This wasn't Cap's typical job. He was frankly a little miffed to have been assigned it, but he learned a long time ago that one doesn't argue with one's superiors. Especially if those superiors are part of the mob. So here he was, before the start of the fight, watching a throng of shady folks transform this abandoned warehouse into a surprisingly passable fighting ring. It was amazing how quickly they could put things together. Already the chain link cage in the center of the warehouse was assembled, and the organizer was pacing around it double checking the fixtures. This engagement was going to be standing-room only, so no seats would be set up; all the better since that meant even less time spent during teardown. There were banners going up along the walls, though with the spotlight trained squarely on the ring in the center, they were hard to make out.

Cap took another look around the room before heading to the front door. That's where Nemesis was standing, her arms crossed over her chest as she eyeballed every worker that passed her. She was the real enforcer here. Cap gave her a pat on the arm as he approached. He was supposed to have a partner for this job, he knew. They were tasked to stand at the door as people entered, making sure no one got in without the password. Then, once the doors closed and the fights started, they could move through the crowd looking for anything shady. Well, shady when compared to the general shadiness otherwise going on around them.

Ugh, what a bother.

Although acting as security, or as a bouncer, specifically, for an illegal fighting ring wasn't really her scene, the pay was good. Too good, in fact, and she felt compelled to take it. She wasn't hurting for cash per se, but a little extra lining in the pocket was never a bad thing. That, and she was more than capable of watching a door and ensuring that no one that wasn't invited got in.[break][break]

What she hadn't been expecting was to be partnered with the pretty blonde who'd passed her drinks across a counter and slipped her his number. [break][break]

She can see him now, standing by the front door next to the Nidoqueen that's been doing a fine job challenging every insignificant soul entering the building. That Pokemon alone could give anyone a run for their money.[break][break]

"Is this what you meant by gardening is dirty work? Cute."[break][break]

As she approaches, there's a particularly sultry smirk spreading across her face.

He knew he'd have a partner, but he hadn't expected to see Emma here. There was no logical reason for that, really; he knew she was part of Team Rocket—or at least he had a very strong hunch. When she approached him, he couldn't help the look of confusion that settled onto his face for a moment. It didn't take long, though, for him to slip into an easy sense of familiarity.

"That was a pretty good line, huh?" Cap grinned, his nose wrinkling. "Did you ever end up trying that little hole-in-the-wall bar I told you about? That place is great, I really need to go again." Nemesis looked Emma up and down with a suspicious eye before grunting approvingly and turning her attention back to the doorway. The handful of workers filed in and out, setting up what remained of the interior. There was a rope walkway that led to the back room where the contestants were waiting, more banners, and an announcers table that flanked the ring. On the table sat the prize: a comically-large sack of money placed delicately in the cup of a huge golden goblet. But the real prize is the memories made along the way, right?

There's a note of satisfaction that flits briefly across her otherwise expressionless face when she notes his surprise. The effect she has on people never gets old and she never tires from their discomfort. If one might even call it that.[break][break]

"Could have been better."[break][break]

Where Cap grins, Emma looks away, severing the light-hearted friendliness that he tries to start. Attachments are dangerous.[break][break]

But her sharp-eyed intensity refocuses on Caprice's baby blues.[break][break]

"No."[break][break]

When she catches the up-and-down glance from the man's Nidoqueen, Emma regards the Pokemon with an equally icy stare. For now, the only noise was the murmur of people getting ready for tonight's party. Or whatever it was supposed to be.[break][break]

It was merely easy money and music that wasn't terrible. She could do worse.

Cap's smile soured for just a half-second when she looked away. He squinted a bit. She was a hard one to read, wasn't she? His grin shifted from sour to wry. Maybe that's exactly how she liked it, keeping people on their toes, staying distant and mysterious. All right, keep your secrets. He shrugged halfheartedly, and put on an overly-dramatic sigh.

"Ah, I'll have to work on my lines, then. Always a work in progress, you know." People were starting to line up at the door, filing past the two of them and into the warehouse proper. VIPs first, naturally. Nemesis stared them down in turn, frowning at each person that crossed the threshold in a way that begged them to step out of line. "No?" He couldn't keep the incredulous tone out of his voice. "You'd love it so much. I can take you some time! I even promise not to talk." A long pause. "I promise to talk less." Another pause. "I'll do my best."

She catches the sour smile, even if it lasts only a moment. It brings a slight smirk to her own cheek, a twitch of facial muscles, an indication that she's amused by his discomfort at least to some extent. It was a relief, really. Maybe even more so that he was simultaneously perturbed by her and willing to stay in her orbit.[break][break]

Though honestly that still eluded her as to why anyone preferred keeping anyone in their circle. Rocket was full of attachment issues and partner activities. It was mind-boggling and frustrating. She was used to working alone so much she often despised even her own shadow.[break][break]

And yet, she had come to accept and perhaps even seek out companionship or partnership to some degree.[break][break]

So it surprises her more when he not only asks her out, but that she agrees.[break][break]

"Love it? You seem confident," she responds, a note of surprise in her voice.[break][break]

"Don't make promises you can't keep, love."[break][break]

She exhales, detaching her attention to lend it elsewhere. The scene was being set up and they would soon need to be on their guard. She's almost excited, maybe even itching for a fight, for action, for something. She seems to exude frustration and anticipation.
