Another failed magikarp splash attempt later brought the colonel to his girlfriend's feet once again, his face down on the water, numerous bubbles popping around him.

He rolled onto his back, spitting salt water.

"Alrighty, no more mr. funny man." He declared, snapping his fingers at his Mantine as if to call it.

It continued to do lazy wheelies around him instead, but Doug nonetheless pretended everything went as planned the moment it got too close, throwing a leg and subsequently the rest of his body on top of the water-type.

"Twice now you've told me to ask Lele for help, and that's twice too many." He declared, shaking his digit at Yuina. "It's time for me to lock in and leave you in the dust, love. Nothing personal, just how things must be."

He saluted at her as his mantine was slowly pulled into the next wave.

"See you at the finish line, cadet!"

As his body returned to his girlfriend, splayed out across the water with his dizzy mantine in tow, it twitched erratically with each little playful jab of hers.

Mocking the son of a shepherd farmer, this woman...!

Bubbles arose around his head as he violently shook his head, rolling onto his back and gasp.

"HAAAH! Help? Lele?" He scoffed at the very notion, squinting at Yuina. "She would sooner pull the surfboard from under me herself."

Tapu Lele was unfortunately not there to defend herself from this terrible accusation— but then, she probably would've proven him all too right if she had been there.

"Wasn't planning to stop anyway!" He said as he stuck his tongue at Yuina, sliding over his mantine tiredly whilst stretching. "You'll regret playing it safe when I come lookin' for my prize.~"

"Pfff. Ya should know better than that." He said overconfidently, standing back up atop his Mantine boldly whilst pointing his thumb at himself. "What's a couple piddly twists before a majestic SPLASH?!"

That he hadn't accomplished yet, but just give him time. He had to get 95+ eventually, right? he had 31 tries, damn it!

One failed Magikarp splash attempt later, and he was floating back to Yuina whilst face down on the water, like an unconscious sailor. The moment she began speaking of bets, however—

"Easy enough. The one with most points wins." He said simply, before waggling his eyebrows. "As for what they get for winning..."

They could use their imagination, surely.

Now... time to go get that VICTORY!!!

And Karma must been on his side (for some godforsaken reason), because his girlfriend was eating salt water before long, her next twist attempt going... awry.

"Psst. Psssst." He whispered as he passed by on his mantine, reclined on his side lazily atop it as he did. "Ya gotta twist and turn, not flop and face plant. Pro tip."

TFW PRELUDE

PETALBURG, ft. dorian westcliff

There was good reason for Dorian to regret.

The reality was, they all should've ran.

Sparks of dark magenta fleeted around the avatar's blinding silhouette, contrasting against the glimmering white.

And then it exploded.

The ripple traveled the length of the forest in an instant, forcing tree tops to nearly dislodge off their trunks and earth to be upheaved as a near solid mass of pink scales swept through like crashing waves.

Dorian's men were swept aside by the scales, their bodies shattered by the shockwave, then repaired by the scales in an instant, then swiftly broken down by the bulbous overgrowth as cells were rapidly killed and recreated, again and again.

All around the forest, the healing scales covered the world in a curtain of pink, a loud, unrestrained laughter following its rapid expanse.

Until— a booming earthquake tore soil and plant life apart as it rocked Petalburg, silencing the laughter.

Slowly, the avatar's silhouette rose over the forest's canopy, a thickened, massive scale composed of a myriad shards serving as a platform as he looked over the horizon with wide eyes and a wider yet grin.

"Ooooh." He cooed, as the platform beneath him began to carry him forth.

On the forest beneath, his araquanid's gaze followed him, its Spidops partner thrown unto its back as it gave chase to its oddly behaving master.
