[attr="class","threadIris"]she runs across the next bridge, turning one she reaches the platform to face river, waiting for him to catch up. iris was free of supervision today--a rare occasion, she didn't question whether it was trust or simply the rangers being understaffed. there were only a few hours of day left.

she thinks of her room, empty save the bare essentials. one of the rangers had said something about making it more a home, personalising it with trinkets and such, and asked if iris had any old photographs. it was a stupid question.

iris considers the boy for a moment. "wanna take a picture?"

River paces slowly behind Iris, hands shoved deep into his hoodie's pockets. One drawstring hangs longer than the other and flaps in the cool breeze. There's a melancholy look in the boys eye, like his focus is elsewhere. [break][break]

But in reality, he's just thinking about food. Maybe something to drink, too. It feels like they'd been walking for hours. Who's idea had this been, anyway? How did Iris keep bumping into him? [break][break]

Not that he minded.[break][break]

His belly growls and he opens his mouth to loudly proclaim his desire for food and bitch about how it's been x amount of time since he last ate when Iris catches his eye and asks him a question. The sun on her back makes her hair shine and he's suddenly tongue-tied.[break][break]

"Why?"[break][break]

But he stills comes to stand in front of her.[break][break]

[break][break]iris hadn't been able to live the life most other children had growing up--she was almost certain the case was the same for river--though she hadn't realised just how much she might have been missing out on until joining the league. she still wasn't sure how she felt about their softer treatment.

River brushes past her to lean on the rail of the bridge. The cool breeze tousles his hair, but he looks quite serene.[break][break]

His gaze follows hers for a moment as she stares off into space. She doesn't immediately answer, not that he minds. Iris has had a way of making him participate in activities he might otherwise never have done. This includes being sociable and making a day trip out of just exploring.[break][break]

"Never took you for the sentimental type, Iris."[break][break]

The boy looks her over, eyes narrowed a bit as he makes sense of what's going on with her. But he eventually feels a smile crawl across his face.[break][break]

"It is a nice day. C'mon, get in close. Can't take a good selfie if we aren't side by side."[break][break]

He reaches for her wrist then, if she complied, to pull her in closer. [break][break]

[attr="class","threadIris"]river's surprisingly compliant to the suggestion, iris smiles brightly. part of her had assumed he might have have a problem with it, with how he usually acted. it was out-of-character moments that always catch iris off guard.

iris tries to ignore the blush on her face as she's pulled in, focusing on getting her phone out her pocket. opening up the camera app, she holds it up, trying to find the best angle, before she suddenly finds her fingers grasping air. "hey!"

the pigeotto, phone in beak, settles on a nearby branch. it looks at iris, as if to say so what?

Perhaps, had it been anyone else but Iris, River would have declined - and not even politely. [break][break]

But also, perhaps not, because River was a vain and self-absorbed little beast that adored photos of himself. He was, after all, quite pretty, wasn't he?[break][break]

He's posing for her phone, prepared to give the poor girl rabbit ears behind her back at the last moment when her phone is suddenly snatched.[break][break]

Surprise is written on his face as the boy looks up and over Iris' head to see the Pidgeotto light down on a nearby branch. It grips the phone in its one talon roughly, and River instinctively snaps his fingers.[break][break]

The boy's Shinx appears seemingly out of nowhere, startled back to attention after having been engrossed in her own activities not so far away. The young kitten sprints to attention, skidding to a dramatic halt and bumping into Iris' shin clumsily.[break][break]

"Think you can be useful and get Iris' phone back, without frying it along with that stupid Pidgeotto?"

"blue, you help out too." the matter of their picture aside, she doubted the rangers would be happy if they found out they had to replace her phone--or would they even replace it? iris couldn't stand the thought of being caged in by the league even more than she was.

she reaches out with blue in her hands to help him onto the base of the branch. the mudkip slowly but surely edges closer to the location of the pigeotto. hopefully if he could scare it off, it'd fly within reach and give them enough time to take the phone back.

Shinx takes advantage of Iris' outstretched arm, bouncing onto her shoulders and fleeing up the length of her arm in pursuit of the Mudkip she had earlier assisted. She slips as she latches onto the nearby branch, her hind claws digging aggressively into the thin bark of the branch. It creaks as she gasps and holds on tight.[break][break]

River facepalms.[break][break]

In the process of her scrabble, the Pigeotto squawks aggressively and shifts her weight, but appears unaware of the Mudkip's advances. Instead, it slaps the phone against the branch it sits on and puffs its feathers. [break][break]

And then Shinx finally finds her footing and launches herself forward. She plows straight into the chest feathers of the wild bird Pokemon and they both bounce off the branches of the tree as they fall.[break][break]

"Oh my god."[break][break]

He facepalms, shaking his head sadly. Eventually, however, the boy stands up straight again and glances at Iris. He suddenly seems a little more awkward and nervous, his hand fumbling something in his pocket.[break][break]

"So.. anyway.. I uh.."[break][break]

River scratches the back of his head, mentally kicking himself for struggling so badly to try and find his words. [break][break]

"I got you something."[break][break]

From his hand appears a small pokeball that blows up in size when he presses it, and he offers it out to her.

[attr="class","threadIris"]"oh?" she takes the pokeball with some curiosity. examining it in her hand before pressing the button. a pink pokemon appears on the ground before her, letting out a small cry. "oh!" she says again, crouching down to examine the pokemon better. a smile stretches out over her face as she takes one of its paws into her hand.

"are you sure?" iris catches herself, looking up to river. the stufful, sensing that attention was no longer on it, smirks at her mudkip, taunting it. blue lets out an indignant cry, leaping from the branch and towards its provoker. iris catches the movement just in time.
[break][break]
"blue!" hastily, she scrambles for his pokeball. returning blue, she sends river an apologetic look.
[break][break]
among the scuffle, the pidgeotto had flown off, dropping iris' phone in the process. she picks it off from where it rests on the bridge planks. thankfully the screen hadn't cracked. "we can finally get that picture now." she laughs.

The moment she takes the ball from him he shoves his hands into his jacket pocket, hands balling into tense fists as he waits for her reaction. The boy sucks in a breath, warmth radiating from his cheeks (much to his dismay). As she opens the gift and the pink Stufful appears, River watches as Iris crouches down next to the teddy bear.[break][break]

And, in return, River glances away, unwilling to make eye-contact with the girl for fear he might say something stupid. But he would anyway because he was bad at words and bad with girls he kind of sort of liked, a little bit. Damn it.[break][break]

"Yeah, don't worry about it."[break][break]

He picks at the stitching of his pocket with nervous thumbs. His attention is quickly snagged by the indignant cry of Iris' Mudkip as he leaps out of the tree to attack the Stufful. Fortunately, Iris is faster, and the Pokemon is returned in a flash of light. River blinks in surprise.[break][break]

"Guess he's not a fan."[break][break]

River side-steps to let Iris move past him, hyper conscious of personal space while she retrieves the dropped phone. But then she reminds him about the photo they had planned on taking to begin with. His confidence evaporated during his gift delivery, he's at a loss for what to do with himself. Earlier he had been smooth and practiced, pulling her in close and letting his cocky grin put a smile on his face.[break][break]

Now, he was awkward and working hard to quell the blush in his cheeks as he gestures to the sunset behind them.[break][break]

"Right, right, the picture."
