crimson flames dance across the once-quaint rooftops of suburban homes in lilycove. its residents seek refuge on the road, away from the scorching hot fires that continue to bellow. the sound of sirens echo in the near vicinity as help starts to arrive. but it might be a little too late for some.

lance moves through the road, making sure to briefly check on people and their injuries. he doesn't stop until he reaches a yougn girl, no more than ten years of age, who calls out to him and latches on to him like he's a lifeline.

"m-mister! please...i can't find my bulbasaur. i think she might still be inside." her voice trails off as she turns to look at her burning home. the fires have yet to grow as wild as some of the other houses, but it's still by no means an easy task. lance grabs her hand and kneels by her side.

"don't worry, i'll find her." promises are dangerous and yet he makes one anyways. "what's her name?"

She shouldn't be involved - this isn't her scene. She isn't a ranger, an officer, a medic. She's a teacher caught up in something too big for her, but she had been caught by the same ten-year old that Lance is stopped by. The expression in the girls face had been so raw and real that she hadn't been able to walk away.[break][break]

And so Thea had reached for her Delphox and stormed the castle in search of this trapped Bulbasaur.[break][break]

With the use of psychic energy, Thea was virtually unharmed while rushing from room to room, her skirts bunched in her fists. The Delphox is nimble, twirling her wand to make sure that the flames didn't touch either of them. But the effort is exhausting and it's a matter of time, they're running out of time.[break][break]

Outside, the little girl would - between sobs - attempt to tell Lance that her Bulbasaur's name was Lettuce, and that an older woman had already run into the building with a Delphox to find her, but they hadn't come back out yet.[break][break]

Inside, Thea had finally found the trapped Lettuce, curling the burned and terrified Pokemon in her arms while now searching for an exit.

a sudden sense of urgency overcomes him and he darts his eyes back to the burning building, peering through the bright flames to try and make sense of things. he's barely able to see the faintest of outlines and he curses under his breath, stepping away from the kid to rush forward.

a hand to his belt finds leija's pokeball. "stick to me, just like we trained." the mantyke is not afforded a moment to get up to speed before lance is rushing into the building. he bursts through the front door and immediately follows where he had last seen the outline.

an AQUA RING surrounds them, fending off the flames that look to burn. he holds whatever bit of cloth he can to his mouth and nose as he peers through the thick of the smoke. once he arrives in the kitchen, the two figures are hard to miss.

a WATER PULSE grants them a brief moment to breathe before he's grabbing the woman by her arm. "this way."

She's inhaling too much smoke, squinting through the heat. It stings, burns in her lungs and in her eyes. She's coughing and where it started as an occasional clearing of her throat it becomes more persistent, more aggressive.[break][break]

Thea covers her mouth with her arm but it's a little too little, too late for that. That is, until a figure appears in the doorway when she isn't looking and strong fingers grip her arm, pulling it away from her mouth and closer to him. She gasps, surprise widening her eyes. Fortunately, her grip on the sick Bulbasaur is strong and she doesn't slip.[break][break]

Delphox does, however, faltering under the pressure and because she's been startled. It results in flames reaching across the invisible barrier. Thea's been standing too close to a bookshelf set aflame and the flames threaten to make the leap between dry paper to the arm of her dress and the Bulbasaur within.[break][break]

She cries out in pain as the flames burn at her skin and she wrenches her arm from Lance reactively, patting the flames out and moving Bulbasaur instinctively.[break][break]

More coughs ensue but she's stepping closer to Lance, waiting for him to lead the way out.

[attr="class","lancepost"]out of the two humans it becomes clear which one of them is more experienced with the situation. the smoke is suffocating but he finds his breath easier than she does, which is why his movements are more fluid as they make their way out of the kitchen.

something happens that's out of his vision but he turns back when he hears a cry. even through the smoke he's able to see how the fire burned her arm. he almost winces but he steels himself and clicks his tongue once.

another WATER PULSE emerges from the mantyke on his back, completely drenching thea and the bulbasaur but effectively keeping them more safe from the fire. he shifts his focus back ahead and it doesn't take him long to find the exit and once he steps through it, he's gasping for air.

Water sprays over her and the Bulbasaur and she gasps at the sudden cold, at the relief it brings her burned arm. It's a temporary relief, however, and the pain continues to throb as they push their way through the smoke. On the other side of the door, she can hear the little girl cry out in relief.[break][break]

Before she could run closer to the burning building, however, an adult swings their arm around to prevent her from running blind into danger. Her little arms reach out for Thea, for her Pokemon, but Thea is breathless, struggling to catch her breath.[break][break]

In the process she lets the Bulbasaur go, and the tiny green dinosaur leaps forward to sprint across the yard and back into the little girls arms.[break][break]

Thea wipes wet hair from her face and peels back the charred sleeve to reveal the bright red skin beneath. It's not life-threatening but it isn't pretty either. She sucks in a breath and Delphox lingers nearby, expression concerned and guilty.

[attr="class","lancepost"]it takes little time for him to find his bearings. he blinks, noticing the bulbasaur sprinting across the yard to her trainer. he breathes a sigh of relief, posture less tense as he turns to the woman.

"thea–" the recognition only hits him then and steps to close the distance. he glances down at the bright red skin before ushering her away from the building. "you should not have been in there." but there's little use dwelling on the past.

now a safe distance away from the building, he takes a moment to better look at the burn on her arm. "it's not too serious but it still needs to be tended to." he waves for a medic to come over. what he says next escapes him as he meets her eyes. "i had it under control."

It's only then that she recognizes the voice and comes to her senses to also recognize the man's face. When he says her name, she responds similarly before he ushers her away.[break][break]

"Lance?"[break][break]

She gasps as he guides her away from the building. Whether he's careful not to manhandle her or not, she's conscious of how close he is and how urgent his actions are. He chastises her for her decision to run into the building, and, while she would normally share the sentiment, she doesn't.[break][break]

Especially not when he insists he had it under control.[break][break]

"It would have been too late. By the time I found the Bulbasaur the ceiling above it had collapsed. If I'd been a second slower he would have been crushed."[break][break]

She hisses as the medics look over her arm, cutting away at the fabric to expose skin. Her hand flexes reactively and she doesn't have the stomach to look at the damage.[break][break]

"It had to be me."

[attr="class","lancepost"]adrenaline starts to subside and the clarity it brings is what makes him understand the gravity of her words. she's right: the bulbasaur would have died if not for her help. and perhaps it's because of that understanding that he doesn't push further. he drops the topic entirely, sighing as he watches the medic peel the fabric off.

"i'm just glad you're safe."

his attention is pulled away by a scream and he wastes no time moving in the direction of it. he turns and points at thea. "leave being reckless to me. you stay put now." and he's off running.

it doesn't take him long to reach the source of the scream. it's just a little bit down the road from where they were, and similar to last time, a woman pleads for her nincada. there is no hesitation in his movements as he enters the burning house.

Thea swallows the lump in her throat at his comment, unwilling to look him in the eyes until he's running off. Instead, she focuses on the medic bandaging her arm, running her through the steps to look after it and reminding her to visit a hospital to check on healing progress.[break][break]

Of course, her concentration on burn remedies is quickly severed when Lance tells her to stay put. She'd heard the scream but her arm was practically vice-gripped in the medic's grasp. Not that she really wanted to brave another burning building.[break][break]

But she opens her mouth to object, perhaps a small part of her worried for his safety too.[break][break]

"Delphox, follow him. Don't let him get hurt."[break][break]

Unfortunately, the dual-type is too slow to pursue him into the building, and the Pokemon lingers outside, probing with psychic energy to locate the man and his adorable Mantyke backpack.

[attr="class","lancepost"]the situation quickly evolves into something much more deadly than the last one. the smoke here is intense; thick and dark and heavy and he struggles to catch his breath even this early on. the AQUA RING does little to help but he knows time is of the essence.

wood starts to crack underneath his footsteps as he climbs up the stairs. flames lick away at the fabric of his attire and he feels his skin boiling underneath. the first WATER PULSE causes the fire to disperse for moments before returning in even more intensity. he grimaces but pushes through until he finds the room.

his eyes searches with urgency for the nincada and he finds it balled up in the far corner of the room. he makes his approach, careful to avoid the fires in the room until he slides to his knees by the bug-type. "it's okay, come here," he extends out for it and wraps it in his arms, shielding it from the heat. another WATER PULSE helps keep them drenched.

the fires have grown out of control and dread fills him when he turns back towards the door. "fuck." his path out is blocked and barely visible through the smoke. he rises to his feet and looks at the only possible exit, wincing at the thought but knowing it needs to be done.

"i need you to stop our fall, leija."

it's the only warning she'll get as he takes a step back before lunging out the window, breaking the glass. he turns his body as he falls so he'd land on his side. the mantyke is at an awkward angle but she manages to release a stream of HYDRO PUMP to counteract their momentum. but it's not enough.

Delphox lingers by the front door only until the exit becomes blocked. It quickly becomes impossible to see through the blackening smoke, her psychic senses struggling to find anything moving within.[break][break]

And yet she doesn't leave because the man hasn't returned. Instead, she begins searching the roof, the windows, any possible outside exit. If the front door was no longer an option, he must be looking for something else.[break][break]

Sure enough, she watches as he crashes through the window, aiming to fall to the ground. The angle of his body and the Mantkyke's is concerning and it's only due to quick reflexes and instinct that they don't shatter bones in the fall.[break][break]

There's physical strain in the dual-type's expression as she cushions their fall herself with whatever remained of her psychic strength. The moment they touch the ground she seems to slump before running to escort them from the flames. [break][break]

With the fire licking at her backside and a barrier between it and them, they would have a few moments to escape with her close on their heels.

[attr="class","lancepost"]the heavy stream of water pushes against the ground and it does what it can to counteract the momentum. a quick glance down tells him it's not going to be enough to stop their fall and so he braces himself for the bone shattering impact.

except it never comes. lance opens his eyes and sees the ground mere inches away. despite that, his body never stops tensing, and the moment he touches the ground, he springs back to his feet with the help of the delphox and sprints to safety. the flames try to lick his ass but they fall short.

"i told you i'd get her," he says to the woman as he extends over her nincada. the bug-type flutters across and immediately buries itself into her arms. it looks up at him with glossy-eyes and though its expression doesn't say much, lance thinks it's gratitude. or so he hopes. the woman expresses hers as well and he simply smiles and nods before walking away.

the medic and thea come into sight and he's almost stumbling towards them. his bones and body are fine but it's all the smoke he's inhaled. "hey i think i need some help." he points to his chest. "breathing is hard and it's not supposed to be." and as the medic starts to tend to his conditions, lance gives thea an appreciative smile.

"thank you for saving me."
