Why was he so nervous?[break][break]

He didn’t know.[break][break]

All he was certain of was that this… this was just a meeting between friends, right? Right?[break][break]

Then why the hell was Alexei so fucking nervous?! He didn’t know why, but there was the sensation of his stomach flipping over—and in the excited kind of way, mind—whenever he saw Florian.[break][break]

No, calm down, calm down, calm the hell down! He shrieked in the back of his head as he dressed up in a hurry. Of course, the crazy red sweater with the reindeer made a reappearance; however this time he made sure to dress much more warmly with a pair of thermal jeans and snow boots. He then picked out a classic white scarf, draped it over his shoulders and wound it a few times, before twirling in front of the mirror as he readied himself.[break][break]

While it was nuts to even give away one of his scarves, there was one particular number he knew would look absolutely perfect on Florian—as it brought out the blue of the other man’s eyes. Not to mention it was decorated with stars and sparkled like the night sky.[break][break]

He knew it was going to be a smash hit.[break][break]

Now, all he had to do now was to get to Slateport, go to the place where they were supposed to meet up, and wait for him.[break][break]

Was he too early? He had no idea.[break][break]

He’d resorted to Teleporting there instead of flying, and swapped out once he arrived at the Pokémon Center. Making sure he still had the gift with him, he then dusted himself down of any snowflakes before squaring his shoulders and going to the mall.[break][break]

While not as big as the one in Lilycove, this mall had quite a number of cafés in them, and he knew how big cafes were in Kalos—so why not meet up there?

It's been a long time since he's been on a date of any kind, even a platonic one; Florian thinks it must be natural to be so anxious, fixing his hair for the umpteenth time in the mirror. He's a performer, he likes to look good and to show off — that's why he's dressed in his best, stardust smudged beneath his eyes. Joli sits on the counter as Florian dolls himself up, swatting playfully at the silk scarf Florian's tucked around his neck.[break][break]

"You are going to make me late," Florian scolds, but there's no malice in his tone as he scratches his Sylveon behind the ears.[break][break]

It's not a long way from Verdanturf to Slateport, but Florian realises upon checking the time that he'll be late if he relies upon his intended method of transport. Juliette is new to his family, and he's not had the time to test out her capabilities on flights, but...[break][break]

"Can you do this for me, darling?"[break][break]

The Togekiss coos as she's released on the lawn, stretching her broad white wings. She's healthy and hale and doesn't seem tired, having apparently just woken from a nap, so Florian swallows his concerns and climbs aboard.[break][break]

"To Slateport, my dear!"[break][break]

They arrive on time, but Florian's vanity demands that he take a quick trip to the restroom in order to straighten out his windswept hair, and he's a couple minutes late by the time he's satisfied enough to approach his friend at the table.[break][break]

"I am so sorry for the delay!" He sits down across from Alexei and offers him a broad smile, hopes that he's made up for his tardiness with his perfect hair and straightened clothes. They're all Kalosian imports, as lavish and grand as to be expected from a nation of performers. Not wanting to admit that his vanity was the reason, he comes up with a quick excuse. "I flew here on my Juliette; we stopped to rest halfway through."[break][break]

He feels bad even for a little white lie, but how would it look if he admitted he'd spent far too long on hair and makeup?[break][break]

"It is good to see you. That scarf looks wonderful, by the way!" He relaxes, the tension bleeding from his shoulders as they relax. "I do hope you were not starving in my absence! This cafe is very nice... have you been before?"

Try to imagine a cabinet storage file open, blazing with flames, and lots of little people running around and screaming.[break][break]

That’s definitely Alexei’s state of mind at the moment.[break][break]

He didn’t notice the menu being dropped in front of him on the table the moment he had secured a table because his mind was wandering towards so many scenarios all at once. It was like his imagination was on overdrive, only because of the sheer implications he was going on a date—even if it was a platonic date, he was still worried about so many things.[break][break]

Why was he stressing himself out so much?![break][break]

He very nearly jumped a mile into the air the moment he saw Florian arrive—and then his ears decided to act up on their own accord and go off like a fire alarm. The fact that his eyes wandered to the eye shadow the other had on, and the clothes… crap, why did he suddenly feel so underdressed for today?![break][break]

“N-no, you’re alright, I only got here like… five minutes before you did,” he began with a nervous chuckle and a smile. The fact that the eyeshadow perfectly matched the present he was going to be giving the other made his ears burn red even more, and Arceus, if he didn’t look so perfect he would have—[break][break]

No, Alexei! Calm down! He thought, his mind going way too fast, too soon. Calm down! Take it slow and easy! He mentally chastised himself in the back of his head. Returning his attention to Florian, he then gestured at the menu.[break][break]

“I was actually waiting for you so we could pick things out to try from the menu. I—I didn’t want to seem so rude ordering without you.”[break][break]

Smooth, Alexei.[break][break]

Real smooth right there.

they're just all nervous and adorable

Florian notices as Alexei's violet gaze flicks up to the smudge of starlight beneath his eyes, finding himself suddenly self-conscious in spite of his urge to perform and impress. Blush colours his cheeks and he ducks his head with a quiet laugh to hide it, relieved that Alexei seemed equally as nervous. That meant it was normal to be so flustered, right?[break][break]

"I'm glad you didn't have to wait long."[break][break]

Alexei gestures at the menu, and Florian's glad for an excuse to look away for a moment as he glances at it. It seems to offer pretty standard fare for the cafes of the region. Nothing will ever compare to Kalos, but it incites a certain nostalgia nevertheless.[break][break]

"That's sweet of you, I appreciate it." He looks up to smile at his friend. It might have been common courtesy to order together when dining at a cafe, but Florian had been late. Alexei didn't have to wait for him, and yet he had. "What were you thinking? I am thinking I definitely want something warm, the flight was quite a chilly one!"[break][break]

That's to say nothing of the heat under his collar, nervous energy gathering in the pit of his stomach.[break][break]

“I was informed that the hot chocolate here is their best-seller,” he said as he gratefully hid his face behind the menu. He had to, because his ears were burning up with blush and Arceus, he couldn’t stop the giddy sensation he was experiencing! What the hell![break][break]

“The weather does throw a certain wrench into everything, don’t you think?” he agreed, quickly making his choices as he glanced through the menu. “Oh, and, uhm, no need to worry about paying, I’ll—I’ll cover the bill,” he offered from behind the menu.[break][break]

Here’s to hoping the friendly little gesture wouldn’t backfire![break][break]

Before Florian would notice, Alexei eyed the little package he’d brought along with him, and had to keep his face hidden behind the café menu as he gathered the courage to actually speak because what the hell, he didn’t seem to be in the right state of mind today![break][break]

“I… I have something for you. I meant to give it to you after the Ball, but…” he stammered, words utterly failing him as he lowered the menu and reached for the paper bag beside him before sliding it across the table in the other man’s direction.[break][break]

Shit, I hope you like it! He thought frantically. After all, it wasn’t every day he gave anything away—more so if it was from his own scarf collection.

"Hot chocolate it is, then!"[break][break]

It seems like the perfect solution to chase away the winter's chill. Florian flips through the menu to view their selection of various little pastries and sandwiches, a soft rumble in his stomach reminding him it's been a while since he'd eaten anything. He'd been so anxious in preparing for the outing that he'd skipped breakfast! Oops.[break][break]

Florian looks up sharply from the menu — thankfully, the menu Alexei hides behind also shields him from the brief flash of alarm in the professors eyes.[break][break]

Don't be stupid, Florian scolds himself. This was a friendly outing, and Alexei was simply being nice.[break][break]

"Oh, it's all right!" he insists, not realising that Alexei is having an internal dilemma of his own. "That's incredibly nice of you, but I-I don't mind paying." Oh, dear. Would Alexei be offended that he'd refused? Anxiety is far more effective than the promise of hot chocolate in chasing away the cold. His collar burns. "U-Unless you really want to, of course! I-I'm fine either way!"[break][break]

The gift catches him further off guard. It's been a long time since someone's been this nice to him, and even then, such kindness had carried an expectation of—[break][break]

The scarf is beautiful, soft in his hands. His throat has closed up. His eyes sting. He's not going to cry.[break][break]

He blinks several times, at a loss for words.[break][break]

"A-Alexei, this is beautiful," he says at last, whisper-soft. The colour matches his eyes, his make-up. It suits him perfectly. The professor tastes blood from where he'd bit the inside of his lip. He's not going to cry, damn it. "A-Are you sure?"

Bless the menus, since they were good to hide behind. He was still blushing behind his own menu while waiting for Florian to answer if he wanted anything else?[break][break]

Once he’d made himself stop blushing the fuck to all shit, he looked over the top of the menu he was hiding behind. “Hey… are you sure you’re not hungry?” he asked gently, hoping he wasn’t intruding or anything.[break][break]

He wasn’t sure if he was stepping on anyone’s toes or something, but there you have it…
