Her fifth gym.

With this came expectations. Expectations from the people she worked with and for, expectations from those who've heard about her endeavor to collect all of Hoenn's eight badges. It's not that anyone encouraged her to try to pursue this, but... These badges served as stamps of approval in her mind.

Her track record is clean. Not a single loss at this time. And she has no plan for it to change today.

Naturally, confidence oozes from her when she enters the gym. Kat hadn't won her fight quite yet nor did she own the place, but she damn well walked as if that was the case. "Hey, I am here for my gym battle. I think it was scheduled for..." Her eyes peer around, searching for a clock. "About five minutes ago." She didn't even realize she was running late until now.

The receptionist seemed to mutter something under her breath before rising from her seat to lead Katherine into the arena, where she was simply told to 'wait for him to show up'. Frankly, she would have argued that it was rude if it wasn't for the fact that she was also late for her challenge.

This time, he was outside speaking with all of the Flying and not-so-Flying types he took care of. He was in the middle of letting them perch and ruffle and mess with his hair, completely unaware that there was a—

“She’s here,” came the voice of his receptionist in his ear, startling him for a few moments. The sudden gesture caused the rest of the younger Flying-types to fly away from his arms, shocked at the sudden movement. Wondering what the receptionist meant, he then looked over at the opposite side of the arena and saw that he was no longer alone!

“Ah, sorry about that!” he called out with a sheepish expression as he scratched the back of his head. “Was it singles or a doubles battle you wanted?” he inquired a few moments later. Looking behind him, he saw that Gabriel had yawned, finally waking up from that nice nap he took.

“Just wait there for a bit,” he said to the Salamence before he turned to face her again.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name,” he apologized.

Katherine's eyes meet with the gym leader's for only a couple of moments before she watches the flock of flying-types lifting away, leaving a lone Salamence to stand in the arena along with Alexei. "Oh— I am sorry. My name is Katherine. Fairburne, in case you're curious." It was unlikely for her last name to be recognized. Save for a local, successful bakery that her adoptive mother ran in Sootopolis City, their family was not very known.

A Pokeball is snatched from her belt, and the button at its center is pressed in order for a Sableye to escape outside. The ghost-type's diamond eyes sparkle lightly when a stray ray of the sun hits them.

"And this is Amethyst."

At the sight of the Sableye, Alexei flinched internally for a few moments. The look on his features paled somewhat, before the Salamence shuffled forward and stretched his wings before taking off to fly in the air above them,a welcome distraction.

Calm down, calm down, it’s not going to hurt you directly, he thought frantically before clearing his throat slightly.

“Careful out there, Gabe,” he said to the Salamence, who let out a snort at his words. “Don’t get too cocky, now,” he added before looking across the arena.

“First move’s yours, Miss Katherine,” he remarked, wondering what was going to come blasting out of the gate. Knowing that it was a Sableye, he had to prepare himself for the worst, considering that he had one himself but didn’t know what kind of moves that this one he was now facing down packed.

The courtesy is appreciated, and she knows better than to waste it. Her Sableye holds the same stance, of course, intent on capitalizing on this advantage. The PRANKSTER nature of the pokemon shows itself in the gleam in her eyes, her fierce spirit revealing itself momentarily. The ghost-type strikes a pose with her paws up before a blue, ghastly fire erupts in the air - splitting into many orbs that are shot at the flying Salamence.

They intend to home after the dragon-type and hopefully, if they manage to catch on, also inflict a BURN on the pokemon.

Right off the bat it’s a status move—why was he not surprised at this development?

Hoping that the Salamence’s Intimidate kicked in, the draconid blinked a few moments before outright using the Protect defensive move. It may have been a cheesy tactic, but at least he hoped it would offer some assurance that the flames from the incoming Will-O-Wisp wouldn’t hit.

Of course Alexei didn’t know how the dynamics of Prankster worked, seeing as he didn’t really dabble into Ghost-types unless it was absolutely necessary. The Salamence then moved to fly up higher—even if it made him more vulnerable, at least he could aim better as compared to flying so close to the ground and being a gigantic neon sign.

He had to move like a ninja—like Janine, if you may. Whoever that ninja was, really.

Salamence’s Intimidate takes effect! Salamence used Protect!

Luckily, Katherine's Sableye was not known for her physical attack. The INTIMIDATE does cause the ghost-type to flinch momentarily, but nothing beyond that. Their focus is maintained and the flames continue to travel and obey to the will of the pokemon, trailing after the Salamence.

The protective barrier that erects around the Salamence ensures that the fire is kept at bay, but it only promotes Amethyst to conjure more of the same ghastly flames to shoot at the dragon-type. Repetition might be boring, but it was certainly effective.

He knew that the Protect strategy was going to work only once, not twice—and well it was going to put him in a bit of a bind. He had to avoid getting hit at all costs, and the incoming flames only meant one thing—he had to go high.

“Up!” he called from the ground, and the Salamence quickly took to the skies by propelling himself higher with Fly, until he became nothing but a speck that had soared well out of range.

Well, that was part one of the plan. The second one would involve him getting close and attempting to hit the Sableye before soaring in for the second half of Fly. Should it hit or not, the Salamence then screwed his face up in a hideous moue as he used Scary Face the moment he came in close enough.

He had to take the hit at some point and this was going to be it…

Salamence used Fly to avoid the Will-o-wisp, before coming down and using Scary Face to attempt to scare the Sableye before flying back to its former position!

The second WILL O WISP misses too. Still, it fails concern or worry to the woman or her partner in crime. Patience was the name of the game, a virtue. The inconvenience of waiting won't turn them rash.

And soon enough, their patience is rewarded. The Salamence dives from the skies down towards the ghost-type, who seems to be waiting still. There isn't an attempt at moving or blocking the attack, but instead, Amethyst waits long enough before breathing more fire into life.

The FLY attack lands true, knocking the Sableye away a little, but not before flames dance upon the dragon's body and cling to his wings. With this exchange of blows, the battle truly began.

There's the SCARY FACE as well, and it ensures that the ghost-type remains slowed, forcing it to remain stationary for the rest of the battle. Fortunately, this means little in the grand scheme of things, or at least so they choose to believe. After all, Amethyst was not particularly agile. It'd be a waste of time to try and dodge one of the dragon's attacks.

His wings were on fire. Gabriel’s wings were on fire!

The Salamence let out a roar of surprise as he frantically tried to flap his wings and put out the flames—while it was effective on the most part, there were persistent flames still stuck there, continuously licking at the skin and causing him discomfort.

That was a bad sign…

“Hold on!” he called from his side of the field, before the Salamence got an idea to try and give the Sableye a taste of the flames he’d been subject to. Taking a deep breath, the Salamence then followed the Sableye with its eyes, pondering where it was going to go next—

Before releasing a powerful stream of flames in the direction it may be headed, a Flamethrower attempt to scorch the Sableye in flames.

If Loki was around to see this, Alexei was sure his own Sableye wasn’t going to stand for the insanity that was being subject to its fellow Sableye. But then again, he didn’t know where his Sableye was currently lurking. Hiding in his shadows, maybe?

“Steady!” he added a few moments later, watching as the Salamence came to a gliding stop in mid-air, discomfort spreading across his features as the flames continued to scorch him and prevent him from flying without impediment.

Salamence is burned! Keeping an eye on where the Sableye may be going, a Flamethrower is thrown out to catch it off-guard!

Finally.

Katherine thinks to herself at the sight of the flaming wings, taking pride in her Sableye’s successful WILL O WISP. The BURNING flames are sure to put a timer on their battle and slowly drain Salamence of its health - which happened to be what she was counting on.

“Hold steady as well, Amethyst. Brace yourself.”

The gem-ghoul tanks the FLAMETHROWER head-on, not even inching away to dodge it. The full brunt of the attack is felt by the ghost-type, who converts the damage that’s inflicted on her into a magical, silver-colored sphere of energy.

It is sent through the stream of fire - intent on striking Salamence with its own force. After all, METAL BURST merely took the damage inflicted upon one pokemon and increased it in return.

At that moment, the mistake becomes clear—with the sudden burst of dragon-fire that comes screaming back at the Salamence. Wait, wait a second—

Alexei’s mind goes into overdrive as he wonders what had happened—could Sableye learn Flamethrower? Quickly consulting his PokéGear to make sure his eyes weren’t deceiving him, Will-O-Wisp was one of the three—the other two were Sunny Day and Fire Punch.

Then, this meant that whatever was headed back their way was either a Mirror Coat, or—

He had a few moments to react, however at the moment he didn’t have a distance move powerful enough to shank the Sableye from afar—considering that he had to go up close and personal just to land a hit, he knew he had to bite the bullet once more.

“Forward!” he called out, and despite the Salamence’s discomfort at its own attack shrouding him in flames, he pressed on, braving the fire—

Flying in close for a Dragon Claw attack. Well, wasn’t that dandy?

Salamence is burned! Salamence tanks the Flamethrower and flies in close for a Dragon Claw attempt!

The spiderweb has been weaved, and Sableye only has to wait for its prey to be caught by it.

Judging by Alexei’s order? It’s only a matter of moments before it happens. After all, Salamence’s advantage was the distance it could keep between itself and Katherine’s ghost - but now?

It’s right where they need it to be.

Almost at reach, almost close enough—

“Amethyst! Now!”

Light engulfs the gem-ghoul as soon as Salamence’s claw begins to glow with color, brilliant shades of violet blending into one another in order to allow the mega-evolution to come into effect.

“You already know what to do.”

She does, and it’s exactly why she utilizes her gem to shield against the dragon-type attack; all while breathing an ICY WIND to slow down the dragon and damage it. Unfortunately, the ice-type attack targets both of its weaknesses.

This is it. This is the opening they’ve been waiting for.

notes: sableye defends against the claw with its shield and uses ICY WIND. icy wind inflicts -1 speed if it hits.

He was determined to bring down the little bugger at all costs, no matter if it—

For a few moments the Salamence was blinded by the sudden burst of light from the Sableye, and a few moments later it had—transformed.

And it would be in those few moments Alexei would realize that he needed to change things around a bit. Taking a few notes here and there to save for later, he was already considering how to improve what moves Gabriel knew. That’s for next time, he thought to himself, filing away the little changes he would have to take note of once the Salamence flew in too close—

And was repelled by a sudden blast of cold wind. Ah, shit.

“Back!” he called out—but at this point, the wings on fire had actually frozen over, the flames put out by a sudden quelling of the heat to be replaced by a frigid feeling that numbed up his wings. “As best as you can!” and with that the Salamence forced himself away with another Flamethrower, although with that large-ass shield the Sableye was hiding behind, he didn’t know what else it was capable of.

He didn’t want to reveal his hand too early, but maybe next time…

As the Salamence made its way back, he reached out for it as it flew closer and patted the underside of its jaw.

“You did great out there. We’ll get ‘em next time.”

Once the Salamence had flown out of the arena, another shape came down from the sky, this time it was the ‘fat flying fairy’ (as it was jokingly called), his Togekiss.

“Hope you don’t mind,” he called out as the Togekiss took to the stage and began to fling off an Ancient Power attack in the Sableye’s direction.

Salamence is burned! Gets caught off-guard by the Icy Wind, uses Flamethrower to propel himself back before being ‘recalled’ out of the field.

Togekiss now on the field, uses Ancient Power!
