin as he examined her very intently.

Before, naturally, shrugging.

"Well, I don't know either to be frank." He admitted with a sigh and a shrug, eyes rolling as he finally pulled back, crossing one leg over the other. "But my bosses want something, so I guess we gotta do everything."

With that in mind, his hand slid beneath his white coat, producing what appeared to be a thin, metal box.

Which upon opening, revealed...

Syringes.

"Don't panic." He said wryly, as he plucked one out, showing the really long, really thin needle. "You won't even feel it. Probably."

Yuina watched on, scrunched nose and tight lips, trying to maintain any slight of composure as he scrawled on the notepad. He was truly impossible.[break]
"Overly sassy? That doesn't sound like a fair diagnosis," she huffed, only a bit indignant. If he was going to lean into it, so could she. That was probably why he still called her cute, and she'd take it.[break][break]
The clipboard clattered against the desk behind him after unceremoniously tossing it back with either surprising accuracy or dumb luck... And then he was right in front of her to begin. She straightened up only out of sheer instinct that something had very suddenly come very close to her, but it was still all part of the show.[break]
He hmmed for a moment before pushing back on the chair, coming to an initial conclusion that she could have guessed too.[break][break]
"That makes two of us...," she sighed, it wasn't as if she very well knew what was wrong with her either. She didn't know... a lot of things about herself, not the least of which being what the league wanted out of all of this. What were they expecting? What did they think examinations and testings would find?[break][break]
It was time to get started though, and there had been a brief moment still that Yuina forgot just how very real it all was. They really needed to do an entire medical examination on her, and get it all filed for results and reports... And it started with the syringe that he held out.[break]
"It'll be fine... you know I've come out of things worse than what a needle prick feels like," she resigned, shifting to start rolling up a sleeve.

"Hey, I've seen veteran soldiers reduced to bawling babies in the face of this bad boy." He said, holding up the syringe once again. "Speaking of worse things, though."

He tied a band around her arm and rubbed some alcohol into the nook of her elbow, working as he spoke.

"I really was off the loop going into the last meetin'." He mused as he tapped gently at her skin until the vein became visible. "Damn near flipped the table on Navidson when he name-dropped ya at said table."

He knew Navy to be a good guy just from his interactions with Eris Halla and Hideo Kino, but that hadn't stopped him from drilling holes into the steel table from anger.

The sound of her stomach dropping was audible. Her skin became instantly pale and cold, and it wasn't because she was about to be stuck by a needle.[break]
"I--," she stammered for a moment, shame, guilt, fear... She couldn't meet his eye.[break][break]
"I wanted to tell you, I should have told you... But I just wanted things to stay they way that they were, even if it was only for a little bit...," she admitted, but she didn't apologize. Both because she wasn't sorry for wanting to hold on to things as they were after he had been gone from her for so long... And because she was sure 'sorry' couldn't even begin to recompense for what she must have caused him at that meeting, from her own selfishness.[break][break]
"I've really messed up," though again, there was no apt way to truly state the gravity of the situation. It was all a storm of her own making, everything that lead to this point was because of her own inaction, and he was caught in the middle of it all.

He usually treated her gently whenever she began to get depressed, but he couldn't well hug her right now— a little too dangerous , what with the syringe and all.

And, unfortunately for Yuina— not even she was immune to Doug's famously 'terrible' (according to Isaac Merlo) bedside manners.

"What are you getting all Yuina for?" He asked casually as he pressed the syringe against her, unwrapping the elastic band around her bicep to allow the blood to flow. "Ya didn't do anything wrong, nerd. I wouldn't have understood even if you had told me at the time, anyway"

He was barely really 'there' at the time, still halfway caught between dream and reality, his head foggy and his mind slow— not that it was all that fast to begin with.

"So don't feel guilty. I'm mad at him anyway." He said, clicking his tongue as he glared at the ceiling, clearly imagining a very punchable face. "Bringing ya up on the terms he did was dumb as hell."

But then, he wasn't exactly an unbiased actor here; bringing her up at AQUA at all was 'stupid' as far as he was concerned.

It didn't matter how much preparation could go into knowing a needle was going to sink into her skin, it was jarring all the same. The sting was icy cold, and burned as her teeth clenched. She sucked in a breath as her other hand flexed against the edge of the exam bench.[break][break]
Doug spoke easily still, working with the syringe was second nature to him, as if he were merely stirring cream into a coffee as they chatted. He spoke easily, as if he truly believed she'd done nothing wrong in any of this, but she was not faultless, not by a long shot. And the idea that he could so easily sweep aside any notion that she was anything other than the person he saw was infinitely more painful than the needle stuck in her arm.[break][break]
"Is that your official diagnosis as a doctor? That I haven't done anything wrong," she wondered. Were doctors contested on a diagonsis or conclusion that they might come to?[break][break]
"Don't blame him Doug... Navy is just doing his job. I don't know exactly what that rocket told him, but it's not his fault that that's how he found out," Yuina digressed. She didn't resent Navy, for any of this, as much as she felt like she should... Her hand had been forced on all of this, it was a perfect snowball effect, but if she hadn't been hiding all of her cards up to this point, it wouldn't have spiraled the way that it had.[break]
In the end... she didn't resent Navy... in fact, he was the only one that she trusted would do the right thing by those she had come into contact with if something happened... And he promised he would.[break][break]
"I don't know what she wants with me... but it can't be anything good."

"Uh-uh-uh. Nothing wrong by not telling me." He continued, more direct than usual. "Though, even if ya did do somethin'— I'm sure you had a reason."

He scrunched his nose, tongue sticking out in distaste as he pulled out the now full syringe, separating the vial full of blood and storing it with the appropriate name and data before unceremoniously shoving the now used syringe into a tip-burner, then disposing of the rest.

"Yeah, well, his job is being a cop, so." He said, rolling his eyes. "Only so much good one can do there, whatever their intentions are."

There was a reason he had jumped to the Medic corps. If he was to be a dog of the state, he could at least try to minimize the damage he'd inevitably have to cause; since the league was averse to plans that didn't involve double-edged swords.

Inevitably though, the topic of that woman came up, and with it, the reminder of everything she had said. His lip curled, a hum leaving his mouth as he pulled out a tongue depressor and unceremoniously pressed it to her lips.

"If she was honest, and I hope she wasn't, she doesn't 'want' anything." He said, before narrowing his eyes. "But that'd be a buncha bollocks even if she did believe it herself."

She was clearly wanting something, even if it was mere spectacle. The woman appeared to him to have some sort of obsession or morbid curiosity about Yuina, for better or worse.

"You'll be meetin' Professor illeana reyes after these exams." He said. "The triad woman seems able of going anywhere, anytime, so we definitely should ask Dr. Reyes for her thoughts."

Yuina was holding a lot of tension in her shoulders as the needle held its place in her arm for that time, and as it was withdrawn she released a breath, the tension, if only a little bit. Tensions were high, and continued to escalate still every day... It wasn't as if she were allowed to rest easy most days.[break][break]
She chewed at the inside of her cheek at the small admonishment, but she didn't contest anything, she deserved it. She'd done a lot of things wrong, though her reasons were little to be desired perhaps.[break]
Before she could say anything more, she was met with a tongue depressor to her lips, an effective way to muddle her thoughts with distraction. She sat still as he spoke, regarding that woman, their most recent encounter with her, all of the cryptic words she spared them and for what? They knew as much after the fact as they did before, and all the while it still felt like nothing.[break][break]
When the tongue depressor was relinquished, Yuina grimmaced against the taste of wood in her mouth.[break]
"Right... Palkia's avatar...," she muttered, one half of the cosmos... and the other half a dark blue draconic crest. Her skin grew warm at the thought, the vision...[break][break]
"You told me once that you sought out Lele," Yuina recalled, wondering, contemplative.[break]
"Did you know then that she would choose you? Had you interacted with her at all before she did," she questioned, though the deity was still a sour subject, Yuina just... wondered if she could draw some parallels.

He didn't show much of a reaction, but the silence alone should've said plenty about what was going through his head.

His eyes shut for a moment.

"No. I didn't know anything." He said simply, his eyes finally sliding open as he threw the depressor into a trash bin, moving on to the next step by putting on his stethoscope. "Hell. Mr. Silph specifically told me to stay away from her when I asked him about it."

Just another notch on the endless list of things FERNANDO SILPH had been right about.

"Anyway. If I were to be charitable... I guess I'd say I was being young and a dumb, really." He said as he brought it against her chest to hear for a heart beat.

"There was this girl I really liked." He said. "She was like my very own a manic pixie dream girl. Everything was fun when she was around— and she didn't seem to mind me sticking to her like vermin, even poor, lanky and cringey as I was."

He hummed.

"And she was going to die."

It was a stark reminder, how small her life still was, how little she had sacrificed, how little she had done to be deserving of much of anything. She listened, she'd asked the question otherwise unprompted, and she wasn't sure what the answer was going to be, but even as she knew him now it sounded so much like him that she couldn't have been surprised. Everything he did, every single thing that Doug did was for someone else. Even this, as he stooped a bit to listen to her heart as the next step in the examination. He said it was for his 'bosses', and that was true enough... but Yuina knew that he was the one that was doing it because it was for her.[break][break]
"Chosen doesn't seem to be exactly the right word then," Yuina murmured, not in the typical sense it seemed like, compared to others and what their patronage was like. Though it wasn't as if she had any room or reference to draw conclusions.[break][break]
The way he said he was young and dumb though, where he had made this selfless endeavor for the well being of someone else...[break]
"If you were there again-- now, would you," another question that she had no business prompting really, but she was grasping at straws at this point, with little else that she could possibly do to help herself, that dark blue draconic crest was the only outlier. But to seek it out... what would happen?

"Hey, I was chosen alright." He said wryly, before snorting. "Though perhaps not for the reasons I thought."

'The Jinxed', huh?

It left a bad taste in his mouth, but he couldn't argue with its accuracy.

Perhaps winning the tournament had nothing to do with Tapu Lele's choice— made sense, she didn't seem like the kind to keep track of such things.

So what did that mean...?

He shrugged to himself after a moment, dismissing the thought as he reached into a cabinet, opened it, and fetched out a sphygmomanometer.

"No." He said simply, as he opened the cuff and began fitting it to her arm.

"It was a dumb, reckless, and selfish choice." He said bluntly as he began to squeeze the bulb.

It did not sound like he considered his actions 'selfless'— nor for anyone else other than himself..
