Gavin scoffs, the only attention paid to the pitiful insult.

When he next looks back at the boy, River is stroking a fish like one might pet a cat, and Gavin shakes his head before turning away.

Omastar shrieks, an awful and jarring sound that tears out from the confines of a Tyrunt's strong jaws. With no shell to protect it, Omastar is at the mercy of the Tyrunt's powerful crunch.

"Cradily!" he commands, sharp.

The eerie Pokemon swings its large head toward the offender. It's not a powerful match-up, but the giga drain is enough to draw the Tyrunt's attention and make it drop its prize. Omastar retaliates of its own accord; as Cradily draws upon an ancient power, the mollusc fires off a hydro pump that knocks Tyrunt on its rump.

Gavin throws a pokeball, watching as his Omastar scuttles over to an abandoned shell upon the shore and retreats within it.

River nearly drops the Finneon in his arms at the sudden and horrible screaming that ensues between the Omastar and a wild Tyrunt. He'd never seen a dinosaur up close, and even though the little tyke was so small, it was clear he meant business.[break][break]

Gavin's Pokemon do eventually make short work of their target, but something bumps River from behind. In fact, the bump is so forceful that he's knocked into the water after it![break][break]

It seemed a wild Cloyster was out on the shore looking for prey or whatever the case might be, and had accidentally stumbled upon River and his new Finneon.[break][break]

Shinx paces back and forth at the surface, unsure what to do in this situation. Surely if she electrocuted the water, River would be hurt by it too, right?[break][break]

She eventually does it away, and the Cloyster spits the boy back up onto the shore. He coughs and spits and scrambles, laying flat on his back with an exasperated and painful expression on his face.[break][break]

The Cloyster, meanwhile, had been absorbed into another pokeball of his - hopefully he wouldn't have to go through that again.[break][break]

Gavin doesn't notice the two Pokemon in the water, nor the one on the shore that's preoccupied itself with eating the Rocket's travelling companion. He takes advantage of the lull in activity to wander over to his Omastar and inspect its new shell.

"You alive in there?"

He taps the shell, and a gurgling protest is echoed back at him from deep within the confines. Alive. Grumpy, and wounded, but alive, and that was what mattered.

"Good."

He stands up and brushes sand from his trousers... and that's when he spots River, lying on the beach with a pinched expression. He's coughing and sputtering and drenched, and Gavin stares at him, blinking.

"Hell happened to you?"

It takes River a while to recover, focusing on deep breaths as his black and white spotted vision resumes colour. He's suddenly very clammy and cold as his jeans stick to his legs and his sweater hangs off his body.[break][break]

Slowly but surely, the boy starts to get back on his feet, pulling the damp neck of his sweater off of his neck. [break][break]

"I always knew I was a snack."[break][break]

He says this in response to Gavin's question, and doesn't explain further. Shinx paces at his feet before hopping up into his arms to warm him up. The boy has since returned the newly captured Finneon and Cloyster.[break][break]

When a Mantine and Remoraid pair breach the water, he's oblivious to it.[break][break]

Gavin doesn't keep up with whatever slang terms teenagers are using these days, and so River's comment baffles him more than anything. He stares at the kid, wondering if he'd taken a good hit to the brain on the way down.

He's alive, at least, in spite of his blathering, so Gavin doesn't need to worry about hiding a body.

"Another one of those damn birds that ate your Shinx behind you," he points out, gesturing. He's not familiar enough with the Galarian species to know their names. "Don't know what the hell it's got in its mouth, though."

River turns just in time to meet whatever it is that Gavin's talking about. The Cramorant seems to cough and sputter, choking on the fish in its throat. With a gasp, the boy is knocked clean off his feet by the Arrokuda as its shot like a bullet. It slaps him across his face and he's winded and with a painful welt on his cheek.[break][break]

"Ouch, what the fuck, man."[break][break]

He rubs his cheek painfully as the fish flaps miserably on the sand. When the boy gets back to his feet, he makes no effort to hide how aggressively he kicks the fish back into the water. [break][break]

The Cramorant seemed to have disappeared, however.[break][break]

"I hate this place."[break][break]

It's only his poise and Galarian breeding that keeps Gavin from howling with laughter as the Cramorant spits Arrokuda like a bullet into River's face. He doesn't feel sorry for him in the least; the little shit deserved it![break][break]

His laughter is, instead, composed — a quiet chuckle in the back of his throat as River proclaims his disdain for the location.[break][break]

"I don't know what you mean," he insists, smirking. "I think it's fantastic."

River winces as he rubs his jaw, the bruise already blossoming on his pale cheek. He rolls his shoulder painfully, having jerked it uncomfortably when he'd hit the ground so hard. [break][break]

The limp in his step is mimicked by a Pokemon not far behind him. It's lilypad head teeters this way and that as it approached, and River pauses to look at it with a note of disgust on his face. When he stops, the Lombre stops as well, with great drama.[break][break]

"What the fuck?"[break][break]

Another step follows another from the wild Pokemon as it continues to perform its

teeter dance

. The dizzying display has begun to give the boy a headache, and he finds himself slurring his speech in some manner as he points at the Pokemon.[break][break]

"Shinx, st-stop that thing."[break][break]

The tiny lion cub springs forward on light feet, biting down hard on the Pokemon's sombrero hat with a

thunder fang

. It takes a great deal of effort, however, to eventually topple the Pokemon over. By that time, River has held his head in his hands to try and force out the weird confusion he was experiencing. [break][break]

When it clears, he throws a pokeball at the downed Lombre.[break][break]

In truth, he doesn't go out of his way to be, as River puts it, a 'shit person', but there is a certain level of satisfaction that comes with ticking off this particular individual. River was a brat that drove him up the wall at times, and the scientist enjoyed getting under his skin.[break][break]

His humour fades somewhat as he notes that River seems particularly affected, clutching his head and slurring his speech. Was it the Lombre that had done that, or a side-effect of being effectively punched in the face by a fish? Much as he'd jested about murdering the kid, covering up his death would be horribly inconvenient.[break][break]

"Are you quite all right?" he asks dryly, a hint of Galarian piercing through the neutrality of his accent.[break][break]

A lurking Octillery goes ignored as the scientist focuses full attention on River.
