[attr="class","athread"]Perhaps unsurprisingly, Annie had very little to say to Kyle. The moments before a battle were usually filled with introductions, cheery banter, overconfident promises and the like… But he’d be spared the small talk. Their meeting wasn’t a fun challenge with a trainer she’d been excited to test, it was an obligatory stepping stone to her next goal. If there were to be any niceties on the battlefield, it would be up to him to start them.

At least the silence meant she couldn’t voice her nerves, and focus on keeping them off her face. Confidence was her middle name, but considering how few trainers made it as far as she had… Even she knew that a win would be tough to pull off. Not that she’d ever admit it to him. All he got was a stare while she waited for him to declare the battle’s start.

the lights were dimmed and the only source of bright lights were from the corridor that annie came from. even with the limited light, the only thing one can discern in the room is the huge and standard arena and a room above it, with walls of glass for people to spectate from.

kyle sat at the first step of the stairs that led to the platform opposite the challenger's. his hands fiddled on a game console's buttons, and one can hear the battle music echo throughout the otherwise silent elite four chamber. he waits for a good moment to pause his game before standing up to greet the challenger.

"oh, good morni-" he stops himself as soon as he recognized the face, but he continues soon after a moment's pause. he snaps his fingers a few times before he gives up trying to remember her name. "shoe girl."

kyle walks towards the wall opposite the entrance, where an observer's deck overlooking the arena was. "so, any preferred battle formats? singles? doubles? 6v6?" the question lingers as he reappears back to the room behind the glass walls and over the terminals situated there. the light adjusts to a more proper level.

[attr="class","athread"]She opened her mouth. Paused. Closed it. That wasn’t the type of battle she’d come to fight. Instead, she let him wander off and breathe life into the room before he earned a response from her. “Doubles. Two each. If we make it quick, neither of us have to be here longer than we want to be, right?” She stepped up to bat, in what she assumed to be the challenger’s square, hands shoved into her tracksuit pockets.

too stiff, too serious. cannot even make her dislike towards him as subtle as possible. kyle sighs of contempt as he makes a judgement of character, wondering if the entire fight's going to be awkward.

a pc beside the console is booted up. he deposits his mons and withdraws two specific ones to fit the format. while he can make do with his current ones, he suppose he'll have to adhere to his challenger's requests.

"i send my mons, you send yours, i take first move. sounds good?"

kyle walks back down from the observatory deck and to the arena, two of the minimized pokeballs clinging in between his fingers. hunched as he walks briskly back to his position, he enlarges the capsules on his hand and releases a smeargle and a kommo-o on his side of the field as he passes by.

taking his position, he raises a brow and cocks his head, prompting annie to follow after.

[attr="class","athread"]Annie shrugged, biting back a comment. She spent a few more seconds in silence once his Pokemon were unleashed. A Kommo-o was a familiar sight - thanks to Django she knew at least some of what to expect there. The Smeargle was a wildcard, but if she had to guess, it would be the nuisance of the pair. Her hands shuffled around in her pockets until she found her preferred pair, summoning them onto the field.

Comfey and Emboar were her choices, the latter distinguished by a blue-black body and lilac flames. “I hope this can be fun, at least.” She didn’t sound hopeful. For what it was worth, her Pokemon’s presence had loosened her face a little. “Wildfire, Leia, let’s make this one to remember, alright?” Neither hesitated in nodding; they were facing forward, but Annie knew determination was plastered on their faces. Her spirit was more subdued, masked behind her obvious distaste for the man, but the fire was there nonetheless.

she picks out pokemon that directly counters his through type advantages, though that wasn't totally unexpected. he gave her this opportunity and it was a waste not to take advantage of it.

at least it'll end the battle fast one way or another.

"gordin, perish song. kommo-o, dragon dance."

the smeargle opens his mouth and starts to sing a song. the melody was oddly eerie and chilling for simply being a song as it affects everyone on the field. despite hearing it, the kommo-o remains sprightly on its feet, performing the dragon dance as he hypes himself up for the upcoming brawl it'll inevitably take part of.

while he doesn't know much about alolan pokemon, he at least is has an idea that an emboar would prefer to take the fight up close and personal. he lets his pokemon stay on his side of the field, opting for the other to approach them instead.

[attr="class","athread"]She knit her brow at his opening move for half a second – that was as long as it took her to remember Django’s old ability. The realization only narrowed her eyes further. When she’d mentioned a quick battle, that wasn’t exactly what she’d had in mind... But she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of hearing that.

“Leia, trail. Wildfire, Head Smash the Kommo-o.” One powerful push off the ground sent the Emboar rocketing forward. His body was overcome by a blue-white aura, transforming him into a bullet of energy rounded at his head. A Reckless charge, no doubt, but that was what Wildfire did best.

Well, that and cause a distraction. Once the pig had taken off, his partner followed suit. Her size allowed her to hide behind the beast, only to reveal herself once Annie continued: “Leia, Draining Kiss on the Kommo-o.” Before she’d finished speaking the words, she was already preparing up the attack. While Triage allowed her to act fast, the type advantage would make the attack fearsome… If she managed to plant a kiss on the dragon at all.

his kommo-o can take a hit, he supposed. while the option to play defensive was a better choice, kyle wants to at least savor the action left before the time limit he imposed under perish song ticks down to its last second.

"poison jab. teleport. time it right."

his smeargle runs towards his partner's side while the kommo-o remains in place. although he can attempt to dodge, the kommo-o instead positions himself for his attack, waiting for the comfey to come at him. his claws coat themselves with toxic as he pulls back his arm for a timed jab at the fairy-type.

the kiss connects. the dragon feels his energy drain from his body as it contacts with his fist. regardless, the punch doesn't stop and the momentum has already built up. poison jab attempts to throw the comfey to the emboar's reckless attack, all while the smeargle reaches the kommo-o, who has been released from their pokeballs beside each other.

as soon as the poison jab is thrown, the smeargle teleports both of them above, reappearing at the arena's ceiling.

[attr="class","athread"]The Kommo-o survived both attacks. It would be a surprise from anything other than the Elite Four, but she supposed they had to earn their name somehow. Likewise, Leia took a fierce punch to the face, though she was saved the pain of being launched into a second attack. Wildfire’s glow left him, and he raised his arms to catch the Comfey before he could add to her troubles. He may have been Reckless, but he wasn’t blind. His feet touched the ground where his enemies should have been, giving Kyle the briefest of glares before they heard commands.

A dragon blinking into existence above the stage was hard to miss. “Ceiling. Crown formation, Screened Storm.” @ken, for all his quirks, had taught her the value of putting her Pokemon together. The Comfey came to rest atop her attacker’s head, curling up to avoid his flaming beard. Wildfire reared his head back as he turned, bellowing as he released rolling clouds of Smog upwards. Leia followed up with a Petal Blizzard, releasing a tornado of razor petals into the arena. Only the Emboar’s position directly under its summoner protected it from the storm. The poison fog could hurt, but once again the Emboar’s move was a smokescreen first and an attack second.

kyle scratches his head when his pokemon teleport above. of all places to pop out, his pokemon chooses the most awkward spot to be in. sometimes, he swears his pokemon were all attention seekers.

crowned formation? screened storm? this isn't the first time he hears someone calls combination moves flashy names one can only hear from anime, though it still makes a mark in his head.

"gordin, your move!" he shouts, too lazy to choose an option between his three defensive moves in a moment's notice.

the flurry swallows them. petal blizzard melds well with the smog, constituting a makeshift inferno of poison. the combination of attacks hide what happens inside. kyle gets the storm part of the move, but the reasoning behind the screened still hasn't occurred to him.

once the attack dissipates, both of the smeargle and the kommo-o disappear from plain sight.

[attr="class","athread"]Gone. Not hiding above the arena or behind their trainer, just gone. The disappearance gave a much-needed moment to breathe, but with the timer counting down it was the last thing she wanted. Where the hell were they? Had the attacks hit? Apparently not, but why? Had the dragon really withstood a quadruple-effective attack… and then some?

The heat of battle had started to show on the girl’s face. She loathed to let the man think that he was troubling her, but… he was. Much, much more than she’d prefer to show. Annoying and expected, but she hadn’t come that far to give up just because one battle looked tough. “Leia, eyes up. Turn around and keep it going.” They’d go for the weakened healer, no doubt, and she had little defence against an enemy they couldn’t see. The Petal Blizzard would have to do, ensuring that wherever they struck from, something would hit. A brief pause between attacks gave the crown a chance to turn a half-circle atop her mount.

“Wildfire, arm at the ready.” His move, for once, had no visible effect. The Emboar spread his feet, prepared for the next strike. When the attackers came, he’d greet whichever was in front with a Sucker Punch… Once he knew where they were coming from. Still, the attack came with speed ill-befitting of his size and stature, and with them both watching each other’s backs, there were only so many angles to hide in.
