Gavin can't blame him. Emma, Gavin, Marcel... this isn't the Rocket any of them had asked for. Cadis had brought a promise of sanctuary, and the illness had ripped it away from them all. Gavin takes the pack of cigarettes with guilt like lead in his gut.[break][break]

He's supposed to have quit. Marcel doesn't know.[break][break]

It's sweet relief between his lips, a cough bubbling in his throat from the harsh impact of the nicotine. His hand shakes for a moment, then stills, eyes closed against an internal struggle. The cigarette helps. It helps, and he loathes it for that. He keeps smoking it.[break][break]

"Which part?" he asks, exhaling slow. Smoke wreathes around him. Then, "No."

His gift was not unwelcome — far from it — but the thought that Dominic had been chosen, by their new boss as well as Darkrai, and he hadn't heard a whisper of it—[break][break]

The question catches him off guard, surprises him. His brow furrows.[break][break]

"Of course I am." It was something that set him apart from others, made him worthy, made him irreplaceable among the ranks. Security. On top of all that: "It's a shadow Pokemon. A shadow legendary."[break][break]

He feels awful for the creatures suffering in their corruption, but such are the sacrifices of science. The reason he allies with Rocket, rather than the brightest minds of the League.[break][break]

He had a bond with the first Sandslash, one of the pair that hadn't made it. He hadn't made the same mistake again.

The question is a slap across the face, and Gavin's demeanour shifts into something colder. He stubs the cigarette on the seat beside him, stands up and shifts his glare upon one of his oldest friends.[break][break]

"Do you think I can't?"[break][break]

There is no threat in the way he says it, only icy demand. The beast ball is heavy in his grasp, carrying the weight of what Lugia must've been subjected to. He throws it high in the air and it bursts into consuming shadow, dark wings blocking the light.[break][break]

It exudes hatred, aggression, but it does not attack. Its red-eyed glare is enough to make even Gavin feel small.[break][break]

"Who else would you see with it?" he demands, as Lugia's wingbeats ruffle their hair. "Dominic? Declan? Yourself?"

Was that truly how Marcel looked at this? Gavin frowns at him, disappointed. He'd have thought his friend knew him better than that.

Marcel stands up, and for a wild moment Gavin wonders at his intentions before the other steps back. Is he scared? If so, of who: the Lugia, or of Gavin?[break][break]

He returns it without a fight, red light swallowing shadow and returning the harsh artificial glow.[break][break]

"I'd hoped you had more faith in me."[break][break]

Anger fades to resignation. Why was it always the ones he cared for that doubted him most?
