It had to be boredom that encouraged Emma to crawl out from under the rock she had learned how to live under. Boredom and some sort of itch to test her skills. Maybe it was thanks to that stupid video game that marcel maeda had bought for her that encouraged her to venture back out into the real world and actually learn a little bit about battling. [break][break]

Emma Wolfe had never been the type to indulge in the frivolity of battling - the trainers she had seen used it to showcase their strengths via their Pokemon. But they weren't actually strong, not in the physical sense, or at least not all of them. [break][break]

Miss Cait Alfric's intricate maze had been a cake-walk for the mercenary. Mazes, puzzles, planning, thinking - that was what she was good at. [break][break]

The woman's hand brushes the greenery as she makes it out of the entrance, thumb and forefinger gently crushing a heavy leaf. She glances up, likely expecting to see the young gym leader standing there waiting for her. [break][break]

"The maze is an interesting challenge, I can appreciate that."

traditionally she'd greet challengers - especially those whom appeared relatively fresh-faced - with a smile and a greeting laced with the usual amount of warmth. but the woman appeared to be far too distracted to manage, the expression she wore betraying her worry. and her verdant gaze was not turned toward emma; but toward a white-maned and yellow-furred pokemon.

miss alfric appeared to be in the midst of conversation, her tone sharp and her voice slightly raised as she addressed a hypno.

"what do you mean she's - "

hypno's pinprick gaze swiveled toward wolfe, her large hand raised in warning as she silently bid her mistress to be silent. the young woman complied, a look of annoyance passing over her features before they settled to one of neutrality.

"hello," she greeted, her tone unusually stilted. "you're here for a... badge, i assume?"

Emma's greeting falls to empty air as she overhears the hushed murmurs between the gym leader and her Hypno. She can read the room, at this point it's become second nature. But to turn around now, to admit some sort of guilt or discomfort would be a mistake, a tell.[break][break]

And she was too proud and too strong to turn away from a blatant challenge. [break][break]

"She's challenging the gym? Yes, I am."[break][break]

Her words are flat as she fills in her own blank - knowing full well that that wasn't the topic of this hushed conversation.[break][break]

In fact, Emma's eyes are just as sharp as the Hypno's as she stares the creature down, begging it to start something, to say what's on its mind.[break][break]

But when Cait turns to address her, her voice stilted and her skin practically crawling with unease, Emma breathes in and straightens her posture, turning her stoney gaze back to the woman.[break][break]

"Indeed. My... apologies, if I interrupted something important."

cait opened her mouth and then closed it before shooting her hypno a sharp glance.

"we'll discuss this later," she said. "you have a meeting to attend to in my stead - if i recall."

the psychic-type dipped her head, her gaze remaining fixed upon emma as she did so. she made her exit, her pace unhurried as she crossed the slim wooden bridge that crossed the field's bordering river.

"it's nothing of importance," cait fibbed, giving a nonchalant wave of her hand as she did so. "let's get this battle underway."

she explained the rules in a prompt manner, revealing that their battle was to be a cut and dry one on one. cait produced a pokeball that was formerly secured at her waist, a tangrowth soon emerging from its contents.

"you're welcome to start."

She had come to Mauville with a handful of Pokemon, but there was only one that she really had any intention of using. Hades was beneath petty squabbles like this, but she knew he could handle it. They were both bored and could use a little change in their daily routine.[break][break]

Emma avoids direct eye contact with the woman while she speaks to her Hypno - it's none of her business after all. Even if the business was likely related to herself. She could see it in the way the Pokemon stared at her, the mutual distrust between individuals.[break][break]

The woman's eyes narrow only slightly as the Hypno makes her exit, and she glances back at Cait. When she indicates that the battle be underway and explains the procedure of the battle, Emma dips her head politely in acceptance.[break][break]

Cait releases some sort of tangled abomination and Emma releases her Lycanroc. The werewolf seems to almost smile, baring teeth only slightly as black lips pull up over his gums.[break][break]

"Hades?"[break][break]

She speaks as if she's asking the beast a question, but he responds with a snarl TAUNTING the Tangrowth to attack. Should it work, he would lunge forward to get closer, acting without hesitation. It would be quite fun to pull those growths apart.

her tangrowth released a low gurgling noise at the sight of the stone hound, the sound produced meant to be one of greeting. it was difficult to discern the temperament of the grass-type, though her eyes betrayed a warmth that spoke of friendliness. the taunt caused her to instantly sober, her gaze hardening dramatically as she raised her arms in challenge.

"power whip, tangrowth."

two of the many vines which covered the outer layer of her body began to lengthen, enveloped by a radiant and verdant glow once called. they extended within the span of seconds, rushing toward the canine in an attempt to sweep and lash out harshly against the rock-type.

The Lycanroc is momentarily taken aback by the warmth he detects from his opponent. This Pokemon doesn't carry the same weight of anger or hate that he does. It watches him with thoughtful expression, her gaze only hardening when he TAUNTS her. The Tangrowth rises to the challenge and Hades growls.[break][break]

Emma has detected this disconnected bridge between them as well. Cait's demeanor and approach and the kindness of her Pokemon is suffocating. Like a SWEET SCENT was placed permanently in the area and it allowed kindness and love to flourish.[break][break]

Two vines extend from the Tangrowth's compactly knotted body, lashing out to POWER WHIP Hades. The Lycanroc snarls, bracing himself with his forearms as the super effective attack lashes at him. It hurts but he doesn't dare express it, instead choosing to bare his teeth and push through the pain.[break][break]

And then, once the vines relent just a moment, he lunges. His mouth opens and razor sharp teeth expose themself as he closes the distance to CRUNCH down on the Tangrowth's confusing frame.

the grass-type released a muted roar, the noise laced with the very pain that presently shot through her weighty tendrils. cait winced, aware that a form of nervous system coursed throughout every single one of its vines that draped over her form. so many - and perhaps, too many - were unaware that plants were intricate in a multitude of ways.

she was half-tempted to verbally comfort her pokemon, but was all-too aware that time was wasted on uttering such words.

"slam, tangrowth."

both she and her tangrowth counterpart took advantage of the lycanroc's proximity. they sought to wield the numerous tendrils to lash out mercilessly against their foe. the grass-type aimed for the canine's narrow skull, taunt having driven her to execute such a brutal action.

As the Lycanroc finds purchase, he doesn't let go.[break][break]

Teeth sink as deep as they'll go, saliva dripping down his chin as his tongue writhes in his mouth. The Tangrowth fights him, recoiling from the bite. Just as his teeth let go and the Pokemon's screams indicate its next attack, Lycanroc's eyes glow with a hunger.[break][break]

Hades stands poised, prepared to lurch forward again in another assault. The gym leader commands something from her Pokemon but Emma picks up on it.[break][break]

"Deflect."[break][break]

Like a perfectly performed parry, the Lycanroc conjures a PROTECT. The barrier shatters at the impact of the SLAM but it does its job. Virtually unscathed and pushed back a bit from the impact, Lycanroc waits.

tangrowth released a gurgle of confusion the moment her arm bounced usually off a reflective surface, her eyes rounding as her prey slipped out of her reach. a noise of irritation soon followed, those round eyes narrowing a fraction upon the dog. cait's gaze sharpened as well, the woman gauging the hound's mobility.

'i haven't used my lycanroc in an age,' she thought. 'so pinpointing this one's weakness is going to be... difficult.'

did she have enough time to properly craft a successful stratagem?

'we'll see.'

still under the effect of the taunt, the tangrowth trembled with an uncharacteristic fury; the pokemon struggling to remain largely immobile as she glared at the rock-type.

"ancient power."

the stones manifested themselves in great number, each varying in side as the grass-type eagerly launched the barrage of rocks at the agile canine.

Hades bides his time, it seems, waiting for the opportunity to strike. He watches the Tangrowth's bewilderment turn back into an enraged taunt as it raises its tentacles in a display of aggression. And then it begins to rain shards of sharp stones.[break][break]

So the Lycanroc adds to it with a sharpened barrage of STONE EDGE from the bush of his mane. He races through the ANCIENT POWER, growling as every piece glances off his body and slows him down only a bit at a time. The stones swirl around him but he focuses on not being distracted, on tearing down the Tangrowth's defenses with his own attack.[break][break]

Emma tilts her head as she watches the battle ensue, watches the scratches widen on her Pokemon's forearms as he takes the brunt of the damage without flinching. He's fearless, pushing himself through the pain in order to come out on top. [break][break]

It merely encouraged her to consider raising more Rockruff pups and see how they would fill out in comparison. She was fairly certain the midnight form was only one of a few, after all.

the attacks of stone clash and hound's barrage soon batter the tangrowth's bulky form. a gurgling noise escaped her, one that betrayed her pain and confusion as her mind began to gradually clear. the haze of fury lessened significantly, the grass-type blinking rapidly as she regained her good senses. the large female stopped trembling as the rage tapered off, her gaze softening as she focused upon her foe.

she almost appeared apologetic, a soft and low noise escaping her as she produced an apology in their respective tongue.

'it looks like the effect of taunt has faded,' cait thought, relieved.

"ingrain."

her command was followed without a moment's hesitation, her eyes falling shut as she focused on mending her own injuries.

Emma watches as the TAUNT-induced rage subsides in the Tangrowth's eyes. The Pokemon loses its fury in exchange for a soft, well-mannered gaze. It almost seems to apologize for its earlier aggression. What a sign of weakness.[break][break]

Hades salivates aggressively as he, too, witnesses the Pokemon's sudden change of attitude. The beast waits, however, still anticipating another attack he'd have to deflect. It doesn't come because he watches as the Tangrowth's limbs sink into the ground. The Pokemon's wounds are visibly healing, some sort of unseen power rising from the ground.[break][break]

"Don't give it an inch, Hades."[break][break]

The order encourages the Lycanroc to inhale deeply, eyes glowing even brighter as he uses his ODOR SLEUTH to help pinpoint the exact location of the Tangrowth's INGRAINED vines. Without hesitating, Hades begins to assault the ground with more STONE EDGES, rupturing the ground in his attempt to sever.

tendrils that had manifested to sink into stone allowed her pokemon some modicum of relief. she had to reach only past the first layer of rock, moist soil contained beneath hardened floor. unfortunately her respite was brief - terribly brief - the clever tactic by the opposing pair causing a majority of her vines to snap.

a confused gurgle escaped the grass-type, her round eyes further exposing her bemusement.

"sleeping powder!"

before her ingrain was rendered completely and utterly ineffective, cait clung onto the hope that reapplication wouldn't be necessary if she simply stopped the canine in their tracks. a flurry of powder flew toward the enemy, thick and potent and threatening to either lull the canine to sleep or render him drowsy.
