Anyone else might get hexed on the spot, but him? She'd literally grown knowing him. Could she really say anything back?

"Maybe later, when it's nursery time, you can feed me some bourbon as well," she challenges his teasing. If it doesn't shut him up for a moment, at least it could throw him off his game. The one allegedly building up.

Her next throw is similar to her first: skilled precision taking on a mantle of chance. And then there's another, and another. She's lost count, and perhaps suggesting scotch hadn't been such a brilliant idea because her mantine's body looks blurry. She can't keep going.

The tumblers are moved from the mantine's back to the edge of the pool at some point. Erin can't seem to remember it as she slides up and on top of the water pokémon, back to back and eyes facing up. She pats the spot next to her. The mantine is large, even for a fully grown specimen.

"Time sure flies. It feels like only yesterday that he fell off and got into a brawl with Koch and his twin brother. Things got real when the cousin showed up." She pauses, mind lost in a mist of thoughts. "How did we end up so messed up?" she asks in a brief moment of clarity.

maddonis had not done terribly, but being a lean man, the alcohol had certainly taken hold. he drank daily, at this point—but not like he had when he was years younger, when they’d had their parties. that was a different level, with the body of a child that seemed to keep moving throughout the night no matter what substance he’d dropped down the gullet.

he pulled himself onto the mantine beside her, back plopping down. his blonde hair escaped his scrunchie some, mingling with hers as they laid with skulls nearly touching.

his laugh was uninhibited. it felt nice, to have that feeling of a heavy wall falling into weightless smoke. it was one that he so often kept up for business, for rocket, for his own ego, even. it was exhausting.

before he could respond, her words brought a small shadow over his gleaming mood. his laughter faded, grin softening to a smile that was determined to stay on his lips. “we trade our sanity for money. it’s in our blood, isn’t it?” he said, his words more stream of consciousness than anything else, while there was certainly something to them. he chuckled and sighed. “i’d rather have designer shoes, anyways.”

Her laughter is given out freely at this state of drunkenness, but she hears every word loud and clear, as if put through a loudspeaker. "Couldn't imagine life without them," she agrees, but there's so much more to it that it physically hurts to think about. "Or without some Glosse earrings to match," she adds cheekily. The back of her hand is placed over her eyes, shielding them from the lowering sun and maybe even from the headache of thinking too much.

Erin turns her head ever so slightly. Just enough to catch a glimpse of the man's profile. "Thanks for indulging me. I had fun." The words are muttered before she can subject them to a second thought. The scotch pong had been a crazy idea. It's not even sunset yet. Right in that moment, though, the only sour taste on her tongue comes from the bite of the whiskey. There's a small smile on her lips that she doesn't realize is there.

"We should get some water," comes as an afterthought moments later. Yet she does nothing to move away, reluctant to leave and return to her daily life.

he smiled with pride. they did do some fine work. his drunken voice purred, slurring in a way that was still somehow sophisticated and smooth. “we have a new collection coming out soon. i’ll have to snag you a pair.” he could be a generous man, when he felt like it. not to mention, a pretty face was the best advertisement.

maddonis turned his head as well to her, not yet sitting up. in his loosened state, he dared to take a small lock of her hair and run it through two fingers, idly feeling the softness of it, in his own gesture of familiarity. “it was fun. maybe not scotch next time.” he laughed, and silently hoped there would be a next time. he decidedly enjoyed adult erin’s company.

“agreed.” sliding off the mantine, he proceeded to wade through the water and pushed himself up the ledge of the pool. sliding off his halfway fallen out scrunchie, he shook his partially dampened blonde hair and then went for a towel.

She's a little too excited at the offer. "Really? I'd truly be honored." Erin has never been all that fond of superfluous parties, an unfortunate side-effect of having grown in rich circles, but her solo ventures in Hoenn have changed the way she sees them. They're a necessary evil for her professional growth. Admittedly, having gorgeous jewels or shoes to show off in those parties is one of her silent comforts.

The gesture catches her off-guard, and a tinge of color rushes to cheeks already flushed from alcohol. "Fine. You can pick next time," she answers with a small pout. Directed either at his quip or at him as an entirety? She attempts only half-heartedly to superpose the underlying promise.

Even after he's gone, Erin remains on her spot on top of her mantine for another minute or two. It's only once she remembers her porygon2 is still floating around near the pool, by literally catching a glimpse of it, that she forces herself up and out of the water.
