[attr="class","athread"] “For-treeeeeeee!” Annie’s arrival was announced by several sounds. First, her yell. Milliseconds later, the bang of a pair of doors swinging against walls, flung open by her arms. Next, the distant flustered flapping of many a winged beast, jolted out of their rest. Judging by the grin on her face, she held no remorse – if anything, their surprise only helped draw attention to her.

“I’m here for a battle, and then a badge! Don’t hold back now, alright?” Her words carried through the room as her feet took her further in, eyes searching for the leader, an assistant, whoever would bring her closer to another victory. Her potential fifth badge was, in her mind, a very different challenge to her usual fare. On one hand, all she had to lose was a little pride if the battle turned sour; she still had enough to walk the champion’s road. On the other hand, those same badges likely carried weight amongst the region’s top trainers. She doubted she’d have to tell the man not to hold back, if he’d been lucky enough to hear about her.

But it was fine if he hadn’t. She’d only be a little offended.

It was one of the rare times when he wasn’t online—he was pretty sure that Florian was busy elsewhere. However, the two had agreed to meet later in-game, after they’d done all the things they needed to accomplish for the day.[break][break]

Which was all fine and dandy considering he was waiting for a challenger to come by right this moment! The silence at the front desk of the Sanctuary was then shattered by the arrival of what the receptionist guessed was the challenger today.[break][break]

Shoving his brown hair out of his face, he looked up from the pile of papers he was notating. “Oh, Miss Annie? Give me like five minutes,” and with that he pressed on the earpiece, muttering something into the microphone. Eventually, the door on the side opened—but instead of the Gym Leader, it was a rather naughty-looking blue blob that had spotted the new arrival that had disturbed the peace.[break][break]

Letting out a mischievous noise, the Phione then charged right at the young girl, attempting to squish her in a face-hugging gesture! Some moments later, a rather harried-looking man would follow, looking around frantically.[break][break]

“Oh, come on, Zelle!” Alexei let out with an exasperated noise. “Stop trying to face-hug everyone who comes in here!” he called out, approaching the blob and plucking her before she could do too much damage to their guest’s face.[break][break]

“Well, hello there,” he began, quickly bapping the Phione with a Dive Ball, the better to keep her under control. “Sorry about that, she’s just a mess and a half. You came for a gym battle, right? Follow me outside, please,” and off he went, through the same side entrance and towards the outdoor arena.

[attr="class","athread"]The doors opened and caught her eye, but what sped out was far from a gym leader. In fact, she didn’t know what it was – an increasing rarity for her -, other than it was approaching her. Fast. “Wait-wait-waitwhatsto-“ Furiously waving arms did nothing to stop the attack.

Fortunately, it was only the second time that week that Annie had had a Pokemon on her face (raising a lot of small, affectionate Pokemon had interesting side effects). Flailing arms stopped short of striking the stranger or his creature, and her muffled cries turned into a deep breath as ‘Zelle’ was plucked free.

“I’m okay. I’m fine,” she said, albeit through ragged breaths. A hand rested on her heart, she let out a gentle sigh, and then all was right as rain. “First of all, I feel tricked! That wasn’t a flying Pokemon at all! Didn’t even have wings! Secondly, what was that? Thirdly… Er…” She knitted her brow. “I can’t think of a third right now, so let’s go fight! No more suffocation without my permission, please!”

For whatever reason, she’d come seemingly fully equipped. A tracksuit was par for the course with Annie, but she’d come along with a hiking backpack too, stuffed with… something or other. Not that it slowed her down any as she followed the man. What surprises did his gym hold for her?

Thank the hell he was able to stop her before she had done any more permanent damage to whoever had come by. Maybe it was luck that Zelle didn’t meet Ruby, otherwise… interesting things would have happened.[break][break]

Once he had dropped the occupied Dive Ball back into the inner pocket of his jacket, he led the way to the outdoor arena—literally open to the sky above. The weather was a nice, balmy sort of mid-spring, nothing too windy or too crazy. There were few clouds dotting across the sky, and while the sun wasn’t out, the wind was rather nippy.[break][break]

“I rather like having the arena outside. I mean, who wouldn’t say no to all the fresh air?!” he enthused, before reaching for something around his neck and pulling out a thin whistle. Blowing exactly one note, the shadows of various Flying-types began to fly overhead, congregating before the outdoor perches that were scattered here and there, alighting to rest their wings.[break][break]

“So, is it a singles-type match you came here for?” he inquired, although if he was to hazard a guess that may not be the case.

[attr="class","athread"]The rumours were true. An outdoor arena, with a special emphasis on fresh air. There’s the slightest of frowns on Annie’s face while his back is turned. She’d realised he likely wouldn’t be happy with her choice of Pokemon. Neither would the avians that made up their audience, if all went to plan.

Oh well. Nobody could accuse her of putting on a boring show, at least.

“Heh, yeah, right…” Uneasy answers stopped short of giving strong agreement, and instead she focused on the reason she was there. “Actually… If it’s all the same to you, I’m really trying to make a name for myself as a double battler! Partnering Pokemon is the key to unlocking new strengths from both of them, y’see. I bet you’ve got two guys that go really well together, so now’d be a great time to put that to the test!” Besides, he totally owed her for letting his Pokemon rob her of oxygen.

His eyebrows went up slightly at the mention of double battles. He dealt mostly with single battles, but as the young woman explained to him, she was looking to get her footing as a double-battles specialist.[break][break]

“I’d want to see what you have in mind,” he began as he effectively hid his surprise. Most of—actually, his entire army did pretty well in single battles, but seeing as this was going to be double battles, he knew that he had to be careful. Of course, he already had a pair in mind, but he wanted to see what his challenger was going to be up to.[break][break]

“Call your two Pokémon forward, and I’ll reveal mine afterward,” he continued, watching and waiting. He was literally flying into unchartered territory here, so this was going to be an experiment and a half.[break][break]

Hmm… I wonder what she’s up to, he thought to himself as he waited for the challenger to call forth her two Pokémon on her side of the field.

[attr="class","athread"]She chose the terms, but she had to reveal her Pokemon first. A fair compromise. If her smile didn’t voice her thoughts, a nod and some words would do the trick shortly after. A pair of Pokeballs were withdrawn, and a slight raise of her brow warned the gym leader to step away.

A Gliscor was sent onto the field first. He was right at home amongst his fellow flying-types, though a fixed menacing grin from him didn’t seem to show love for them. Standing at a metre tall, his presence was dwarfed by his partner Pokemon. The Tyranitar was over twice his height, a dirtier shade of green than his kin, and was barely containing his Sand Stream. It swirled around him, as if he were the centre of its spiral galaxy, but once the battle began all bets were off. As always, Goliath announced his arrival with a roar and a stomp that introduced tremors to the arena.

“He’s excited. So am I.”

Sighting a Gliscor and a Tyranitar taking the opposite end of the field, he knew that this was going to be a war of weather—the Sandstorm was already howling the moment the Tyranitar stepped out onto the field.[break][break]

“Nice choice,” he said with a grin on his face, before blowing another note on his whistle. One of the shadows from earlier flew overhead, before landing close to him—it was his Pidgeot, Idun. The other one, he had to summon from a Dive Ball he kept close to him at all times, because holy shit when she lost her temper it was a mess and a half to clean up after her![break][break]

A flash of red light revealed his Gyarados, who then let out a bellowing roar at the sight of the Tyranitar.[break][break]

“Calm down!” he called over the roaring grit at the dual-type, before internally rolling his eyes. Calling over to the other side of the field, he then nodded.[break][break]

“Shall we begin?!”

[attr="class","athread"]Two advantages lost before the battle had begun. She’d given up her opportunity to choose the best Pokemon to face his, and in turn, he’d chosen counters to her Campers. That Gyarados was going to be a pain, but- ‘That's fine’, she reminded herself, ‘and good practice'. If she couldn’t win without a handicap, then she didn’t deserve to win anyway. Besides, the choices could have been worse. Her Songbird’s Cloud Nine would have put an annoying end to her fun, as would a Pelipper with Drizzle. Maybe he didn’t have them, or maybe he was sparing her the frustration.

She’d figure out which of the two he preferred in short order. The Pidgeot could still attempt to blow away the sands, and if the Gyarados had Rain Dance… Well, she’d cross that bridge when she got to it.

“This’ll be a toughie, but we’ve got this! Goliath, Vamp, start the match!”

Undeterred by a fellow roaring beast, the Tyranitar released his ability. Harsh winds picked up the sands surrounding his body, embracing the arena in a storm rarely seen outside of Hoenn’s desert. Annie’s Pokemon would weather it without a problem thanks to their types, but the same likely couldn’t be said for the enemy.

“Vamp, get moving!” She’d chosen the two for a reason, which revealed itself once the Gliscor leapt up, spread his wings and dived into the sandstorm. No doubt, the master of avians knew that their kind were gliders, not fliers, relying on the wind to carry them around without a sound. Winds that Goliath had provided to carry the sand around the field. Hearing wouldn’t help them find the scorpion, and the sands made keeping an eye on him difficult. Sand Veil had revealed itself, making their battle a little more difficult.

“Screech on the Pidgeot!” Vamp let the winds carry him to the other end of the field, landing parallel to his enemies. An ear-splitting cry announced his presence to the pair - especially the bird, who he hoped to catch off guard. “Goliath, Rock Slide!” In the absence of a mountain to break apart, the titan raised his arms and created jagged orbs above himself. A flurry of them would fly to rain down upon his enemies.

The moment the sand started picking up, he knew he was going to be in an uphill battle.[break][break]

Well, well, she did come prepared… but of course… let’s see how this should go… he thought, catching a momentary glimpse of the Gliscor before it vanished in the howling grit. Now, how was he going to…[break][break]

Remembering the strategy he had discovered with his battle with Ruby, one way to catch a Pokémon was to follow its sound. “Careful out there, Idun! Feather Dance on the Tyranitar, and Hera… Hera!” he yelled over the grit. Hopefully the Gyarados was going to listen this time.[break][break]

“Hera! Cut a path through the sand, Hydro Pump around the area!”[break][break]

Hopefully this would make the swirling sand a little more… bearable to get through. Rearing back, the Gyarados then flashed its Intimidating moue at the two opponents on the other side of the field, before taking a deep breath and blasting out a powerful blasé of water, moving her head from side to side in a spreading, fanned-out direction.[break][break]

At the same time the Gyarados had blasted the torrential downpour of water, the Pidgeot veered around the sand storm, getting hit by some of the rocks before unleashing a massive blast of feathery down on the Tyranitar in an attempt to reduce the attacking power of the big threat.[break][break]

For now, the Gyaradoes begins to rain down hell with Hydro Pump on the opposite side of the field, and the Pidgeot attempts to use Feather Dance on the Tyranitar![break][break]

Both Gyarados and Pidgeot take damage from the sandstorm, Pidgeot takes some damage from the Rock Slide.

[attr="class","athread"]It was no surprise that Goliath saw the worst of the attacks. Even when his battle partner could be seen, his kind’s reputation, his size and a dominating presence made him an obvious focus. Still, being peppered with attack minimizers was going to get troublesome fast- all the more reason for her to push the offensive.

Then there was the Hydro Pump, dousing the sands until they were too heavy to whip around the arena. It wouldn’t last, of course – not while the source of the storm stood and continued to channel it -, but the fliers had bought themselves a few precious moments without the weather… And more annoyingly, robbed Vamp of his hiding place. The disapproval showed on the challenger's face.

She had to think fast. Their eyes were ahead, and she much preferred to keep them there. And so it was with a deep breath that she commanded their first gamble. “Goliath, show them you’re not ahead! Ice Fang the Pidgeot!” A Tyranitar didn’t need to be told to charge without fear, of course. The beast let out another roar as he ran to the enemies’ side. His maw opened wide to reveal teeth extended by icicles, ready to wedge a chunk of the bird in-between them.

Whether or not they succeeded in doing so didn’t matter as much as what came once he was halfway across the field, for he was but a distraction. “Vamp, fry that Gyarados!” The Pidgeot had moved forward to perform its dance, leaving a clear path between the Gliscor and his soon-to-be victim. He sprung off the ground and fell into a brief glide, hoping to land atop the pseudo-dragon… and sink cackling canines into him. She’d been hoping to wait until the Sandstorm had whittled more of their health away, but with the threat of being danced into ineffectiveness, Thunder Fang made an early appearance.

Alright, so one part of the plan worked—that was good.[break][break]

As the grit cleared out somewhat, the attackers were revealed. While not clearly seen as day, he knew that they were coming, and so it was his turn to attempt to turn the weather against the original caster. Knowing that he had little time, he looked at his Pidgeot, relieved to see that the gritty mess had cleared up somewhat…[break][break]

“Go up, Idun!” he called out to the airborne Pokémon, who wasted no time to try and get out of range as much as possible. He was going to have to get one of them hit for this to work, somehow… somehow…[break][break]

Closer… closer… now! He thought, as the Gyarados bellowed in pain the moment the Thunder Fang connected. Hoping that she was alright, he knew that he could focus her rage on the incoming threat.[break][break]

“Hera! Hydro Pump, point-blank!” he continued, watching as the now-extremely angry Gyarados let out a roar, before summoning up a cannon-blast force of powerful water, attempting to spray down the Tyranitar. The Pidgeot was still in the air, however… that strategy would have to wait. But would it work?[break][break]

He knew the chances of the damned attack hitting would be almost nil since it wasn’t raining, but he decided to try a different tack instead. “Feather Dance! Not on the Tyranitar, on the Gliscor!”[break][break]

Another massive shower of feathery down came billowing from the Pidgeot’s way, flying above most of the battlefield—as the white, soft mass came spiraling down in an attempt to latch onto the Gliscor this time.[break][break]

Next turn. Next turn… hold it together! He thought, hoping that he would be able to catch them by surprise.[break][break]

Pidgeot flies up to escape the incoming Ice Fang! Gyarados tanks the Thunder Fang, getting even angrier in the process. Takes this opportunity to attempt a point-blank Hydro Pump attack on the Tyranitar![break][break]

Pidgeot then attempts to use Feather Dance on the Gliscor![break][break]

Both Gyarados and Pidgeot take damage from the sandstorm.
