Katherine had made the reservation for this time slot a couple of weeks back and until yesterday, she had completely forgotten about it. Some receptionist called to remind her about the challenge and the early hour they've scheduled it for.
She really didn't want to reschedule.

Although now Kat was half-expecting a massive headache to hit her tomorrow. Waking up that early never worked out well for her, and she seemed to pack her bag reluctantly. Immediately upon being sent out, Gallade could tell that something was wrong. However, he voiced no concern or worry and simply teleported his trainer across a series of jumps until they've reached Mauville city.

Upon arrival, she made haste to book a room in the first inn she spotted and spent most of the night... Well, doing anything except for sleeping. It was most certainly the worst way to prepare for a challenge.

The next day, the Rocketess was welcomed inside the gym with a kind smile by the receptionist, but she wasn't in the right mood to respond with a smile of her own. Instead, she politely asked to be directed towards the maze– where the lack of sleep finally began to kick in.
But despite the obstacle she'd put herself against, Kat managed to find her way inside.

The arena was eventually reached and there, the promised gym leader was found - Cait Alfric. Her lips curve slightly as a forced smile is mustered.

"Hey. I am Katherine. I hope I haven't kept you waiting for too long."

that was the first thought which crossed cait's mind as katherine took her place. her own response to the woman's politely-worded greeting delayed by a single beat as she unabashedly eyed the dark-skinned female.

"you haven't."

the gym leader put on a smile that oozed a curious amount of warmth.

"it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

she dipped her head and a pokemon leapt into view, emerging from the forest which bordered the field. it was a pokemon whom she had been working to train for the past few months - a personal gift from Stormy Silph that had been graciously bestowed upon her sometime ago.

"this will be a one on one," she began. "the last pokemon left standing will determine whether or not you're worthy of my badge. whenever you're ready you're more than welcome to the first move."

The warmth Cait's smile exuded almost made Katherine feel uncomfortable. She was certainly not used to it and there's an element of surprise that creeps to her expression when her eyes widen some. However, her own smile returns shortly afterward, and then she nods.

"I've heard plenty about your gym. It really is as beautiful as they say it is." She wasn't the biggest fan of nature or the outdoors, in fact, Kat preferred the city over anything else. But not appreciating the beauty of the gym's maze seemed almost insulting.

"One on one, right. Simple."

A Pokeball is retrieved all while Katherine spares Simisage another glance. After the red beam of the device dissipates, a Milotic emerges in her full glory. Her posture is regal, fitting only for a pokemon who had been hailed as the most beautiful of them all.

"The first move is ours, Serenity. Prepare yourself."

The moisture in the air is condensed into water droplets, which are then shaped into a trio of rings that surround the serpentine pokemon.

"what a lovely pokemon," cait praised, a gleam in her eye. "it suits you."

her tone oozed with a curiously infectious warmth, the woman's smile appearing to brighten somewhat as she eyed the majestic beast.

'i'm surprised she'd pick a water-type.'

traditionally trainers would go for far more advantageous options type-wise.

"leer, simisage."

the grass monkey struck a pose, which was unnecessarily dramatic as they peered through their spread fingers at their respective foe.

It's only natural that Katherine considers it to be a compliment. After all, this particular species was known for its beauty and the calmness it spread among mankind during dark times. Choosing a water-type for this particular gym made little to no sense, but, there was no other way to test her skills without putting herself at a disadvantage.

The pose that the grass-type executes along with the LEER causes Milotic to stir in place for several moments, but her trainer comes to her aid. "Calm down, Serenity. We got this." Only a hesitant nod is given before the pokemon regains her composure.

The wind inside the arena seems to react to Katherine's words as well, beginning to swirl around her partner's tail before collecting into an orb. The same silvery orb is slapped towards Simisage by the water-type's tail, and from within it, a harsh tornado is released.
