before nikolai is able to reach boris, he's stopped by a flash of blue. he doesn't have to tell his pokemon what to do; they all run like a natural machine. their formation changes, though never breaks, as escavalier rotates to tank the brunt of the DRAGON RAGE. blue flames lick away at his steely-hide, but he does not flinch. the damage is minimal.

dominic sinclair's voice cuts through the air the same time as his, and for a second the rocket underboss almost gets away with it. history works against the underboss because history is how nikolai remembers. with another rocket identified, his agenda adapts.

finally, from the skies, comes a false prophet. the unnatural colors give it away immediately, and while the others might be focused on how it kills a man (jacob berwick), nikolai has his focused set on boris.

he refuses to believe the jirachi is out of wishes. he wants to live. he has to live.

so, while the others are distracted, he continues moving; in fact, he hasn't stopped moving towards boris. he closes the distance.

only to be met with a SACRED FIRE. the sight of the mythical fires do little to strike fear within him. the pain he's felt is unimaginable, but beyond that lies only death, an old friend.

Emma Wolfe PROTECTS them but he worries it may not be enough; his pokemon have a similar thought, so their formation shifts: nidoqueen and charizard tank the front, blocking the flames but that's not the only reason why.

under the cover of the SACRED FIRE, charizard releases a powerful FLAMETHROWER that looks to scorch dominic sinclair's scolipede, ignoring its IRON DEFENSE. it'll protect boris, no doubt, but its tunnel vision will be the cause of its downfall.

pain flows through him; talking is difficult but it is a necessity. "dominic!" he yells, voice unwavering even in the thick of it all.

once brothers, now enemies.

"i need–––jirachi."

unafraid of death but not wanting to die, nikolai needs the legendary. he inches closer bit by bit, hiding behind the strong hold of his team. FOCUS ENERGY. SWORDS DANCE. IRON DEFENSE. these are the precautions nikolai has taken to ensure his survival.

the moment he feels the PSYCHIC dissipating, he knows the fate of his gardevoir. he doesn't need to turn to see the flames engulfing her body, scorching and burning until there's nothing left but charred remains.

despite the loss, he only falters in his step for a second before regaining his composure. he remains on his feet, able to walk, and the reason for it is unknown to most. but to nikolai, this is something he's prepared for.

he is also no fool: he notices the intricate paintings on the walls as he climbs the rest of the stairs. he knows what this tower holds and what fate it will bring.

Dallas Rhodes' fletchinder melts the ICE BEAM wall in no time, providing them a passageway into the top of the tower just in time for him to see the scene unfolding.

with sides quickly being formed, he chooses his. he calls out the rest of his team: nidoking, nidoqueen, escavalier, charizard.

this is the endgame.

he looks to @mercy, then jayde cross, but doesn't point.

"targets."

charizard's HEAT WAVE surges through the room, seeking to burn even allies but what's vital to their success is how the flames render priam conrad's SPORES useless.

a moment after that, SMOKESCREEN fills the room. its texture and weight is heavy enough to not get blown away by the winds; it lingers and hangs like a thick smog over the group, refusing to dissipate despite the openness of the room.

the lack of visibility allows a few things:

a sudden STONE EDGE bursts out from underneath jayde cross, looking to smack him right off the tower. without prep time, there's no predicting it. and also given what's below them, the rock is scorching hot. this is what happens when he's left stranded alone, isolated from their garchomp.

the same applies for @mercy, who might only have a mere clefable to try and counter. but, again, without prep time, it's impossible to predict.

nidoking and nidoqueen act in unison: both STONE EDGES protruding from the ground at the exact same time. how will jayde cross and @mercy react?

his pokemon surround him, providing him cover because they know, he knows, that they have to act as a single unit. SWORDS DANCE and FOCUS ENERGY are the preparations they take. they start moving towards:

"boris!"

» HEAT WAVE clears the room of SPORE.
» SMOKESCREEN fills the room, restricting vision.
» STONE EDGE erupts from underneath jay and mercy at the same time, looking to smack 'em off the roof bye.
» nikolai and his four pokemon close the distance between them and boris.

nidoqueen does her best to separate the darmanitans but all she manages is to take off one of its arms. she turns in time to see one of it spewing a cone of flames towards gardevoir, but she's too far away to react with anything other than a PROTECT to try and block the attack.

gardevoir cannot react either, not when her focus is on ensuring nikolai safely crosses the room. despite having help from cait alfric and Emma Wolfe, his struggles are made evident by how he struggles to stay on his feet.

but like her trainer, gardevoir doesn't give up either. the intense flames spew towards her but she's focused on her PSYCHIC; it stays engulfed around nikolai for long enough to help him move forward.

maybe it's selfish of him to expect so much from Emma Wolfe, even more so to expect her to stay and watch him wither away, but he wants to be selfish today. he deserves to be.

he follows their lead and moves when Emma Wolfe and cait alfric do. they attempt to charge past the fire-types, through the smoke and flames, towards possible safety. or doom.

PSYCHIC does what it can to help him stay on his feet as the situation continues to spiral. despite the looks of pity and the words that only affirm the worst, he remains hopeful because being anything but would mean giving up, and nikolai does not give up. not anymore.

there's nothing else he can say to soothe cait alfric and so he leaves her to her thoughts. he can't control what people say or think, only his own thoughts, and right now, as the darmanitan statues spring to life, his thoughts are simple.

survive.

one after the other the group start their attacks, though none of them look to be in unison. if they're acting as individuals then so will nikolai. he watches as the room fills with a SURF from jayde cross. he doesn't hear Alexei Ivanov, or maybe he did but simply didn't register it; either way, it doesn't stop FERNANDO SILPH from summoning a RAIN DANCE.

in the thick of the battle, Emma Wolfe's words repeat in his head. he turns to look at her, too weak to smile but it's evident that he's trying. "stay close to me." not because he needs to protect her, but perhaps the opposite.

hand to his belt finds nidoqueen who PROTECTS against the vehemence of the battle; from the water to the fire from below, nidoqueen charges ahead with SUPERPOWER strength. gardevoir's CAPTIVATE looks to immobilize the fire-types enough for nidoqueen to ram into them.

nothing prepares him for the pain.

he hears the brazier colliding against the splintering wood; he feels the searing heat from the mystical flames; but he doesn’t turn because there’s no need to, not when all he sees is red. it burns at an abnormal rate, scorching away at the fabrics of his clothing before piercing into his skin. his cries are lost in the thick of the flames, of the smoke, and the next thing he feels is his back, or what’s left of if, against the wall.

everything is a blur and yet he doesn’t dare to look. his breaths are shallow, weak, much like the rest of him. nothing stops his skin from glowing an eerie red; not the SPIDER WEBS from Emma Wolfe’s ariados, not the HEAL PULSE from kim cole-essam’s aromarisse, nothing.

adrenaline doesn’t soothe the pain; it helps, but not nearly enough. cait alfric’s words are barely audible but her reaction is registered. he blinks once, twice, and slowly opens his eyes to Emma Wolfe. ”thank you,” he says, voice soft. he would not have made it to the second floor without her help.

he then turns to FERNANDO SILPH, registering his words before replying with a nod. he's not a pessimist but it’s hard to feel optimistic given the circumstances. he tries to shift on the ground but the pain persists; it feels as if a thousand needles are being pressed into his skin simultaneously.

hand to his pocket, he finds gardevoir’s pokeball. she understands the situation immediately, but like everyone else, is unable to help. ”please help me up.” the group will move on without him, that much he understands, so he’ll try his best to keep up.

her PSYCHIC aids him to his feet. he leans an arm against the wall as he breathes out the pain. he looks to cait alfric and says, ”i’m fine, don’t worry.”

his body might be broken but his spirit persists. he’ll follow the group for as long as he can.

an appreciative nod is sent towards a good friend and an even better partner, Dallas Rhodes of sootopolis.

all in sync, the paper tags burst into flames unnaturally big that forces him to immediately drop it into the brazier. he narrowly avoids being scorched by it. shifting his attention to the rest of the room, he sees the other tags doing the exact same.

"careful," he says to cait alfric, perhaps a bit too late. he watches as the flames in his brazier morph and dance into images of bountiful harvests and good health. too lost in the images, he doesn't notice what the other flames produce except for jayde cross's.

and just like that, he has an added agenda.

when the voice dies, it's far too late to stop surging of flames from engulfing the room. "gaea–" it only takes the fire-type a few seconds before she's by his side, wings spread to shield him and cait alfric from the harshness of the flames. though the heat still travels and it's searing.

"the stairs!" attention must be given to the group because their safety, though not his number one priority, still matters. his worries about the wall vanish the moment he hears @mercy's voice calling out from the top.

he starts moving with a hand on cait alfric's shoulder to guide her forward. Isra Nightingale soon steals her away from him but he doesn't mind, not when there might be others that need his help.

"this way!" his voice travels through the smoke, slicing as he waves and gestures with his arms towards the stairs. only when he's sure the majority have made their way up does he start his escape.

turning to charizard, nikolai offers her a soft smile and a nod before gesturing behind her. "air slash and i'll recall you." his voice is muffled out by the smoke as he coughs. and coughs. but he holds her pokeball in his hand and readies himself.

gaea's strong wing lifts, fanning away smoke for mere seconds before swinging forward to send an AIR SLASH rippling across the room. its intensity is lessened but it's enough to disperse the smoke and flames even if only temporarily. a beam of red hits charizard's back to recall her.

nikolai is among the last few to run up the stairs.

the group rallies to his suggestion like mareeps. perhaps it is because they lack a sense of direction; without one, they are all individuals floating aimlessly, waiting for someone, or something to lead.

to cait alfric's question, he answers: "i'm sure the group has enough fire-types."

there are too many faces in the crowd for him to focus on, so their true intentions; unjust like @mercy and Emma Wolfe; rightful like Alexei Ivanov and Isra Nightingale; or indifferent like priam conrad and Lucas Lane; go unnoticed.

for now, a shadow of mystery remains cast over the group.

summoning his charizard, he gestures for her to remain idle while he starts his circle around the room. one brazier after the other, he makes sure to carefully place a single crystal shard and a paper tag in each one. he passes the likes of cait alfric, Alexei Ivanov, Emma Wolfe, and jayde cross, but doesn't stop until he's back at his original brazier.

"those not helping should stay clear while those helping should try their best not to burn the tower down."

he steps towards the middle of the room so they can all hear him. "my charizard has those two." he then points to jayde cross. "your charizard has that one." then Alexei Ivanov. "your magmortar has those two." he points to the two braziers, then takes a step towards cait alfric. "and we have this one."

six total. all they have to do is time it right.

"count of three. go on one." he pulls out a convenient lighter and holds a few paper tags in his hand. "three." he lights up the paper tags. "two." he holds it carefully over the brazier.

"one."

the clouds are ill omens that hang overhead, foreshadowing tragedy that has yet to happen but will because circumstances commands it to. the journey is eerily silent as the souls on the boat keep to themselves perhaps out of caution. nikolai wasn’t present for the regirock incident, but reports told a tale of a team with internal conflict so strife that it divided them. today might be no different. it doesn’t feel different: they might be a team but it feels like anything but.

the silence of the trip allows him to size up the others. everyone has their own agendas, him included, and that’s what makes people unpredictable. he doesn’t trust these people and he doesn’t expect them to trust him either, especially not after the winter ball. it's why he’s not hidden under the cover of a hood. no more hiding. he's responsible for his own mistakes.

nikolai hangs back when the boat docks and is among the last few to leave. he catches a glimpse of cait alfric and stops his advance to check up on her. ”feeling better, cait?” it was hard not to notice her battle against seasickness earlier. he flashes her a comforting smile before ushering her forward. ”come on. let's not keep them waiting.”

his shadow hangs heavy as he enters the tower. taking a moment to breathe in the grandeur of the tower, he looks around the room and takes in its details. he circles the room, noticing the empty braziers, the crystal shards, and finally the staircase at the other end of the room. but it doesn’t lead anywhere.

no one’s piped up yet, so he clears his throat and steps towards one of the crystal shards. ”the stairs lead to a wall, but i’m sure this place holds its secrets.” he stops by one of the empty braziers. ”perhaps we need to announce our arrival.”

placing the crystal shard in the brazier, he reaches for one of the paper tags. ”can anyone read this?” he tugs it out of the nail. ”if not,” he places it in the same brazier.

”there are five others. i suggest lighting them all at once.”

Traitors Never Prosper (Nikolai/Closed)

the ex-rocket beast isn't alive out of sheer luck, no, it is not because the universe wills it so, no, it is because of him and himself only. he wants to be alive and he's taken cautionary steps to make sure he stays that way.

some things can be changed; like the route he takes from his home to the gym, but routine remains static. he has to be at the gym at a certain time and he knows that makes him vulnerable. it makes him predictable. but it also makes him much more aware of his surroundings.

unfortunately for the mad dog of rocket, nikolai sees him coming. he's prepared for it. so when the mad dog steps out of the shadows and reveals his presence, nikolai does not flinch. he stands strong, stoic, exuding his presence as gym leader.

"i'm surprised to see you in my city. how brave of you." or foolish, only time will tell. nikolai's hands hover close to his pockets, ready to react as his eyes never leave the man.

"what do you want?"

sootopolis gym leader / ex rocket-beast

he was once a prolific trainer in kanto on track to becoming champion until rocket stepped into his life.

three years ago: rocket kidnapped his family and forced him to join their organization. he did their dirty work and quickly rose through the ranks.

two years ago: he was a known rocket beast. probably the best.

one and a half years ago: he deflected and went to the league, gave them all he had in hopes of turning the tide even if it meant risking the lives of his loved ones. the league took him in but they did not trust him. they still don't.

one year ago: rocket killed kanto and along with it, his family. he ran away to hoenn and sought refuge.

one year ago: the league pitied him and though he wasn't enough to win them the war, they understood his sacrifice and offered him the gym leader spot in sootopolis. his past affiliation with rocket remains a mystery to most in hoenn.

two months ago: rocket invaded hoenn. once again he wasn't enough to make a difference. he allowed the power plant to fall.

now: he's snapped out of his shell and has taken charge of his gym. he's more active in the community, within the league, and in the region because he will not allow it to fall. he's actively seeking ways to combat against rocket.

potential plots: rockets from his past. current league acquaintances. anything.

rocket boss

beaten and mistreated his entire life, one day he finally snapped and took control. kanto fell because of him.

nineteen years ago: young silas was sent to study in slateport. he still considers it his true home.

thirteen years ago: young silas was forced back to kanto against his will to start working for rocket. he was molded into the man he is today through violence and nothing else.

one year ago: after too long of being his father's lapdog, he took matters into his own hands. as the new rocket boss, it only took him a few months to destroy kanto.

two months ago: after months of preparation, he took hoenn by storm and overthrew the league in slateport. with one city now under his control, there isn't much to stop him from achieving what he wants.

now: he sets his eyes on a particular target. what exactly; only time will tell.

potential plots: rocket underlings. deflectors. league enemies. anything.

a hushed breath, a tired breath.

"are you alright?"

words interrupt the silence of the thick and vast forest that holds an infamous reputation; one he hopes not to experience for himself. nikolai stops by a tree and lowers himself to a knee, careful with his movements as he leans the man he's been helping walk onto a tree.

dallas rhodes: friend, partner, but also an idiot who has fallen ill to the plague. "i told you not to drink from that stream, you idiot." beads of sweat drag down the side of dallas' face, tainting his bare, beautiful skin.

"tempted to just leave you here."
