In all honesty, Kaida thought, the Corsola of this city were so important, she had to wonder how one didn't see this disaster coming. Predators had to eat, and they would take any and all opportunities to seize their prey. It was only natural.

Nonetheless, it was still her job to make sure the Corsola wouldn't get eaten, they had to stay plentiful and a mass eating could drop their population horribly...and sink the city of people, of course. She remembered that small goal.

Her Pokeballs exploded open to release her Pokemon, all but Kjoll. An Onix was useless for today, so it would have to be everyone else. On the dock, she grimaced slightly. None of her own had the means to inflict effective damage immediately, but she would simply need to keep an eye on them, they were effective fighters.

All that was left was a partner, and a partner she desperately didn't want to be near. She might throw her into the water with the Marinenie if she had to be with such a person...but she didn't have a choice. So she waited with her Pokemon crowded around herself, ready to start the mission early if need be.

[attr="class","threadIris"]iris had never been popular. work always came first, and in her few moments of reprieve she'd find herself preparing for the next task. there were moments father would push her to socialise with the other children with rocket, but they were few and far between. besides, iris was modest enough to know the drawbacks of her personality.

Kaida jumped slightly as her work partner for today approached, then steeled her face. No worries, this was just a human she'd hopefully have no problems with, or ever have to work with so personally again.. Bad, but she was a partner for today. Her face betrayed nothing as she quickly spoke downwards towards Ormr and the others, "Watch the water." and then swept herself around, looking for all the world an uncaring, serious senior.

"Iris." She bowed her head slightly downwards in the respect she was required to show her fellows, leveling a second nod towards the Mudkip, face relaxing to the Pokemon, lips no longer of the verge of pulling back in a snarl, "Good that you're here, they're close." There was no telling how close the invasive predators were, so she spoke quickly. "...you will be important. Mine can swim, but yours is better. Keep them off the Corsola, and I'll take the rest...don't kill them till necessary...I'll do it if so." She was no stranger to such necessary evils, and hoped that her words carried the weight she felt.

A hiss sounded behind her, and she sighed. "Very close now." She felt an almost relief, to not need to talk, only hunt. That was fine, even with Iris.

[attr="class","threadIris"]she doesn't react to the hostile (because that was what it was, no matter how veiled) reception, it isn't of important anyway. blue chirps happily at his small moment of attention.

iris approaches the water's edge, though keeps a safe distance as instructed. at her motion, blue dips into the water, the mudkip floating half-submerged in the water as it awaited its trainers command. the mission was straightforward, though a stretch further enough she didn't feel restless or set with a meaningless task.

the first of their foes approaches. blue goes under. iris considers the ranger's previous words. "surely a warning attack won't be able to deter them?" they were an invasive species, she couldn't imagine why there'd be a problem with exterminating them.

That was a good point, and Kaida's eyes fell slightly, coming across the invaders in her eyesight. "That...could be true." She shrugged, "But if they fail enough, they'll stop trying to hunt here. I hope." So her goal was to be a bit apathetic, it seemed. She wouldn't take the most final solution first, not her first time meeting the Pokemon.

A purple and blue head, face scowling suddenly created over the water near where Blue had descended, and Kaida pointed sternly towards it, "All of you will leave." Her voice carried the weight of the fact she was asking, she was promising. Predictably, it frowned in defiance and Kaida directed her Pokemon to the water, "Go hunting. Be soft."

Ormr sprung, the most eager to get into an altercation, and quick as a flash landed a Bite onto the Mareanie's tentacle, quickly being pulled under only to surface in a second, torn off tentacle spat to the side. "Don't kill them, make them too scared to come back." She clarified shortly as more Mareanies surfaced and made a beeline towards their enemies. "Let's not let them close." As the words left her lips, Silk snorted sand at the approaching Pokemon, hoping to slow them.

[attr="class","threadIris"]iris doesn't have much hope for this plan, but she knows when to keep her mouth shut. the girl stands obediently, feet just shy of the water, looking down to see how her pokemon was doing.

despite the league's limitations, she had managed to train her pokemon well. the mudkip creates a small but potent whirlpool, sucking in a handful of mareanie as the waters swirled. adachi's sentiment was one shared by a good portion of the league: spare lives, even if it compromised the efficiency of the job.

she still didn't understand it, but she supposes she doesn't have to.

The day when Kaida's the one making conversation must be the day the world ends, because she hates it way more than she thought she would. So much, that she suddenly snaps. "Say something if you want to...I hate talking this much. " By all intents and purposes, she should be glad she had the equivielent of a robot, but even if she hated everything about what she heard about this Iris, she still hated being the one talking the most, making the plans. Plans weren't her forte, she supported, she operated on instinct.

Speaking of instinct, Ormr was doing well, snapping at anything that came close. The Whirlpool kept too many enemies from approaching him, and in an instant, Hema joined in, springing from her perch with a Night Slash. The Mareanies seemed to be in a panic, a Whirlpool disrupting any attempts to move, two snake Pokemon biting and slashing any who managed to get near, and the most stubborn faced Slams and Headbutts from the Snivy and Silicobra on land. Already some cut their losses and disappeared from the battlefield, not even trying to press the issue. Kaida hoped they wouldn't be back.

And through it all, she glared expectingly at Iris. She wanted to dislike a person, not a robot. Didn't she have anything to say?

[attr="class","threadIris"]blue isn't the greatest at aiming, so she's grateful for the large hitbox the crowd of pokemon provide. he continues to work hard at assisting kaida's pokemon--iris, however, seems stuck on kaida's words.

"sorry," she mumbles, "i'm not very good at talking." it hadn't been an issue with her other missions, mostly because the rangers she was with were explaining everything along the way, leaving iris with little room to jump in (not that she minded, of course). she starts to wonder if this increasing freedom is a double-edged sword.

Kaida blinked as Iris stated her own difficulty with talking, sighing out after a few seconds, "Me too." It was a small admission, but one that she didn't mind speaking of. It wasn't like the ongoing battle was something to pay attention to. The Pokemon had it handled, and it seemed their targets weren't expecting a fight like this in the first place. [break][break]

Then a new question came out of thin air. Kaida stayed silent for a few seconds, not out of defensiveness, but because in the moment, she couldn't remember. "A...few years now, I think." She shrugged, "I didn't really pay attention to how long I've done things, just that I've been here a while." She supposed if Iris was asking the question, there must be a reason and, her own irritation winding down, asked back, "Why ask? Curious about something?"

[attr="class","threadIris"]iris can't help but notice how much more efficient kaida's pokemon are. the advantages of being a senior ranger, she supposed--her pokemon were far better trained. she'd only had blue for a few weeks. they attack with more force, recover more quickly (she recalls sitting in a rocket training room, the boy on his console next to her going on about 'frame advantage', or something along those lines).

for a moment, she wonders what the chances were of the league giving her a faulty pokemon. it would make sense, they wanted to restrain her, after all.

"everyone's seemed to have been here a while," she answers, "i didn't realise people enjoyed this job that much." she had only just started out, after all. iris hadn't even begun to think about how long exactly she'd be with the rangers.

For Kaida, she saw a young Pokemon in Iris's Mudkip. Still learning exactly what Iris wanted in it, and predictably, was clumsy, much like how a toddler didn't realize how it was supposed to walk yet. They'd improve, Pokemon didn't take long to understand everything, and Kaida thought it was easy for a human to improve next to a Pokemon. Hopefully, that was the case here. Kaida could only hope. Her words could do nothing. [break][break]

"Enjoy?" Surprise dripped from Kaida's lips, her eyes widening. Yes, she supposed she did enjoy this work but..."I didn't think about enjoyment, coming to this job...it's just, there was no way for me to do what I want any way else. Not a trainer, not a policewoman, nothing. None would let me focus on Pokemon like this, it was just the way I needed to go."
