As he approaches the rendezvous point and recognizes his ranging partner, there's a beat before Orion says anything. He hasn't forgotten the terms they'd parted on, the ass he'd made of himself in his anger.[break][break]

Since then, she's stuck it out with the rangers.[break][break]

"I heard your Mudkip evolved." Is it his attempt to break the ice? Who knows. His tone lacks the tension and disgust it had possessed during their last interaction. "You bring him along for this?"[break][break]

Orion's got his Swampert, though it remains in its pokeball. Out of its ball is a Kubfu that sits on Orion's shoulders like a little kid. It grins at Iris, blissfully unaware of the awkward history between them.

[attr="class","irisThread"]the pieces click once she gets sight of her face--the name she'd gotten had inspired some unplaced familiarity already. iris' mouth settles into a not-quite frown as she stands up straighter. orion lykos is someone she has to impress.

"yes," she answers curtly. without another word, her hand goes to her pocket to retrieve blue's pokeball. the marshtomp appears in a flash of red; the pokemon does a little spin to take a look at its surroundings, apparently confused by its trainer's silence. it stops facing iris, peering up curiously.

then, iris simply waits. for orion's critique of her pokemon, or her treatment of it, or even just his next command. as her hands clasp behind her back, she prays for him to fill the silence soon.

Orion doesn't miss the subtle shift in posture. He does, however, misinterpret — it's as if she's squaring off against him, hostile in light of their last encounter. Secretly, he doesn't blame her.[break][break]

Shame burns at the back of his neck, a memory he'd rather forget. If she'd reported him to Lars, he hadn't heard about it.[break][break]

Do better.[break][break]

Her Mudkip — Marshtomp, now — looks in better condition than the cynical Orion of the past would have expected.[break][break]

"He looks healthy. Blue, right?"[break][break]

He's good with names, but that's not the reason he remembers. He remembers because his brain plays his failures on repeat, like there's only so much film storage in his brain and there's nothing left but to rewind the classics.[break][break]

Orion starts walking.[break][break]

"They keep you briefed about this case?"[break][break]

It's an ugly one: torture, mutilation, Pokemon trafficking. He wonders if those involved have any connection to Iris, if that's why she's been put on the case — but this time, he has the sense to hold his tongue.

history aside, the two rangers make for an unfortunate pair. both seem equally unaware when it comes to social cues. iris makes her own assumptions regarding his question--orion probably fears she will relapse into old habits. she isn't unfamiliar to scenes such as these.

"you have nothing to worry about, mister lykos." there's no bite behind her voice, just dull resignation. iris knows how to keep herself in check.

Iris is succinct in her response. It could be her personality, but Orion's own anxieties convince him that he is the cause. His stomach squirms. Those fears are compounded with her next statement: it lacks the fire she'd possessed during their first spat.[break][break]

"Look—" The words are out before he can stop himself. "I know I was a bit of an ass to you before..."[break][break]

A bit. Underselling it. He'd been outraged by the reports he'd heard from others, but he'd heard nothing of the like since she'd been placed with the Rangers. People could change. Maybe she had. Maybe she had gotten good at hiding it. Either way, Orion should have been professional no matter how inflamed he'd been.[break][break]

"It was out of line. I'm not gonna jump down your throat like that again."[break][break]

They're coming up on the seashore house in which the scientists were said to operate. Orion's fingers curl around his Swampert's pokeball as he peers through one of the grimy windows and tries to see if anyone's home.

It's a weight off his shoulders; they slump slightly in relief before the tension returns to his posture from the gravity of the situation rather than his own awkward shortcomings.[break][break]

"Well, I'm hoping no one's home, but if they are... priority is on rescuing the Pokemon." They were rangers, not cops. "I brought my Gengar to induce drowsiness, make our jobs a little easier, but that doesn't always work out."[break][break]

That was why his Swampert lurks in the background, ready to intervene if things go awry.[break][break]

"Any ideas?" he wonders, frowning as he catches a glimpse of movement inside. "Shit, no luck on it being empty..."

[attr="class","irisThread"]before she can respond, the door bursts open. iris jumps out of the way of a HYDRO PUMP, breaking into a roll. pushing herself upright, she shouts a command to blue. "protect!"

taking the defensive stance feels unnatural to her, but orion's presence forces her to fall back on the ranger's teachings. despite his apology, she can't help but feel he'll react badly if she followed her instincts with how to deal with the threat.

The HYDRO PUMP blasts along the beach and leaves a dark line in the sand. Iris reacts faster than even Orion, who follows with a sharp bark of: "Guard! Gengar, neutralize!"[break][break]

The air shimmers with Swampert's WIDE GUARD as the purple amphibian leaps to Blue's side. Gengar cackles as it phases through the wall of the dilapidated building and sets a HYPNOSIS against the scientists within.[break][break]

Expecting no further movement, Orion is alarmed when the door once again bursts open to reveal a Pokemon — frantic, weak, clearly abused — that makes a beeline for the surrounding wilds. It would seem the scientists didn't have as good a hold on their quarry as the Rangers had thought.
