The last few days had been...strange. Waking up at a hospital was normal enough, she supposed, but after finding her in the morgue, she had been trapped. Not truly, Kaida supposed, but it had felt like it. Countless tests of her heartbeat and other signs of life, even blood! They had also been very interested in the details of her life, as if ascertaining everything about her. It had been the strangest experience of her life. Finally, with instructions to be very careful and keep in contact with the Rangers constantly, she was released...with no mission to fulfil. That was even stranger to her. [break][break]

Her Pokemon stared at her like a ghost, people stared at her more than usual, and a persistent burning popped up on her left side everytime she thought it was in her imagination. With nothing else to do at the moment, Kaida managed to wrench some information from the staff that had found her about her saviors. Selena she knew, thank you, but the second was an unknown name. A Gym Leader, Alexei. They seemed uncertain, mumbling the name only as someone the savior resembled, but it was all Kaida had. [break][break]

There was no mission, she hadn't been contacted, and thus Kaida made a decision. She had heard the Gym had plenty of flying Pokemon, and was a medical facility! She could go over, thank her savior properly, make sure her oddly quiet and jumpy Pokemon were alright, and let her one flying Pokemon get some practice! It all seemed so simple and convenient to her. [break][break]

The forestry of Fortree was relaxing to fly over, even if Muspel occasionally flapped her wings wring and sent their flight down and their stomachs somewhere behind. Kaida clung to the Charizard's neck, looking over the land and feeling the burn devilishly make itself known again...she must be crazy. Even with the burn trying to drag her mood low, having nothing to do was starting to feel nice. Maybe Muspel and her could go hunting later. [break][break]

Miraculously, Muspel landed near the Gym smoothly, mouth gaping open as she spotted other Pokemon fluttering and flapping around. Patting the young draconian on the shoulder, Kaida guided them at the Gym, trying to remember how the savior had even looked. Pink...they were very pink.

Today was another long day at the Fortree Rescue and Treatment Sanctuary.[break][break]

Of course, one of the employees running around was still bothered by something—something really disturbing. Alexei was clearly distracted, having dropped more than a few things during the course of the day. There was just… something he couldn’t shake off from his mind.[break][break]

What the hell had happened a few days ago?![break][break]

He was still shaken from his very close brush with death, quite literally. He knew that the woman he had saved had died, and that Selena had promised vengeance for Kaida’s death—however he had yet to hear from the other Gym Leader. Perhaps she was busy with something…[break][break]

He had spaced out once more until one of the staff members called his attention.[break][break]

“Uh, Alex? Someone’s here to see you,” the younger blonde said, catching him from his little deep thinking episode. “You… you might want to see this. The person’s name is… Adachi, I think?”[break][break]

That was more than enough for him to suddenly snap out of the brooding funk, very nearly dropping the basin he was carrying. “Wait—what? Are you sure?”[break][break]

The staff member nodded, before catching the basin. “I’ll take this for you,” and with that the staff member went to the medical facility, leaving Alexei rather confused as he went to the front desk to meet whoever this was.[break][break]

Of course, he was not prepared to see a literal ghost standing there, blinking at him like she hadn’t even died.

This was decidedly not the person she remembered. It had to be right, she didn't think there was any reason to lie about it, but the appearance wasn't ringing any bells...perhaps the clothing had stuck in her mind, not to mention she didn't have a chance to hear a voice beyond the initial chaos. [break][break]

She had left Muspel outside, the young Charizard just amazed at everything around her, it would be good for the Flying-type to see some true fliers like her. Still, at that moment, she wished she brought in the familiar company. Here she was, again, feeling like the person in front of her was shocked over something she had no knowledge of. [break][break]

Ignoring a nagging irritation at the back of her mind, she drew her face back into a neutral position, and drew forward slightly, "Are you Alexei?" She asked curiously, trying to find some way to recognize the man in front of her was that saving...woman? Person? "You don't really know me, but I'm Kaida Adachi...I heard you're the one that saved me when the explosion happened." She didn't know, plain and simple, that the "saving" had unfairly failed, that she stood here against all odds. "Glad to see you lived, was a little worried about the others."

How—just how, how was this possible? How could someone he was so sure had died (hell, Selena had confirmed this) was right here, right now, in front of him like nothing had happened at all?[break][break]

“I—I’ve heard of you from S-Selena,” he began, stammering as he leaned forward to catch himself on the back of the empty receptionist’s chair. He was looking much paler than usual. “It… we both did, Selena and me. A-although…” he continued, looking around and hoping that none of his really nosy staff members were nearby.[break][break]

“Like, can—can we talk? In private? Somewhere nobody can… hear us?” he offered. He did have a place on the Sanctuary grounds to live in when he wasn’t over at the other apartment that had his lease name on it. Surely the place was private enough as it could get, right…?[break][break]

“I have… I have… a g-great many q-questions, to ask you… if you don’t mind…” he added a few moments later.

Not good. Something was scaring this Alexei. Instinctively, Kaida looked around in an almost mirror, the damned burning flaring up again as she swallowed down an irrational stab of fear. "Although...?" Although what!? She nearly snarled, holding her tongue lest she not understand what this was about. [break][break]

And now she felt a reason to be a little frightened, suspicion clouding her voice as she looked out to Muspel, who seemed to sense the charged air and looked inside to tilt her head at Kaida, "If I can bring my family with me." She laid out her own need firmly, no more being trapped while people investigated something she knew was around, but had no idea of. This something also seemed very important, given someone like her could tell the air was choking with a sort of fear or disbelief, "It must be important to not be heard...Where will we go?" [break][break]

Muspel was still not an amazing flier, but she could easily take them to any secluded area. Forests made good practice for landing on unfamiliar ground, after all.

“The walls have ears, even here,” he began shortly as he looked around. Sure, there wasn’t anyone else besides the two of them currently present, however there were cameras rolling around the complex—spread out as a precautionary measure, of course.[break][break]

“Yes, it’s… it’s rather important that we shouldn’t be overhead,” he added a few moments later. Considering her own concession before going along with him, he then shrugged.[break][break]

“Would I look like someone who would attack you, I ask? With a title like mine, what would I gain from attacking someone like you out of turn, out of a gym battle?” he continued as he regained his balance before looking around once more.[break][break]

“Follow me.”[break][break]

He then led the way through a side door—while passing through the expansive outdoor arena that had tall, freestanding lights to accommodate for evening gym challenges as well as various perches that were either currently occupied or vacant. Majority of the Pokémon in his care frequented these perches, and if she would look around there were two Pelipper.[break][break]

One of them would look slightly familiar to her, maybe.[break][break]

There was a Braviary soaring overhead who’d noticed that his human companion was headed over to the small living complex situated not too far from the open-air arena, but Alexei looked up and raised his hand.[break][break]

“No, Kyouya—not today. There’s no battle today, although would you mind if you called Gabriel and stood guard over there?” he pointed at the quarters where he practically lived at that point. “Just keep an eye out for us, will you?”[break][break]

Nodding, the Braviary then left to find its partner-in-crime, said aforementioned Salamence. Eventually they would reach the living quarters situated some distance away from the open-air arena and the Sanctuary proper.[break][break]

“Ladies first,” he went on, unlocking the door and opening the light for her before motioning to step inside.

Did he look like someone who would attack her? Kaida stared a moment longer, narrowing her eyes as it seemed she was seriously considering those words, and barked out a short, "You don't look capable of it." Besides, he was letting her bring her companions. She securely doubted anybody would try anything when a Charizard was looming over them. [break][break]

She followed with perhaps a little less urgency that was appropriate, finding herself lingering behind as she spotted a familiar face. Something about one of the Pelipper caught her eye and, spotted or not, she stopped briefly and bowed her head in a quick thanks, lips pulling up in a smile at the Pokemon. Behind her, Muspel finally caught up, stomping on the ground instead of flying like her fellows. She would also be a guard, if one that was a little unskilled. [break][break]

Kaida hesitated only a moment at the actual quarters, leaving Muspel at the door, she'd find some space and release Hema, sighing as she cringed at the sight of her. "I seem to be scaring many people today." She mumbled at a volume barely audible, raising it towards Alexei, "...You had questions, correct? Er...I'll try and answer.

“You are?” he inquired softly, perhaps a little too innocently for his own good. He was quite aware that his Ranger friend had gone through some real bad shit lately, having lost almost an entire squad of good men and women to some unknown cause, and now this?[break][break]

The living proof of what literally was ‘death-defying’ was right here in his small living room.[break][break]

“I wanted to ask—what exactly happened? I saw the flames heading right at you,” he began quietly. How he was there at the time it happened, he would get to later—if the question itself came up.[break][break]

For the moment, he would hold his silence and let her speak as he sat down on one of the armchairs, the better to observe her reaction.[break][break]

If the Seviper was smart enough, it would definitely detect the scent wafting from him being similar to that of the other companion that had brought her out to safety…

Inside was a comfy space, and Kaida relaxed as Alexei sat down. Hema looked at the man in disbelief, but slithered closer at the familiar smell. She didn't doubt her own senses, but currently, with a ghost still lingering near, she doubted what she concluded using those senses. Kaida found a wall to lean on, coming to terms that this was, indeed, her savior. Hema would not draw close like that for anybody. "Yes...look. Hema stares at me like she thinks she's seeing things." So was Hel and Freya, so the only Pokemon that were freaking out around her were those present during the tree incident. That couldn't be a coincidence. [break][break]

"What happened?" Perhaps he was knocked out too in the chaos? A little strange to ask her then. "They were fangs made of flames. Two were saving me...Selena and you, I think, I don't remember you, sorry." She remembered out loud, grimacing as the burning sensation seemed to respond to her thoughts, flaring and sending her stomach churning, "It bit me." The burning made a convienent way to trace where she was hit, at least, "It hit me pretty bad on the left," An understatement, but she could barely recall the pain, just that it had been the worst she ever felt, "It must have hit important parts, because I don't remember anything else." [break][break]

Something uneasy settled in the back of her mind, a question that she didn't know how to word, "I woke up at the hospital, and they were very shocked, but I was healed." Abruptly, she blurted out the strangest part of her awakening, barely wanting to mention it...but she did say she would say as much as she knew, right? "...It was on a table, not surgery, I don't think. H-how was I saved?" She wavered at the end, barely able to consider where she had waken up, and what it meant. Cruel of her to ask such a question to a stranger, though.

The moment she had mentioned that Selena was there, he nodded. Although, to be fair, when she had mentioned that she couldn’t remember him… well, it was actually time to reveal something.[break][break]

“I think your Seviper is looking strange at me, too… but I can explain all that. Give me… five minutes, or so.”[break][break]

Maybe he would need more than that, really. He then stood up from where he had previously located himself and headed deeper into the living complex, eventually disappearing into the place he called his bedroom. Normally it would take him upwards of thirty or so minutes to get dressed, but this was a different case.[break][break]

Once he was finished, he slipped on the heeled boots but didn’t lace them up and slung on the pink overcoat which he was sure the woman would remember. He’d almost forgotten the long hair, and once that was on, he—she re-emerged from the room and made their way back to the living room.[break][break]

Making sure to change his voice’s pitch, they then sat down in the exact same place once more before speaking out.[break][break]

“How about—now? Do you remember me?” Alexei—rather, Irina, for the moment, inquired of the other woman. “Pink, right? Pink, long-haired, with a Pelipper companion hanging onto Selena as well…”

When Alexei stood up and disappeared, Kaida ended up seated on the ground in the short time frame she was alone in, staring at the ground before she risked a look up at Hema. Still nervous. Her scales had changed color too. Kaida heard that some creatures lose certain pigments in grief, maybe that hit had scared Hema so much, she was striken with such a change? Before she could try and address this to the serpent, Kaida found herself rising to meet the savior, just the way she remembered them! [break][break]

Her fist met her hand, as if solving a mystery, face lighting up as recognition finally sparked, "Thank goodness! It's you...yes, this is how I remembered you!" The glee and recognition suddenly dissolved, replaced by confusion, "Were you trying to hide your face?...Ah, wasn't there easier ways? It is effective but...strange?" Whatever answer she got, it would be received with the typical stoicness and want to understand that Kaida took all of her information in with. A disguise was a disguise, she thought. [break][break]

Drawing closer, clearly more comfortable, if suddenly so, Kaida found herself leap onto another thought her mind raced to. Perhaps it was the unease that constantly plagued her life, she didn't want more of a void in her memories, and questioned confusingly, "Then, were you hurt too? You were there, why are you asking how it went? I was the one unconscious, right?"

“I have my reasons for hiding my real identity… especially when a much higher-ranking person suddenly appears and catches me in an awkward position. I have to be careful these days, you know,” he explained, making his voice go back to normal as he unbuttoned the coat.[break][break]

It was stupidly hot in Fortree these days, being so close to summer—and coats like what he—she—had on were a little too hot to be worn safely![break][break]

“You know how it is when you’ve got the reputation of a city to protect… especially with someone like me who’s been in this position for some time now. I can’t risk my head too much because of certain reasons,” he explained as he began to take off the wig he’d placed atop his own hair.[break][break]

Once the hair net had come off, he was pretty much back to his normal self. “It was something a friend of mine came up with. She has a different set of Pokémon as compared to me, to make the disguise even more convincing,” he added a few moments later.[break][break]

Now that he had gotten that out of the way…[break][break]

“I wanted to ask, what had prompted that gigantic red flame to attack you? Had you done something before that?” he meant to inquire of Kaida. Now he was getting somewhere.[break][break]

“In my case, I was too busy watching Selena’s ass, since we’d agreed to come to check this out together and see what’s going on with the strange tree…” he went on.

To protect one's reputation was an understandable enough concept to Kaida, though she had to wonder why a reputation would drop after trying to help a situation...no, never mind, she didn't have to wonder why. If she was concluded to be simple by her manner of speaking, then it didn't seem strange that Alexei would be concluded as evil if he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. "I see why...people can be very..." A more polite word didn't come to mind as she stared at her hands, so she spat out the original idea, "Stupid. I won't let you be in trouble." Alexei didn't have to be afraid of her revealing anything, she didn't make a habit of spouting her allies' personal subjects. [break][break]

She stared for a moment as Alexei asked another question, skipping over her own, but sighed and allowed it. Maybe this was really important for her to answer things first. [break][break]

She had not seen her attacker, nor had she really seen the attack in its entirety, but Kaida could guess. "Freya used Sludge Wave down to where the attack came from, so maybe I hurt them or an ally." On the subject of allies, another inspiration came to mind, "Or they thought I was attacking their ally when I jumped for the Braviary...maybe?" It was a little bit of a jump to conclude the other was an enemy, but it was the only things she could think of. "They seemed good at aiming, to hurt me like that. Maybe they hurt others like that before." She shook her head, frowning at the memory, "It's my fault, leaving myself open like that...I must have been a tempting target to spill blood with."

He listened quietly, taking mental notes as she explained what she had done before everything had gone to all hell and they’d ended up in this mess. How she had seemingly revived without any repercussions from the burns that had taken her life… things were getting stranger and stranger.[break][break]

After what he presumed to be a healthy silence passed, he then looked at her once more.[break][break]

“I—I know I skipped over a question of yours, and I apologize for that. I just had to make sure I had all the details of what happened,” he began after he had finished thinking long and hard about what she’d informed him.[break][break]

“Thankfully I wasn’t injured during the fiasco, although I did notice that someone liked to use a certain move a lot… not until Selena mentioned what it was. Fairy Lock. It happened once on the first floor and then again on the second… did you notice at all?” he asked.[break][break]

“Wait, before you answer that—there’s a reason why I had to confirm that you hadn’t done anything too rash… it’s because. Well,” he stammered as he faltered a few moments before taking a breath.[break][break]

Nobody knows this… well, nobody right now does. I haven’t told Florian about this either, but then again… he continued to ponder privately as he collected his thoughts.[break][break]

“I wasn’t hurt, but I was def…definitely shaken. After what happened, when…when we brought you out away from the explosion that brought the place down…”
