Florian examines his arm in the mirror, sleeve rolled up to reveal an unsightly red scar along his bicep. It troubles him less and less as the days go by, but it's a physical reminder of the ball: of his skiing trip, of the celebration, of the avalanche—[break][break]

Most importantly, it's a reminder of what didn't happen.[break][break]

He carefully tugs his sleeve back down and dabs floral cologne at the base of his throat, feels his pulse flutter beneath his touch. He winds the star-patterned scarf around his neck with great care, smiling at his reflection in the mirror as he preens himself, a peacock fluffing out its tail feathers. He'd gone through the trouble to purchase a new suit for the occasion; the one he'd worn to the ball had been a favourite, but with how Alexei had reacted to the blood and panic... he didn't think it was a good idea to wear it again so soon.[break][break]

He'd arranged to meet the other man in Slateport's Night Market, where they were currently gearing up to bring in the new year with fireworks and a grand celebration. Hopefully this one would end without disaster or injury![break][break]

He takes great pains to be early, this time, and he offers Alexei a broad smile when he spots the other man.[break][break]

"I owe you a dance," he laughs, offering a dramatic twirl. "I heard there would be dancing, here; I thought it was perfect!"[break][break]

Joli chirps at Alexei, and Florian giggles.[break][break]

"I hope you brought your Sylveon along! I think my darling is excited to meet her!"[break][break]

He certainly looks excited, all though that's thanks in part to the myriad of treats he'd gotten to sample during the wait! Even now, the market is alive with a tantalizing medley of aromas that make Florian's mouth water. He'd avoided the urge to partake in any festivities himself, wanting to experience the bulk of them with Alexei.[break][break]

Of course he was a stammering mess when Florian had asked him to meet one late afternoon down at Slateport.[break][break]

While the blonde didn’t reveal the exact reason why they were meeting, he was just told to wear something nice and to be there by a certain time![break][break]

This was easier said than done, of course.[break][break]

For starters, he had to look for a nice-looking suit that didn’t look too weird or too out of place on him—not knowing that they would look more than a little out of place when they got to the actual venue.[break][break]

He was familiar with festivals, and unlike the Ren Faire that had a habit of constantly setting up shop near Fortree’s limits, this one was anything goes. Thankfully, he managed to find a decent-enough get-up to not look so plain when he was with Florian. Making sure that the turtleneck didn’t fit too tightly was a challenge, too.[break][break]

Eventually, he managed to pick out a nice set of dark skinny jeans and threw on a nice jacket, before winding one of his thematic scarfs around his shoulders. He also didn’t know that Florian was going to be wearing the galaxy-themed one, so this was going to be a surprise for him, too…[break][break]

Once he was ready, he took the faster way to Slateport, Teleporting rather than flying and arriving near the Pokémon Center and quickly ducking inside to swap out the Gardevoir for his Sylveon—he did promise the other that Joli was going to meet the ‘madness incarnate’, his own Sylveon, Dysha.[break][break]

He slipped into the crowd and eventually caught sight of him, and for some reason his ears went off into the criminally-red shade once more the moment he heard Florian addressing him.[break][break]

“I sure hope so. Look at everything! It’s so colorful. You’ll get to experience how Hoenn rings in the New Year, too,” he began, enthusiastic. At the mention of the Sylveon, he cracks an even wider grin.[break][break]

“Of course. She’s right here. Would you want to meet her now, or maybe later? When she gets loose she’s like a rocket on sugar. Always wanting cuddles,” he added jokingly. Now that they were here… where the heck were they going to start?![break][break]

“You want to get a mask or something?” he asked.[break][break]

Of course, he’d set aside more than enough of his savings for this day.[break][break]

This was going to be perfect!

florian is all about masks

"Yes!" Florian responds with enthusiasm, blue eyes lit up bright as the fireworks that occasional crackle overhead. "I am excited to learn of all Hoenn's traditions. It is so different here than back home... but that is a good thing!"[break][break]

If there was anything Florian loved, it was experiences. There was no feeling quite like the adrenaline rush of trying something new, especially with a dear friend![break][break]

He laughs at the idea of a Sylveon tearing through the festivities; if Dysha was as crazy as Alexei implied, it could certainly lead to excitement!

"Perhaps later, then," he chuckles, "when we can keep a better eye on her!"
[break][break]
There were a lot of people out celebrating the new year, after all, and it could be dangerous to lose site of your Pokemon for even a second! Florian is less worried about Joli, for his own Sylveon is practically glued to his leg. If it got too hectic, Florian wasn't above the idea of carrying the pink-and-white Pokemon in his arms for a while. He wasn't about to return his partner to his pokeball unless he absolutely had to.

"Masks?" he repeats. "Oh, that sounds like fun! Is that one of the traditions?" He gestures for Alexei to lead the way to wherever they were going, trusting that the gym leader could navigate far better than a foreigner. "Masks, they remind me of the masquerade balls we would have in Kalos!" Kalosians were known for their theatrics, after all, and for their desire to show off and stand out. What better way than a ball where everyone hid their face? "I wore a Vivillon mask to the last one; I wonder if I brought it in the move?"

There were several boxes left at home, unpacked, for he did not spend a great deal of time indoors. Heck, half the time he even slept outside... though not as much lately, thanks to the weather.

“I’ve lived here for the past ten years, so I know my way around,” he admitted sheepishly.[break][break]

True, with each year the offerings were mostly the same, but last year had been interesting—there were shrines one could pray at, as well as write on little strips of paper for good luck.[break][break]

His wish from last year, thankfully, had come true—even if he was a little overzealous on watching where he was going because he didn’t want to hurt himself. At least he was still alive and whole, and that’s what mattered![break][break]

“There’s lots of stalls selling them—oh, look!” Alexei pointed out, where a hawker had a literal wall of masks for sale. Spotting the trader, he moved quickly through the crowd, hopefully Florian was able to keep up.[break][break]

The moment he’d arrived at the wall of masks, there was quite the variety—some looked like those fancy masks worn to parties, yet there were also designs sprinkled here and there modeled after Pokémon.[break][break]

“Aw, look!” he pointed out, lifting up what he instantly recognized as a Sylveon mask. “You want it?” he inquired, turning around and showing Florian the mask he’d spotted.[break][break]

“You and Joli would look like twins, if you get it!” he added a few moments later. It was here he noticed that the other man was wearing the same scarf he’d gifted previously. For some reason it made his ears suddenly burn up with blush, and his cheeks turned pink.[break][break]

Oh Arceus, he’s wearing it! He thought, his mind panicking yet at the same time he was… excited. Hopeful? Definitely!

Much as Florian was eager to experience all that Hoenn had to offer, and as willing as he'd been to weather such experiences on his own, it was a relief to have befriended someone so soon after his move. In Kalos, he'd been surrounded by people he knew... and yet with such a small amount of time spent in Hoenn, it was already beginning to feel like home.[break][break]

"Ohh!"[break][break]

Alexei draws his attention to a booth selling various masks, and the professor eagerly allows himself to be led in that direction. He's busy giggling over a Mimikyu mask — what a novelty, to disguise oneself as a Pokemon in disguise! — when Alexei finds the Sylveon one.[break][break]

"Oh, yes," he gushes, wiggling his fingers in a silent request for Alexei to hand it over. He fumbles for his wallet with the other hand. "Absolutely I do!"

He knew the Sylveon mask was going to be a great hit.[break][break]

Grinning, he handed it over to Florian, before he took out his own wallet. “Whatever he takes, I’m paying for,” he said quickly to the stall owner before the blonde could get his own money out. Turning back to Florian, he added, “I insist,” he continued.[break][break]

For some strange reason his ears started to heat up at the mention of that, but he paid it no mind. He was too busy looking for a mask that would catch his attention. While there were masks of Pidgeys and Spearows and heck, even a Pikipek or two—it was the Braviary-themed one that caught his attention.[break][break]

Thanks to his height he didn’t have to ask the owner to reach for it, instead plucking it from its perch himself and then peering at Florian through the eye holes.[break][break]

“Wark wark,” he teased, before popping his face out one side and chuckling. “You think this one looks good?” he asked, twirling the Braviary mask around and checking it for any imperfections.[break][break]

He caught sight of the next stall he wanted to take the blonde man to—there was a booth reminiscent of the Magikarp one that he frequented a few months before during the summer holidays, and he didn’t even catch a single golden Magikarp during that time. What a shame.[break][break]

“Hey, after this, you want to try your luck at catching a ‘goldfish’?” he inquired, tilting his head in the direction of the Magikarp fishing booth.

Florian's cheeks flush crimson and he quiets his protests, noticing that Alexei's already got his wallet out and that the booth attendant has switched focus to the taller man.

He tries to convince himself of this, glad that the mask hides the sudden doubt in his expression. His fingers toy with the edges of the scarf, and Joli leans against his trainer's calf in silent support.

He regulates his breathing as Alexei puzzles over a mask of his own, glad for the other's distraction so that he has time to gather himself.

Alexei was nothing like him. It would be an insult to compare the two. He knows that, but his heart rate — his racing thoughts — beg to differ.

By the time Alexei turns back with the Braviary mask, he's smiling bright. He giggles at Alexei's imitation of the Pokemon's cry, shaking his head.
His friend truly was adorable... nothing like the other to which he was so unfairly compared.

"It suits you perfectly!" What better mask for a lord of the skies? "Do you have a Braviary? Oh, I would love to try that game! I've never actually been fishing before..."

“Of course I do! He’s the very first Pokémon I found on the roadside while I was still in Unova. He—he’s been with me the longest, since I was sixteen. So much time has passed since then, to be fair,” he reminisced as he tied the string of the mask behind his head and tilted it to one side so it wasn’t honking him in the face.[break][break]

Surely Florian may be wondering why he mentioned sixteen, and not ten, as most everyone started their journeys. He supposed he owed a little explanation.[break][break]

“Well, to put it simply I started my journey pretty late as compared to everyone else. I bet you also started much later than ten, am I right?” he inquired as he led the way to the Magikarp booth. “What with being a Professor and all.”[break][break]

Okay, okay, calm down, why are you blushing?! He thought to himself as he tried his hardest not to catch Florian’s eye. He was as red as a watermelon’s insides, and why was that?[break][break]

He had no idea![break][break]

“Are you ready to try and catch a Magikarp?” he chuckled once they were close enough to the booth in question.

Sixteen.

A long time ago, now. An age of figuring himself out, of discovery and fear. And not an age where he'd had Pokemon to call his own; had Alexei not called attention to it himself, the professor wouldn't have thought his story strange at all.[break][break]

Alexei leads the way to the Magikarp booth, and Florian adjusts the Sylveon mask to better see out of the eyeholes.[break][break]

"Yes," he confirms. "I was — in my twenties when I got Joli."[break][break]

The Sylveon trotting at his feet chirps at the sound of his name.[break][break]

Unbeknownst to Alexei, Florian's journey had started late for more reasons than one — but he's content to accept Alexei's convenient explanation, nodding along as if to confirm it.[break][break]

"Is it very difficult?" he asks of the Magikarp game, watching a father-and-son try their hand. His smile is coy. "Perhaps you should show me."

“Well… it should be easy, however there’s something with the nets—“ Alexei explained, watching as the son had barely managed to scoop up one of the smaller Magikarp before it fell through and splashed back into the water.[break][break]

“…yeah, the ‘nets’ are made of paper so it might be kind of… cheating?” he added with a shrug.[break][break]

“But there are some people who can catch a lot of goldfish even with paper-lined nets… how they do it is something that’s beyond me altogether. Who knows if one of us has the hand for fishing?” he went on with a chuckle as they waited for the people in front of them to move on to another booth so they could have their turn.[break][break]

“Well, here goes nothing, I guess,” he said presently as he handed a paper net to the other man.[break][break]
