As he stood around the spa lobby waiting for Alethea Ivanova to arrive for their outing, Oscar had to admit that he was nervous. Oscar was still getting used to having friends and being generally pleasant, what if this 'date' scared her off? No need to worry Oscar, you're absolutely ready.
Oscar had picked a great location; there was an Alolan themed luau restaurant nearby, a casual location with exceptional reviews. The dishes and theme could provide conversation, since Oscar lived in Alola for a few years. This shall all go smoothly, and soon he'll have another asset in his arsenal.
Oscar checked his watch. About 5 'til. As the time approached Oscar's nerves peaked. It took all he had to keep appearing calm, the last thing he wanted was for Thea to come around and see him look like a wreck. He hoped she got there soon though, he wasn't sure for how long he could keep his cool.
Thea arrives with just a few minutes to spare. She seems just a little bit out of breath because she'd miscalculated how long it would take her to get to the restaurant from her hotel. Apparently getting a taxi was too much to ask around here.[break][break]
Just walk, they said. As if walking was something normal people did in this sort of heat.[break][break]
But she's otherwise still well put together when she shows, tucking and retucking a stubborn strand of hair behind her ear. The woman appears bright and lively, eager for their date, meeting, whatever you wanted to call it.[break][break]
And, as she nears, she finds and waves to Oscar immediately, a polite smile gracing her lips.[break][break]
Oscar's face brightened up as Thea approached. "There you are! Well look at you, your outfit is stunning! And please, you were barely late." Oscar immediately took the lead, walking toward the spa exit. As they began their walk to the restaurant, Oscar would attempt idle chitchat, "So, what's it like being a teacher?" Their journey would have many questions like this from both sides, small attempts to peek into their respective worlds before dinner.
They would soon arrive at their destination, and boy was it unique. Lavaridge was located at the foot at Mt. Chimney, and closer to the wall of the mountain stood a man-made tropical getaway. Surrounded by palm trees, this shack brought an authentic Alolan experience all the way to Hoenn. The two would enter, only to find that the entrance hid a large open air seating surrounding a wooden dance floor. Currently there was a show on the dance floor, fire dancers and their marowaks performing for a mildly busy dining room.
There was luckily no wait for a table, Oscar and Thea being lead to a booth on the north end of the dance floor. With menus in hand, Oscar decided to engage 'operation make a friend'. "I can't believe there's a place like this. Makes me nostalgic for home." It didn't really, Oscar fucking hated Alola but there was a certain charm to its cultural aesthetic. Plus their food was pretty good.
Not even prim and proper Thea can disguise the blush that burns her cheeks at his compliment. She tugs awkwardly at the simple shirt she's wearing, as if surprised he would even say such a thing. She does not, however protest, as that would be rude.[break][break]
Instead, she is happy to follow him out of the spa. Now that the sun was beginning to go down, so was the mugginess. It was cooler by a significant margin, a welcome sight for Lavaridge.[break][break]
"It's fulfilling. I get to shape their careers as they grow up."[break][break]
She smiles, offering a slight tilt of her head. But her attention is soon captured by the dancing and general upbeat atmosphere of the restaurant they had picked. Her eyes widen in surprise, enamored with the sights even while they are escorted to their table. When she looks back to Oscar, she's still smiling.[break][break]
"Are you from Alola?"[break][break]
Now that she thinks about it, she isn't sure she could have guessed that. Perhaps she had lived in Galar for too long, she used to be able to pick out anyone in a crowd in the bustling region of Unova. Tourism was popular there, people from all over the world visited. She ponders this thoughtfully, but in turn it looks more like she's staring at him.
Oscar leaned in eagerly, his conversation starter worked! He didn't hesitate to share, "Yeah, I was born in Alola! Raised in Kanto though, up until I was 19. Then I went back to Alola to leave at my brother's Seashore House. Lived there up until last year, then I moved here."
Oscar paused as a burst of flame attracted his attention. The fire dancers had started breathing fire, impressing the dinner guests surrounding the stage. Oscar waited for the clapping to die down before continuing, "It's alright. Way too humid, but there's a lot to explore."
Shortly after he ended that sentence, their waiter would arrive. He provided them a welcome before asking for their orders. Oscar had realized that he hadn't had a chance to look at the menu, though he already knew what he wanted. If the restaurant didn't have it, they couldn't call themselves Alolan. "Spam and hash please, and a margarita."
The waiter nodded and Oscar chuckled, he made his restaurant choice wisely. The waiter was about to turn to Thea, but Oscar waved for his attention once more. "Er um, what brand of spam do you use? Sorry I'm particular." The waiter was happy to explain, but Oscar didn't actually care. He just wanted to give Thea some time to look at the menu. Eventually the waiter finished his explanation and turned his attention to Thea.
[attr=class, bulk] Oscar leans in as she asks about his hometown, and she chuckles nervously, overwhelmed a bit by the sudden increase in attention - or perhaps the intensity of it.[break][break]
"A seashore house? That sounds so fancy, I might be envious."[break][break]
Imagine living by the water and listening to the waves crash every morning and night. Yeah -- that'd be the life, alright.[break][break]
"I just recently moved here as well! I'm from Unova originally, lived there with my family until I was around 16 or 17, then I hit the road and traveled to Galar to follow my passion for teaching. Never looked back. I've been relocated here for the forseeable future - not sure if it'll be permanent, but I'm enjoying what I've got."[break][break]
Her attention slides to the fire on the dance floor, her eyes widening with surprise and possible unease. Was that safe? What if it spread somehow to the tablecloths? She exhales quickly as Oscar continues speaking, and only then does she realize that the waiter is asking for her order. She blushes, reclining in her seat and quickly deciding to just copy what her date has ordered.[break][break]
"Same thing for me, please," and to Oscar, directly, she smiles: "I've never had that, I'm intrigued."[break][break]
She is, however, thankful for Oscar's attempt to stall the waiter and make her hesitation and absent-mindedness less embarrassing. What a sweetheart.[break][break]
Oscar gave Thea a grin as she made her order. "Great choice." He noted as the waiter walked away. "Normally Spam is disgusting but Alolans have mastered its culinary secrets. If this place is as authentic as it claims, they'll have done the same."
Oscar breathed in deeply, surprised at how at ease he felt. So far this had been much more relaxing that anticipated, although the hardest part had yet to come. He now had to maintain her attention and keep conversation topics flowing, lest she become bored and hate him forever. That is what happens right?
Their drinks came rather swiftly, and Oscar did not hesitate to take a sip of his margarita. It was good, a tad strong but rather tasty. He looked to Thea as he set his glass down, preparing to give her his next conversation topic. She had best be prepared.
"So what do you teach exactly Thea? I assume it has something to do with training pokemon, but like what's your specialty."
[attr=class, bulk] Thea winks in response to the man's praise, a small smile spreading across her lips. Her attention remains on him as he explains Spam and the brief history of it. [break][break]
"Then I suppose I will leave Spam to the experts."[break][break]
And now her interest is absolutely piqued by the true Schrodinger's Spam. Would this place deliver high-quality dishes that Oscar was expecting? Or would it totally suck?[break][break]
By the smell of the plates of delicious-looking food passing their table, weaving in and out, and the smiling faces of the recipients.. she had a good feeling this restaurant was the real deal. [break][break]
Drinks are the first to arrive, and Thea nods gently with a whispered thank-you before taking a sip. The moment she sets it down, however, Oscar draws her attention back to him in the form of a pointed question. She smiles, genuinely surprised and elated that he even asked. [break][break]
"Well.. I teach a broad scope of topics, honestly -- mostly the basics. They're just kids, so the majority of my time is honestly spent with real-world skills teaching. Reading, writing, that sort of thing. But I teach at a Pokemon Battle Academy, so my specialty is offensive battle strategizing."[break][break]
