It doesn't honestly matter what side of Gavin she sees, Emma is rapt at attention at all times. Morning breath or no.[break][break]

She steps with him into the taxi, smoothing her dress over long legs so as to not wrinkle it. Upon stepping out, the air is brisk and cold compared to the heat of bodies within. Even still, she appears nearly unfazed by the cold.[break][break]

"Drinks."[break][break]

There's a firmness in her tone, as if, perhaps, the idea of spending quality time in a slightly crowded room of people unnerved her. She didn't seem nervous, but perhaps she was.[break][break]

Emma follows the lights as they dance across his skin. They bathe him in an alluring glow and she doesn't hide the hunger in her gaze.

Emma is firm in her conviction, and Gavin offers no argument. He leads the way toward the bar, peruses the menu of drinks with names like mirage and hailstorm. There are hand-drawn pictures next to each cocktail but no description of what poison awaits. Like throwing a dart blindfolded, Gavin picks the first thing on which his gaze settles.[break][break]

"A Heat Wave and...?"[break][break]

Amber eyes find Emma's in the dim lighting of the club, a silent question.[break][break]

His drink is slid across the bar, coloured the deep red of blood and topped with some sort of berry. It has a spicy kick to it he's not expecting, burns a path down his throat not entirely unpleasant.[break][break]

"Want a sip?" he asks Emma. "It's hot."

Where Gavin settles on something called heat wave, she is eyeing the purple glass dutifully named mirage.[break][break]

So when he makes his decision aloud and asks for her choice, she offers a brief smile, forced social cues, in order to order her own drink.[break][break]

Glass on wood is such a relaxing sound as their drinks are passed to them. Emma is quiet in her regard of Gavin's taste test, silently bemused by his reaction and invitation.[break][break]

"As I would suspect with a name like heat wave."[break][break]

She does, however, thoroughly enjoy the sip. It burns all the way down and the taste is powerful. Her own drink is much lighter, much to her dislike.

Licking the remnants of spice from his lips, he scrutinizes whatever violet fancy swirls in Emma's glass. Its color is only amplified by the lights from the lounge, giving the drink a mystical aura.[break][break]

Curious, he asks, "Can I try yours?"[break][break]

She seems less satisfied with her own than she had been with his, and he wants to know why.[break][break]

In the background, the live band picks up a new song whose instrumentals swell and drown out the casual conversation of those nearby. With his gaze fixed on Emma, it's almost as if it's just the two of them there.

The desire to remove the spice herself rises but she refrains.[break][break] He gestures to her drink and she leans back to push it toward him with the tips of her fingers.[break][break] "Be my guest."[break][break] It's more than likely just not as strong as what she's used to, which automatically disqualifies it as a worthwhile drink. [break][break] The music in the background is nice, she finds herself admitting, and she feels herself relaxing in the moment. [break][break]

It's colder than he expects, some sort of chilled wine mixed with other flavours he hasn't the palette to identify. It's soothing in the aftermath of the spicier cocktail, and Gavin savours it.[break][break]

"Hm. Trade."[break][break]

She prefers the taste of his drink, and he's not as put off by hers, so it seems a fair deal. Leaning his weight against the bar, he finds himself tantalizingly close to Emma. Were they not out in public, or at very least if they were alone, he doesn't know that he could keep his hands off her.[break][break]

He doesn't even now, left hand caressing the curve of her hip. Unbothered by the presence of the bartender, of the other patrons, he leans in to press lips that taste of spice-and-honey against hers. She'll feel him smirk into the kiss, and he draws back with his nose brushing hers.[break][break]

"Thank you."

Emma finds her breath slows in his presence, eyes focused on the way his body leans toward hers. She doesn't try to hide the taunting smirk that graces her face, pulls her lip back.[break][break]

And when he caresses her hip she feels a breath escape her before her attention is captured entirely by his cold lips against hers. She can taste the spice of his drink that he had decided to trade with her. His affection is dizzying and bold.[break][break]

When he pulls away his smirk remains and she watches him with quiet awe. He thanks her and she smiles, reaching for the heat wave. She winks at him in response before taking a sip.

Every sound he draws from Emma's teasing lips is a victory in and of itself, capitalized upon by the kiss he places upon them.[break][break]

This, he thinks, is what he's been missing out on all these years. Not just any relationship or any girl, but Emma Wolfe and all her nuances. This must be what love feels like — but he's yet to say those words, conscious of their depth and the need to wait for the right moment.[break][break]

Instead, he asks, "Shall we dance?"[break][break]

He lifts the Mirage in a delicate grasp and downs the rest of it in one, setting the cocktail glass on the bar.

She watches him pull back, observe her, and she finds herself enjoying it, truly. He finishes his drink and she does as well, satisfied with the warm honey burn in the back of her throat. It leaves her warm in general, right down to her fingertips.[break][break]

"We shall."[break][break]

There's a note of humor in her voice as she turns to lower herself from her seat. Heels click against the ground and she turns to collect Gavin if he had not already collected her. The crystal beading at her back tickles her skin as she walks.[break][break]

Even now, under the scrutiny of watching eyes, she sees only him.

Deliberately, Gavin allows her to lead. He follows her with his eyes, their amber depths glinting with undisguised hunger as dappled violet light accents her bare skin. It catches on the beads, makes them glow.[break][break]

Fuck, was she beautiful.[break][break]

Pushing off from the bar that had supported him, Gavin ignores the twinge in his shoulder and follows her to the floor. It's crowded but not enough to be suffocating; there is enough room for them to find their place among others whose presence may as well have been lost on Gavin.[break][break]

His hand snakes around her waist, follows the curve of her hip and comes to rest low among beads that tickle his skin. He pulls her close with a different sort of intimacy — one not driven by blind lust but by something more akin to adoration.

The beads disguise the scars that pattern her back, a canvas that tells a story. The crystal glinting under the soft glow of the lounge is distracting, averting your attention from the sinister.[break][break]

He follows her, his hand entwined in hers. He lags behind to parse her figure, to enjoy her completely. When she turns to face him, she's overwhelmed by the intensity of his gaze, pulled in by the warmth of his hand. His skin brushes the skin of her back, the beads cold and trapped between his touch and her skin.[break][break]

And she feels as though she's aflame with equal intensity, drawn in by his attention and the closeness between them. Her hand finds his, falling into place as though they were practiced. [break][break]

"You're staring."[break][break]

Her voice is a whisper, drowned out by the steady beat of her heart and the feel of her figure balancing perfectly against his.

There is a stiffness to his movements as Gavin muscles his injured arm into position, but he voices no complaint. The subtle clench of his jaw and a flash of steel in his eyes gives him away, but it's worth it to thread his fingers through hers, draw her close with beat that rises through the floor. Perhaps she'll feel the way his arm spasms with the effort, the way his grip tightens around her fingers involuntarily before relaxing.[break][break]

"Of course I am. Who wouldn't stare at you?" His words are low, spoken close to her ear so that he won't have to raise his voice over the music. "You're beautiful."[break][break]

His nails drag across skin and scars to punctuate the words.

When his fingers tense between hers, the slightest twitch of her expression indicates concern. Her thumb brushes his in a subtle attempt at comfort. It's clear that this activity is bringing him pain and because of that she worries.[break][break]

But he leans in closer, the warm breath of his words whisper against her ear. It brings her involuntary goosebumps across her skin, catches her breath off guard. His nails pull at the skin of her back and her hand squeezes his in response.[break][break]

"How long have you believed that?"

Like the wolf for which she was named, she had a feral sort of beauty. Where some girls were adorned in make-up and jewels, Emma was crowned with scars. He feels their ridges and lines beneath his touch, maps them beneath his fingertips. Hers is the allure of a warrior.[break][break]

"If you're asking when it became more than simple appreciation..."[break][break]

His lips part with a slow breath as he considers it, slips back through snatches of memory.[break][break]

"Do you remember when you came home, after you got hurt?" They part for a moment with the swell of the music, reunite as it simmers low. "Then."
