Skyler chuckles, fingers absentmindedly fiddling with her colorful beaded necklace. "I'm just a simple sailor. I'm afraid I can't do much. I just help when I can." Although the young woman is quick to throw herself at the waves and take (sometimes) avoidable risks, the thought of being able to influence big events in the region actually makes her sweat nervously. Thanks, but no thanks. She's happy to be an anonymous face in the crowd as long as her freedom isn't on the line.

That doesn't mean that she won't help. It just means that she'll run as soon as she's done helping.

"But I agree that we have to stay optimistic, or else how would we live our lives, eh? Better to beat the darkness back than to cower before it."

There's a flash by Skyler's side and she snaps her head in time to see Sirena hit yet another innocent Swablu with an ICE BEAM, making it fall. "Shit, Sirena!" In a last ditch attempt to save the Swablu from drowning, Skyler throws a pokéball at it - and to add insult to injury, she falls back on her bottom with the movement. "I think I'm growing a collection," she says, slightly dazed and getting to her previous position.

Still a bit breathless from that sudden shot of adrenaline, Skyler pops her shoulders. "I can only imagine the stories you've collected," she thought Alexander looked... weighted? Was that the word? Like he carried a huge weight on his shoulders. Skyler was awful at reading people, so she could be wrong. "But I bet none of them mix glitter, underwear and champagne, so I think I win."

At Alexander's question, Skyler's face immediately darkens, her naturally cheerful disposition gone in a second. "You could say that." She's strangely curt for someone who's seemingly proficient at filling the silence with the sound of her voice. She doesn't like to appear anything other than cheerful (she hates to be asked 'are you okay?).

Yet, the sigh that escapes her is heavy with meaning, but it is only after a few seconds of silence that she finally answers. "Being a diver carries some risks, but I think pokémon have been behaving oddly. More aggressively. Not only that, but there have been..." Skyler hesitates, knowing that what's about to escape her mouth will sound bizarre. "...strange rumblings just off the coast. And I have seen flashes in the distance, out on the sea, like lightning. But no storm. It's... strange." And downright scary at times.

Then there are the pirates, but those don't worry her as much. They can be a danger if left unchecked, but she knows that the league is taking steps to control that situation. "The pirates are a bother, but one I can deal with." Things seem somewhat calmer on that front anyway.

When a Mudkip swims past, she's quick to gesture for Sirena to send an ICE BEAM at it before Skyler sends a pokéball to capture it. She's always wanted one of those.

[attr="class","stone i"]there is a change in skyler's demeanor that does not go unnoticed. alexander turns, giving her more of his attention as he listens.

"i believe hnn reported something similar recently. it really is strange." the cause of these phenomena continue to allude him. "but i'm sure we'll be fine. we are more prepared now, after all."

the mention of pirates has him tensing a little. "it should not be on you to deal with them in the first place, so i apologize. but we are aware of the issue. i'm currently working on rectifying it." the problem should be elimnated soon, if all goes to plan. even so, he doesn't make promises he can't keep.

Skyler keeps silent as Alexander speaks, her mind wandering to the disturbances she'd been witness to in the last few weeks. She has a gut feeling that something is coming, like looking at a blue sky and seeing the distant dark clouds growing on the horizon. It seems to Skyler like Hoenn is holding its breath, waiting for... she doesn't know what.

Then again, it could've been nothing. Maybe she was just growing paranoid.

When a Corphish swims past, Skyler lazily sends a pokéball its way. Sirena cries out at being denied another target practice, but Skyler is quick to remind her that there are lots of water pokemons around for her to try and freeze.

She can't help but think that Alexander's sentences sound practised, the way he carefully arranges the words. Skyler supposes that being out on the public eye makes you conscious of the way you say things. "They've been calmer lately," she shrugs, thinking of sunken ships and thieves. "At least as far as I can tell. I helped the rangers out on a few pirate-related missions."

Skyler suddenly grinned, the aura of cheerfulness slowly trickling back. "I got them good too. Psychic is really useful, y'know?"

The young sailor looks to the sky, feeling a shiver run up her spine at Alexander's words. There is something not quite right going on in Hoenn, but Skyler knows that as long as there are people here to defend it, everything is going to be okay. She's going to be one of those people, after all.

She's barely aware when a shadow falls over them, thinking it a cloud. Sirena, however, is more attentive and shoots an ice beam at whatever's flying over their heads. It disappears into the pokéball Skyler throws its way.

This little conversation with Alexander has also served to lift her spirits somewhat. The urgency and anxiety she'd first felt upon arriving has all but drifted away. It is good to be reminded why she'd fallen in love with the ocean in the first place - and why she shouldn't shy when it showed its teeth.

"Thank you, Alex." It would be a bit out of the blue, at least from his perspective. "I think I might have to go back now though." Her eyes gleam with good cheer and she raises an arm for a fist-bump. "I'll see you around, yeah? Keep training those dives."
