Sunlight struggles to filter through drawn curtains; in the shadow of Gavin's living room, the man's excitement is almost tangible.[break][break]

A Porygon rests on the coffee table, immobile.[break][break]

"My — sister has been helping me parse through the data hidden on this thing." Though he hesitates briefly on the admission, Gavin presses forward after a breath. Somehow, it does not make him uncomfortable when it's Emma who knows. "Most of it's corrupted, the tech they used to create these things is apparently really outdated, but..."[break][break]

On his laptop, Gavin pulls up a couple of files that his sister had shared with him. He understood some basic programming due to her influence, but most of the code looked like gibberish to him. He's been told it's encrypted, and that most of it is irretrievable. Most. A few lines had been helpfully highlighted by Saoirse. Most importantly, a name.[break][break]

"He works for the League," Gavin explains. "This Porygon must've been his."[break][break]

He pauses, certain Emma will catch on.

From the kitchen, Emma busies herself preparing coffee. Gavin's excitement over a bizarre Pokemon is of little interest to the woman only because of her lack of understanding surrounding it. But her partner's clear intensity was enough to pull her in.[break][break]

She sets down a steaming mug, prepared the way he liked it. The woman nudges it closer before finding a seat on the edge of the coffee table, glancing down at the Porygon on the other side. She crosses her leg over the other and sips at her own mug, expression bored.[break][break]

Gavin rambles on and on about how the data is mostly corrupted and she rapidly loses interest. She had no use for corrupted files if she couldn't decipher them. However, the man scrolls through something on his laptop and she sets her mug down to shift closer to him and the screen to see better.[break][break]

All of a sudden her expression changes from bored and uninterested to intrigued.[break][break]

Her eyes skirt the code. She'd never really been overly experienced in the coding department, but the name catches her attention. She narrows her eyes, clearly lost in thought.[break][break]

"I know that name, Gavin."[break][break]

She grins.

Emma is bored; she makes no effort to hide it, but Gavin doesn't care. It is rare that he gets this wired over something unrelated to his research, and she is the only person he trusts enough to divulge the information to.[break][break]

Unfortunate, for her.[break][break]

She does, however, perk up when the name is mentioned. A thrill runs through him as she grins, and he picks up his mug and downs the coffee scalding, just as his grandfather would drink his tea. It burns a path down his throat and warms him from the inside, joins the excited fluttering in his stomach. If Emma knew the name...[break][break]

"Then he's a prime target." From what he knew of her, she would not bother to recall the identity of someone inconsequential. "Saoirse was only able to decrypt partial data fragments, but apparently it points to certain activities not sanctioned by the League. Can you confirm any of that?"

The woman perches on the edge of his chair, quickly growing antsy as excitement thrums through her own veins. She abandons her own drink, setting it aside. It sloshes a bit with the force and she gets to her feet, moving back and forth around the room. She's organizing her thoughts, fighting to recall where she's heard his name before.[break][break]

And then he mentioned 'activities not sanctioned by the League' and she snaps her fingers, pointing at Gavin. Her eyes are wide and she gasps, losing control of her hands as she tries to explain herself.[break][break]

"Yes! Yes, yes. Yes."[break][break]

She's like a kid in a candy store, overwhelmed with excitement. [break][break]

"He's been involved in several illegal fighting rings. He never gets caught because he's cunning, he organizes them in a way that it isn't technically illegal but I've been waiting for him to slip up. This could be it, Gavin. This could be how we crush him."

Her energy, her excitement, it catches him off guard — but not in a bad way. Quiet amusement smolders in his gaze as he watches her pace, not even commenting on the fact that some of her coffee has sloshed over the lip of the mug and onto the table.[break][break]

A grin spreads slow across his features as she explains.[break][break]

"Cocky bastard probably didn't ever expect to lose this, now did he?"[break][break]

Gavin's fingers dance across the keyboard as he fires off a few messages to his sister, taking another strong swig of his coffee as he awaits her response. She is, as ever, quick and reliable. Soft dings sound as she replies.[break][break]

"Ah, perfect — perfect, she's got us a potential address for one of the rings." Apparently, it had seemed irrelevant until further information about what illegal dealings he was involved in came to light. Neat, precise handwriting spells out the location. He wouldn't risk saving this kind of document to his phone or computer. Paper could be easily destroyed. "Mauville Hills."[break][break]

He does not bother to thank his sister. She has already cut contact, removing all trace of the conversation. When she wants to be, Saoirse is a ghost.[break][break]

Gavin is on his feet, the Porygon disappearing into its ball.[break][break]

"We're gonna get him, Emma." His grin is feral in its intensity. "Ready for a stakeout?"

Emma eagerly leans over his shoulder as he types, hair falling over her shoulder and across his own. Her eyes scan the messages fervently, a renewed sense of intrigue causing her fingers to squeeze the back of his chair. He sips his coffee aggressively despite its heat and she doesn't comment - shes distracted.[break][break]

He writes down an address and she seems to lock it away in her mind. She almost certainly wouldn't need to see it again in person, his neat handwriting was locked in her memory. [break][break]

When he stands, she backs away from him to give him space. The Porygon is neatly returned to its pokeball and she appears antsy, itching to get a move on.[break][break]

"She said he'd be there at a certain time, right? I saw something about a discreet invitation - 1 am."[break][break]

Her eyes glance over her shoulder rapidly to check the clock in the kitchen. It reads around suppertime, an odd time to enjoy a coffee but the two of them aren't cookie-cutter perfect. She sighs, however, clearly disappointed. [break][break]

"Too ready, we're still several hours out."[break][break]

Emma inhales deeply, forces herself to relax her tense shoulders. She's full of pent up anticipation - it's clear that this name has been on her list for a very long time. It was literally driving her mad to wait any longer.

Emma's close enough that her hair tickles his shoulder, filling his nose with the pleasant scent of her shampoo and momentarily distracting him from all coherent thought. He recovers quickly, continuously surprised by how comfortable their interactions have come to feel. Minute hesitation marks in his handwriting could easily be interpreted as pauses to check spelling.[break][break]

As he rises from his chair, he's very conscious of the way she exits his space.[break][break]

Impatience colours her every action, movement, the very words she speaks — Gavin is slow in comparison, methodical, the barest hint of a smile tugging at his lips as she expresses her frustrations.[break][break]

He touches her shoulder as he brushes past her, a subconscious and instinctive action.[break][break]

"We can leave immediately," he says as he retrieves his pokeball belt and loops it around his waist. "This gives us plenty of time to scope the place out in case the situation changes."[break][break]

He shrugs on a windbreaker in anticipation of a long flight.[break][break]

"What else do you know about this guy? You think he'll try and fight, or flee?"

Her pacing ceases the moment his hand touches her shoulder and she responds the only way she knows - to pull away just as he moves on. She lifts her hand to her shoulder subconsciously, a distracted look in her eye as she nods along with his instruction. Leaving immediately was a good idea, a great idea.[break][break]

While he retrieves a belt and windbreaker, Emma grabs her lengthy trenchcoat, slipping it over her shoulders easily. It fits snug, a perfect fit. The collar brushes the edge of her jaw and she glances over her shoulder, as if searching for something. Finding nothing, the woman glances back to Gavin as he poses her a question.[break][break]

"He's a coward. Somehow, despite my best efforts, he's always managed to slip through my fingers. We need to be cautious, we need to be perfect. He spooks at the drop of a pin - he does not want to be caught."[break][break]

Her fingers smooth over the button fastening on her coat, idly tapping them. It could be seen as anxiety but she is anything but.[break][break]

"But the men he has shadow him are dangerous. They don't work for the League, so they have no qualms about their.. methods."[break][break]

The woman's expressions just slightly, as if perhaps she had been victim to their methods at some point.[break][break]

Without waiting another second, the woman brushes past Gavin and out the door. The air is humid and warm, but it would surely grow colder as soon as they took flight. The woman searches the sky for her Noivern but sees no sight of the beast - it must be busy elsewhere.

That Emma pulls away as he brushes past is not noticed by Gavin, for the touch had not been something he consciously registered. More and more, such little things crept their way past his usual defenses.[break][break]

His lips purse at her description of their target. Cowardice makes their job safer, but much harder. He would rather incur the risk of the man attempting to fight back than losing him in the chaos of a city such as Mauville. If he slipped away, based on Emma's experience, they wouldn't find him again.[break][break]

"Then we won't drop any pins."[break][break]

A smirk curls at the edge of his lip. When Emma mentions the methods of their quarry's accomplices, however, the expression sours into something cold, dangerous. It's subtle, but he can interpret the minute shifts in her increasing familiar expressions to mean that she has first-hand experience. His determination solidifies. They would not get the chance to hurt her again.[break][break]

She has already ghosted past him to the door, and Gavin follows into the choking humidity. Her eyes are on the sky, and his own trace the clouds overhead. She never seems to use a pokeball for her wyvern mount.[break][break]

"Do you have another flier?"[break][break]

His own pokeball reveals his familiar silvered Corviknight, the metallic avian's feathers rustling with a grating sound as it's released.

Emma's gaze shifts to him for a moment at his comment, his promise. She mirrors his smirk easily, her eyes almost glowing with intensity as she feels some sort of pre-firing adrenaline rush through her veins. The thrill of the hunt had begun.[break][break]

She does not, however, notice the growl on his face. His expression soon changes into something she's never seen before, but her eyes are on the sky and not on him. So whatever sense of malice he expresses is lost in the dark. [break][break]

When she doesn't find the shadow she's looking for, the woman glances away and seems hesitant to retrieve another option. Gavin questions her and she glances over her shoulder at him, blinking and looking up at the Corviknight.[break][break]

"Not one that I trust."[break][break]

Her thumb brushes the Pokeball that contains her shiny Hydreigon, but she appears unwilling to bring the beast to light. She gestures to his own mount with her chin, though it's clear that asking for help is not something she does often.[break][break]

"You mind?"[break][break]

But she doesn't wait for his response, as she's already approaching the Corviknight - carefully, as it isn't hers, but with a determination.

Emma does not reach for a pokeball, and Gavin frowns thoughtfully at her words. Trust. It was something Gavin did not award easily, but he had always found it easier with Pokemon than people. People had ulterior motives, where Pokemon were reliable — if not because of trust, then because of the capsules that imprisoned their free will.[break][break]

It has not escaped his notice that Emma does not rely on her Pokemon as he does.[break][break]

She approaches his Corviknight, however, and Gavin does not protest. A shake of his head indicates that no, he does not mind, and the silver bird seems indifferent to her approach. It turns its large head to glance over its shoulder and down at the somewhat familiar woman — it had been Corviknight upon which they'd flown when Gavin had brought a wounded Emma to safety. Its red iris stares, unblinking, before its wings shudder and extend in silent invitation.[break][break]

"Fly high, Corviknight, and stick to the clouds where you can."[break][break]

As Gavin pulls the pin from his jacket, Emma will this time be conscious for the brilliant glow that arcs between the keystone and the anklet around the bird's foot. Wings spread, their span increases as the evolution lends its power.

Tucking the pin into his coat, Gavin climbs aboard Corviknight behind Emma and the bird takes wing.

Emma had never considered Pokemon reliable, at least, not more reliable than her own instincts. Pokemon were as unpredictable as strangers, willing to bite the bullet and react without warning if shit got tense. She knew what she was capable of, but she never knew what Pokemon were capable of, especially not the ones she had no control over.[break][break]

And even then, she wasn't sure that it was trust that kept them close to her, but fear.[break][break]

The woman's fingers brush the smooth metal of the Corviknight's wing. It's surprisingly warm despite how cold metal usually is. And the bird stares at her, and she stares back. It surprises her that she doesn't see fear in its eye. Just cold indifference. It's like staring in a reflection.[break][break]

As she settles against the Pokemon's back, she reflexively stiffens as Gavin slides in behind her. He's warm, and she glances back.

Gavin feels Emma tense as he settles against the familiar ridges of Corviknight's spine. Its muscles ripple beneath them as the bird beats its powerful wings and ascends toward the clouds, the wind tugging at Gavin's hair and clothing. He chooses not to acknowledge her stiffness; doing so could make for an uncomfortable flight.[break][break]

Once they've risen to an acceptable height, Gavin guides the bird with brushes along its feathers, indicating direction without having to yell over the rush of wind in his ears. Though the air had been warm near the ground, almost sticky, it's colder the higher they climb. He's grateful for the windbreaker, the way it catches the moisture from the low-lying clouds they fly above.[break][break]

Eventually, Corviknight finds a comfortable draft and rides it toward their goal.[break][break]

They begin to close in, the shape of the Mauville skyline gracing the horizon. Gavin's already scouting for a good position with plenty of coverage. The grassy ceiling of the titular 'Hills' was far too exposed, obvious.[break][break]

As they touch down outside the city limits, the indoor city looming ahead, Gavin dismounts and replaces his lapel pin.[break][break]

"There's a unit in the Hills being rented by one of our agents." Squinting at his reflection in Corviknight's wing, he fixes his hair. "They keep it vacant as a safehouse. I've got a key." From the same pocket where he'd stowed away the pin during their flight, he produces a small silver key. "If you'd like, we can make our way there. It's on the same floor as our target's."

The ride is uncomfortable because she makes it out to be. Unwilling to surrender herself to his warmth, to let herself get comfortable against his chest, she remains rigid and tense.[break][break]

Fortunately, her thoughts are elsewhere, planning their hit, plotting out the steps they'd need to take in order to succeed. She's played this game before with the target and she's lost. She won't lose this time.[break][break]

She soon becomes acutely aware of the damp in the air and the cold it brings. Even with her hyper-focused thoughts, she pulls her coat tighter around her.[break][break]

But then they ascend just outside the city limits and she slides off quickly, anxiously. She's thinking clearly despite how gutsy she seems, how impatient and careless she might appear. She knows what shes doing, she's just anxious to get it done.[break][break]

He speaks and she turns, anticipation making her eyes sharp as she studies his face. The glint of the silver key in his hand is not missed, and she feels a smile creep across her face. [break][break]

"Where have you been this whole time?"[break][break]

She chuckles a bit, quickly dismissing the comment she's just made before gesturing for him to get on with it and lead her to the safe house.
