Knowing that throwing any kind of attack like Flamethrower was going to be detrimental to the Togekiss’s health, he knew that something had to be done. Seeing as the ‘up close and personal’ strategy had failed him, well, he had to be careful.

Who knew for how much longer the Sableye in front of him would hold out?

That Metal Burst caught me off-guard, so what do I do now? I hate being backed into a corner! Think, Alexei, think! He thought, his thoughts a panicking hot mess. On the outside, though, it looked like he was waiting to plan for the next move.

Take a risk, take a chance, just go, do it! He continued to chastise himself mentally, before nodding quietly. “Let’s risk it.”

“Metronome.”

He crossed his fingers and hoped for the best; who knew what the hell was coming out of the attack. While the Power Gem battered the Togekiss head-on (and he heard the resulting cry of pain) he hoped that this crazy-ass, shit-brained strategy of his was going to work!

It looked like nothing was going to happen, however a few moments later, Alexei heard the sound of rumbling water coming from… somewhere.

Oh, shit! He thought as the Metronome had resulted in an encompassing Surf tidal wave that seemingly rose out from the ground, undulating currents sweeping across the battlefield and headed towards the Sableye!

Togekiss takes the Power Gem attack!

The Togekiss’s widespread attack will be met by the same kind, for it’s best to cover as much area as possible in a scenario such as this.

With a gesture offered for the gem-ghoul, its lips already part to allow a frozen breeze to billow forth. The ICY WIND, just as before, carries not only the intention to hurt Alexei’s pokemon but also to slow it down. This was a fight where simply attacking won’t do. For as long as the threat of the Togekiss remains, Sableye’s task is to ensure that it’ll be left slowed down by the time Katherine’s second pokemon is sent out.

The SURF reaches the ghost-type just in time to be split by its shield as if it hit a wave breaker.

Some of the attack’s damage is mitigated, but not enough. Sableye collapses soon afterward and a second Pokeball is retrieved, allowing for the gym leader’s Noivern to emerge on the battlefield.

A flying-type, at long last.

“It shouldn’t be too difficult for you, love.“

notes: Sableye uses ICY WIND (-1 speed) and tanks the SURF. Sableye is KOed! Noivern is sent out!

At the sight of the Noivern, his eyebrows went up ever so slightly—aha.

Reminds me of Fen, but—there’s something else about this one… he thought, watching as the Sableye was finally recalled. The hairs on the back of his neck finally calmed down, and he didn’t realize he was trying not to hyperventilate until he heard his own breath coming out in short, hissing gasps.

Shit. Okay, calm down! He continued to himself, taking a deep breath and turning his attention on the Noivern. So much like Fenrir, but not similar in so many ways.

“Strike it!”

With that the Togekiss let out another trilling cry, before summoning a miniature storm of rocks—not quite a rock Slide, but an Ancient Power attack—before attempting to send it at the Noivern.

Much as he wanted to let rip with the singular Fairy-type attack the Togekiss knew, he was saving that—for an opportune time.

Each rock pelts the Noivern’s skin lightly, causing bruises here and there. A yelp escapes from the flying-type as it continues to push through, to move onwards, to close the distance between Togekiss and itself. It wants to be close, it seeks its prey with the utmost urgency it can muster.

The beast’s wings glow with a silver, spectral hue, offering a shallow layer of protection against the rock-type attack just before the sound wave pokemon reaches its target.

It attempts to lunge at the Togekiss, only to drive its attack home.

notes: Noivern uses STEEL WING and tanks the ANCIENT POWER.

Keeping her distance was a good idea—however the sheen of what Alexei guessed was shining ‘metal’ from the incoming Noivern’s wings was what tipped him off.

It’s time to do it, he thought grimly, before he heard the Togekiss let out a surprised bleating noise.

“Steady—steady—hold the line,” he said, more to himself as his Pokémon watched the hurtling, incoming approach of the Noivern.

As soon as the other Pokémon was close enough, he dropped the command.

“Blind it!”

By that it was only one attack—the very last one he was saving for this moment. As the Noivern careened dangerously close to strike the Togekiss with its Steel Wing, a sudden burst of light emanated from the point of contact.

It was a bright, blinding Dazzling Gleam.

While Alexei knew it was definitely an advantage on the Noivern, the Steel Wing also had an advantage on his Togekiss. Now the question was, who would come out of the flash still standing—

Togekiss used Dazzling Gleam!

Blind it.

Oh— Alexei chose that, then. It was a tactic Katherine saw herself using under the right circumstances, but they were no longer present on this battlefield. She’d expected the gym leader to know that, considering his familiarity with flying types.

After all, Noivern’s unique features allowed it to navigate through the darkness without deterrence. Ultrasonic waves pulse from its ears, shooting far and wide to collect information about what the blinding DAZZLING GLEAM stole from it.

The damage it suffers is not negligible anymore, but it pushes onwards all the same. It has an objective to fulfill, after all.

Katherine doesn’t issue another command, nor does she repeat her previous one. Her pokemon executes the STEEL WING, impacting the Togekiss with as much force as it can muster.

The flash then begins to fade and dim away slowly...
