It's not a place she wants to be in.

Well, to be precise-- it's not a city she wants to be in. Katherine enters the gym with a slight reluctance, and her features unintentionally reveal some of the anxiety that always came along with visiting her hometown. What if she sees her parents? This thought repeats itself in the back of her mind, almost akin to a warning of sorts. When Kat was asked whether if she desires a broadcasted match or not - the answer was an immediate no.

She didn't need a distraction.
She only needed to get this challenge over with.

"Hey, hello." Her hand lifts to wave at the receptionist in order to draw their attention. "I am here for my gym challenge."

Her smile is soft and thin, but it is anything but genuine. After all, she was famed for a collection of masks in the organization she worked for. She kept one on regardless of the occasion, and as far as she was concerned? A fake smile worked just as well as an actual mask in most areas.

"I assume the new gym leader is busy as is, so I don't want to take more of his time than necessary. Just point me in the direction of where I am supposed to be, please." Despite being polite, there is a certain hint of firmness in the Fairburne's tone that demands for things to go her way.

[attr="class","devonpost"]the receptionist regards katherine's smile as genuine because there's no reason not to. she nods and leads the challenger right to the battlefield. private matches tend to be easier as very little setup is required, so only ten minutes pass before alexander steps out on to the battlefield himself. he first greets her.

"apologies for the wait, miss fairburne. i take it you're ready to begin?"

his two choices take up the battlefield. the lapras floats on the water and the clawitzer sinks into the murky depths. small patches of land litter the battlefield, surrounded by water.

"you may have the first move."

A nod ensues first and then a smile.

"I am ready." Her pre-selected pair of Pokeballs are retrieved from her bag, each being sent out shortly after the gym leader's partners. Unlike Alexander's pair, Katherine's own shared no typing and seemed more like an unlikely duo. Aegislash floated above a patch of land whereas Garchomp opted to dive into the water too.

"Oh? That's nice of you." It wasn't always this way from her experience. "As long as you're sure you won't regret it, mister Stone." Her smile is a tad bit more genuine than before, cheeky in every sense of the word.

Aegislash is the first of Katherine's Pokemons to act. He floats at a relatively calm pace until Katherine orders him to speed it up, "Caliburn. IRON HEAD." Despite the lack of direction he's given, it's clear that he's after Lapras. After all, he was much more visible. The sword glows with a magnificent silver hue before attempting to clash with Lapras' head - and that is when Garchomp reveals himself from the depths.

His own head glows with the same shade of silver, IRON HEAD executed by him as well.

It's an assault from both directions.

[attr="class","devonpost"]despite the natural ability to swim, garchomp will never come out the victor in an aquatic battle. it swims through murky waters but its location is never an unknown. the clawitzer makes sure of it. it's what allows the interception to happen.

clawitzer takes the IRON HEAD of the garchomp, able to brace through the pain due to its typing. in his large claw a shade of purple and orange shoot out at the dragon-type–a DRAGON PULSE that's boosted by MEGA LAUNCHER. the attack looks to keep the garchomp in the water, in advantageous territories.

lapras doesn't have the same luxury of being naturally resistant to the IRON HEAD that collides. he cries out in pain, eyes shutting for moments but he's quick to retaliate with a HYDRO PUMP.

alexander watches the battle closely.

Aegislash is hit by the torrent of water, albeit it sustains little damage. Naturally resistant to the element, it seems to barely slow him down. Water continues to drip from the sword, small drops that collect at the tip of the blade before falling down.

"SACRED SWORD, Caliburn."

The hue Aegislash glowed with changed from silver to a luminous, pale shade of blue. It seems to extend the reach of the blade before he sweeps in the air in an attempt of reaching Lapras with the move.

Garchomp, however, is not as lucky. The boosted DRAGON PULSE certainly manages to hurt it and leave marks on the land shark pokemon. In retaliation, it begins to swim faster to catch up to Alexander's Clawitzer. Rather than focusing on the Lapras, it attempts to SLAM into the water-type and bring the battle close to it. He wouldn't allow the luxury and comfort of attacking from afar anymore, not if he could help it.

[attr="class","devonpost"]as immobile as lapras may be, they are allowed a brief opportunity to react. no orders need to come from alexander because his pokemon know better. lapras takes a dive into the water, barely managing to avoid the SACRED SWORD. he continues to wade through the depths in an attempt to stay out of range.

the garchomp starts its chase and it moves swiftly in the water, almost surprisingly for a pokemon its size. it catches up to clawitzer and SLAMS its body into the water-type. the damage transfers and clawitzer feels his body tensing, but he fights off the possible paralysis. to counter, he shoots another DRAGON PULSE at the garchomp and uses the momentum to swim around the garchomp. clawitzer attempts to get back to where his partner is.

Aegislash is left to levitate in the air, a tad confused by the disappearance of the Lapras. It seemed as if he wasn't prepared for that to happen, but it does not stop him from redirecting his eye to the water and search for some sort of a sign. Where was everyone?

At the sight of a second DRAGON PULSE being charged, Garchomp's body begins to glow with an ethereal, azure glow. It enhances his speed even inside the water, allowing him to quickly swim up and away - where he leaps out of the water and returns to land.

He glances around until he catches his partner with his eyes, and then directs his eyes towards the water once more. Aegislash moves towards the same patch of land, remaining close to the dragon-type.

"Wait for them. You know what to do."

[attr="class","devonpost"]that's more like it. the ambiguity in her orders makes it difficult for them to counter her next moves. so the two do what they're trained to do and they play to their strengths and remain in the water. lapras will have to come up for air eventually, but they know to stretch their limits.

a HEAL PULSE launches at lapras and heals some of the damage done by the previous IRON HEAD. the two stick close to each other as lapras opens her mouth and SINGS a soothing melody, targeted at the garchomp. if they can eliminate one of the threats then this battle should be much easier for them to handle.

they continue to wait in the water.

If they had no intention to join Katherine's pokemon above the water, then they had to be forced.

And although her next orders sound a bit confusing at first, Garchomp and Aegislash are perfectly capable of understanding where their trainer was aiming. "Make it rain for us, Chomps." Rain dance..? In what world does it benefit Kat's team?

That's right.

It doesn't.

And it's not your ordinary rain Garchomp calls for, but instead, he charges an orange sphere in his mouth and aims up towards the ceiling, where the orb splits and smaller meteors begin to shoot down and descend all across the arena. Some of the water is bound to evaporate and Katherine expects it to somewhat force the other duo to act. If not, they were the ones to suffer the consequences, no?

Caliburn's shadow then extends and dives deep into the water, where it seeks to use this opportunity to assault the nearest of Alexander's pokemon - should the DRACO METEOR help him sight one of them, at least.

[attr="class","devonpost"]they can't avoid the DRACO METEORS that fall. lapras and clawitzer scatter in the water, doing their best to weave back and forth to avoid getting hit by the full mass of one. this creates enough separation for a SHADOW SNEAK to strike clawitzer, damaging.

lapras breaks from the water, gasping for air, as he struggles to deal with the pain of the DRACO METEOR. but he notices the garchomp now on land after having dived into the water and sees the droplets of water that drench its ROUGH SKIN. lapras knows what to do.

a sudden cold frosts over them as a BLIZZARD is summoned. even the aegislash in the water is not immune to its effects as the sudden drop in temperature looks to overwhelm.

clawitzer uses the close proximity to fire off a boosted DARK PULSE, hoping knock the aegislash away.

Silence befalls Katherine when the pair of water-types finally decide to show themselves.

It's a well-crafted assault that's aimed at Aegislash and none else - and it seems to be the wrong target for the duo to focus on. Once more, it shifts in air and its stance finally reverts back to its SHIELD FORME. KING'S SHIELD is executed, and in doing so, the ghost-type erects a glowy, blue shield to surround himself, blocking both the DARK PULSE and the BLIZZARD from ever reaching it.

Caliburn is kept protected from the BLIZZARD thanks to its shield, but the same could not be said for Garchomp. The icy wind pelts the dragon-type and forces a cry of distress, Lapras' attack seemingly landing a decisive blow against him. However, he's not quite ready to give up. Worn down by the damage he has suffered, a deep breath prepares Garchomp for the next move.

DRAGON RAGE is charged in his maw in the form of another sphere, and then blast of blue energy is aimed from afar at Clawitzer and none other.

[attr="class","devonpost"]the KING'S SHIELD is annoying but it does little to deter them from the objective of the battle. they waste little time dwelling on it and both pokemon turn their attention to the garchomp.

the blue energy that emits from the garchomp is more than familiar--it's telling. clawitzer has been on the receiving end of DRAGON RAGES and no matter who uses it, the damage stays relatively the same. it is a phenomenon alexander cannot explain but it is one he'll take advantage of. clawitzer takes the hit in full and despite the fixed damage, he comes dangerously close to fainting.

with the aegislash playing defense, it leaves the garchomp vulnerable. a DRAGON PULSE fires from clawitzer at close range and the space created is enough for lapras to aim a precise ICE BEAM at the dragon-type.

As the next attacks are being charged by Lapras and Clawitzer, Garchomp seems to contemplate and weigh his options. Should he jump back into the water or try to dig into the land this arena provided? Alas, this moment of hesitation proves to be a fatal mistake - both the DRAGON PULSE and the ICE BEAM connect as he finally attempts to dig.

The first of the attacks, Clawitzer's, pushes him away whereas the ICE BEAM finishes the job completely. He faints without much of a struggle or even a swan song.

One of Katherine's fists clench when she witnesses her pokemon go down first, but it isn't over just yet.

Caliburn's shadow extends as he shifts back to his BLADE FORME, and once more, it attempts to strike Clawitzer. It uses Garchomp's fainting as, well, an opportunity and nothing else. He didn't share a lot of sentiments towards his partner in crime, it seemed.

"You did great, Chomps. Caliburn can handle himself."

The dragon-type returns to his Pokeball to rest, and Katherine's attention is immediately set upon her Aegislash again.

[attr="class","devonpost"]the garchomp faints and the clawitzer soon follows. the water-type is unable to hold on after being hit with the final SHADOW SNEAK. his unconscious body simply floats to the surface before being recalled.

the situation grows bleak because alexander knows his lapras will only be able to take two attacks at most. the aegislash is strong, powerful, and though conditioned, there is only so much punishment lapras can take. and they both know the aegislash has only taken one attack so far. it seems like a lost battle.

"avoid it."

lapras rocks back and forth and summons a large SURF of a wave. it flows towards the aegislash, looking to sink it into the murky depths of the water. speaking of--that is where lapras goes as well as he dives back down into the water, disappearing from sight.
