Golisopod towers over even Gavin, the insect's heavy breathing loud as it looms in preparation of the event. It had been given very specific instructions — SWORDS DANCE to boost its attack, and then surge forth and smash as many targets as it could.[break][break]

Though at a disadvantage with only one arm at full strength, Gavin's determined not to let that slow him down.[break][break]

With a last glance exchanged to his teammates before the course begins, he approaches the first wooden board and gives it a good, hard whack.[break][break]

Emma's Ariados lingers in the Golispod's shadow. It's heavy breathing masks her chittering clanking of her teeth. She's anticipating attacking the course ahead. The obstacles are solid, but her spindly legs are stronger.[break][break]

In preparation, the arachid performs a SWORDS DANCE, boosting her attack by a decent margin. Emma glances to Gavin and his injured shoulder for a moment, a silent warning not to overdo it. A stupid event wasn't worth wrecking all of the progress he had made.[break][break]

Regardless, she would absolutely give this her all. The shot is fired to signal the start and she blasts through, fully prepared to kick ass alongside her Ariados.[break][break]

Simplicity will win this race.

Well, this wasn't a race per se, but Katherine's competitive nature translates practically anything into a contest. It mattered little to her whether if the others were willing participants or not. And much like his trainer, Poliwhirl was no different. Competition enticed him.

A touch at the center of his swirly belly produces a sharp sound, causing BELLY DRUM to come into effect. The water-type's attack is boosted to the highest threshold at the cost of his health, but it matters not.

"Just... Don't push yourself too far."

Poliwhirl nodded quickly before smashing the first obstacle with a punch, shattering the wooden board into tiny pieces.

"hm. interesting. bro, can you do that?"

slowbro can. a PSYCH UP brings his attack up to the same level as the poliwhirl without needing to sacrifice anything but a few seconds. dae claps with one hand; the other still holds the phone.

Much more fatigued than everyone else due to the prior BELLY DRUM, Poliwhirl begins to sweat not long after crashing the first obstacle. In a test of might: he could easily prove that he's the strongest. In a test of stamina, however... Not so much.

Regardless, despite his exhaustion, the water-type continues to punch one wooden board after another. When they finally reach an upgrade, it's a wall of concrete they have to face, and not another piece of hardwood.

"You can do it." One punch is enough to create cracks in the wall, "Again!" And a second is enough to break through it.

Lacking the raw, impressive power of Poliwhirl and Slowbro, Gavin's rise to strength alongside his Golisopod is slow and methodical.[break][break]

The armor-plated insect continues its ritualistic SWORDS DANCE as it moves further along the course beside its master, claws slashing through targets that Gavin couldn't hope to break. As it was, his hand hurt from even the simple wooden boards he'd whacked.[break][break]

In front of Emma, though, the proud Rocket refuses to show weakness. With a deep breath, he lifts his hand and strikes another board.[break][break]

Ariados is lacking sorely in the brute strength department. Emma has to come to the beast for backup and, as she takes down someone along the way, she acts as cover while the Ariados catches her breath and performs a second SWORDS DANCE.[break][break]

And, without further hesitation, Emma dives back into the fray, guns blazing. Her arms, I mean. Where'd she get the brass knuckles?[break][break]

[attr="class","dae i"]it's hard to simultaneously record and run this obstacle course but dae somehow manages. he follows the others and ushers slowbro to follow. there's no need to boost his already insane attack (which slowbro has barely used in his life), so dae points to the poliwhirl instead.

"give that cute girl's pokemon some health."

dae practically yells his order, unaware of his own volume. slowbro gently points at the poliwhirl and shoots a HEAL PULSE its way. dae smiles, waving at katherine as they continue through the obstacle course.

Gavin's momentarily distracted as he turns his head to see exactly who Dae's referring to. Realising it's Katherine and not Emma, the Rocket loses interest and rubs at his now-very-sore hand. He wasn't insecure, but he wasn't — well, he wasn't exactly sure where he and Emma stood when it came to exclusivity. That had never come up in their little talks.[break][break]

Shelving that for later, he turns to his Golisopod.[break][break]

"This is on you, pal, I'm fixing to break my damn hand."[break][break]

Golisopod clicks at him, which could mean any number of things really, and finishes off his SWORDS DANCE with an attempt at one of the hardest obstacles — solid rock.[break][break]

Gavin's Golisopod is excellent at tearing down obstacles, so much so that he -- wait. Did he just glance off of solid rock?[break][break]

Emma gives pause to stare at the man and glance back at the kid who had clearly been talking about Katherine. Emma was a woman, not a cute girl. She opts to continue giving Gavin a confused expression while her Ariados performs a final SWORDS DANCE to break through the solid rock herself.[break][break]

It sure felt like she had do everything herself around here.[break][break]

Fortunately, they are not alone.

Dae's Slowbro ensures that Poliwhirl can sustain the rest of the course, invigorating the water-type with the aid of a HEAL PULSE. It's like he didn't even hurt himself. No words of encouragement could match the power of this healing.

"My name is Katherine!" And not a cute girl, she almost yells back. Poliwhirl's pace is brought to normal now after the healing spread through his body, and he manages to break through another obstacle with just a single punch.

"Thanks though. I owe you one."

unfazed, dae returns an introduction over the sound of obstacles breaking. while the other seem to be putting a lot of effort into this obstacle course, dae and his slowbro are taking things easy. chill in their approach, slowbro crashes through an obstacle, breaking it in the process, before continuing on with their nice walk.

maybe the whole team could all go out for drinks after this. they all seem pretty nice, all things considered. they've yet to yell at him for possibly dragging the team down.

—and his claws scrape with a grating sound as they bounce right back off. Gavin blinks, disappointed. Emma's staring, too. He's not sure if she's equally let down by his armored beast or whether it has something to do with Dae and Katherine, but...[break][break]

"Well? Do it again."[break][break]

He instinctively goes to fold his arms, can't get his right arm into the correct position due to his shoulder injury, and settles for scowling at the Golisopod.[break][break]

They make eye contact but Emma breaks it to avoid putting him on the spot. She can see that he's irritated or embarrassed, and he orders his Golisopod to try again.[break][break]

In the meantime, Ariados seems to be most successful in breaking the softer barriers like wood and hard plastic or whatever. She lets the stronger, larger Pokemon handle the more difficult obstacles.[break][break]

Emma does the same. She's not trying to break a nail.[break][break]
