The woman blinks at him, and for a moment Sterling is sure it’s because he looks rough from running all over Mt. Pyre. But then she gives him a dazzling smile, and the realization clicks before she’s even speaking. He wants to leave, now more than ever, but it’s too late for that- besides, if he did, she would definitely know something was up. Which….from what he could piece together, she already did. So, instead of getting to some hotel as soon as possible, he braced himself for this interaction.

”I think you have the wrong person.” He’s lying through his teeth, and it’s obvious, but he’s practically pleading with her to let it be until he’s more capable of dealing with this. And then-

He realizes he doesn’t have any idea of how to introduce himself. So, either way, he’s backed into a corner. Unless Mila decides to take pity on him, which he’s already half given up on. The Marill doesn’t escape his attention, but the Alolan Persian does- until it doesn’t. The Pokemon must have been trying to make a meal out of the mouse Pokemon, but with the snort of Camerupt, it comes up short.

Sterling reaches for a pokeball before he can even really think about it, tossing it at the Persian before it can even think to get away.

”Just a regular asshole.” It’s lighthearted enough, and this time Sterling’s grin isn’t as strained- it seems like he’s had to fake a smile for the last few missions. Which was more his fault than not for going for them, but still. He had to make a living somehow, and the rewards were a sure way to make cash quick.

Ki pulls out some Pokemon of his own- both fairy types, if Sterling remembers correctly. He’s about to comment on their apparently fairy-type solidarity, but the other man beats him to it by noting the Sylveon- who looks like he would rather be anywhere else. And, maybe for a second, Sterling’s blood runs cold at the mention of the fun fact (or not-so-fun fact). He tries to do a good job of hiding it, hoping he could at least brush it off as not expecting such a cute Pokemon to have such dark lore. ”Aster-“ A small gesture towards the Sylveon when he says it, ”was my first Pokemon.”

An attempt to change the subject away from the ancient lore? Maybe- it turned out he didn’t need to do it, anyways, because Ki is already mentioning that dragon types were weak against fairy types. Which meant what Sterling had heard was right. To an extent.

Sterling isn’t exactly late, but there are already a few dragon Pokemon out and about. Already, he’s reaching for the pokeballs that hold his Sylveon and Mimikyu; he had heard somewhere that fairy types were immune to dragon type moves, and he wanted to test it out. And, this time, he wouldn’t have to worry about throwing them into any real danger. Hopefully. He didn’t know a lot about rangers, but he really hoped they were better than that.

Which….considering a few missions he had been on, he wasn’t so sure of. But it would be fine. He knew his Pokemon’s limits when it came to battling.

He doesn’t notice Ki at first, too busy releasing Aster and Wisteria that he doesn’t look up. Only once the fairy types are out of their pokeballs does he finally pay attention. And immediately brighten, because hey, the guy who taught a toddler to say ‘fuck’ is here! They’re not close or anything, but it’s better than the alternative.

Sootopolis is pretty. Or it would be, if Sterling would even think of stopping long enough to take in the scenery. As it is, he’s pretty much bouncing off the walls at the idea of being so close to dragon Pokemon. Which probably makes him a bit of a nerd, but if it does…Well, it’s just something he’ll learn to deal with. He practically raced to get ready, and his pace is almost a jog as he heads to the area in question. He would be more eager to see who he was working with, but with his mind completely focused on dragon types, it's hard to imagine he'll pay much attention.

At this rate, Sterling was convinced that it would be the cause of his nightmares. Looking for the athlete had taken longer than he was expecting, and he was tired. Staying up all night would do that to a person, especially if it meant wandering some fucked up mountain with Pokemon graves. On the plus side, he hadn’t been chased down by someone with an axe. Or a chainsaw, or any deadly weapons. Which wasn’t much, considering he so desperately just wanted a soft bed, but it was something.

He had given the Pokemon with him a well-deserved break- which meant the two that hadn helped the search would have to escort him back down and-

Didn’t he pass that area a second ago, or was the sleep deprivation really getting to him? He really hoped it was just some normal-ass reason and not that he was lost. Which…was probably also a normal reason. He was too tired to get into the specifics of if he was lost, mostly because it wouldn’t take much to spiral into a “holy shit he’s going to die here” moment. Which was the second-to-last thing he needed.

The last being lost, of course. He really didn’t want to be lost.

He was trying to figure out a plan when a voice came from nearby- and, a bit clumsily, he started heading towards it, desperately hoping it wasn’t some scary shit or another missing person’s case. And maybe he didn’t think of the consequences of very nearly blocking a hiker’s path, especially with two Pokemon trailing behind, because that’s exactly what he did.

It’s not much of a greeting, but he’s too tired to come up with anything else. There’s a warning in the back of his mind that this woman seems familiar somehow, but he ignores it for now (only time would tell if that was a mistake or not). ”I think I was a bit lost.”

”Well, I only have one fire type with me.” It’s spoken with bit of a laugh, although an awkward one. Of course, there are the rest of his Pokemon, but Begonia is the only one that would have the biggest chance of helping. Once the silence falls between them, he’s more than eager to let it stay that way- it’s easier to talk himself out of leaving if he has to speak up first.

Once they reach the bridge, though, there’s no turning back, and he realizes that with a sinking feeling. He probably could, and leave Jonathan to deal with this on his own, but he would just feel worse than ever if he did that. Damn his morals- sure, this stranger seems more than capable of dealing with it, but Sterling doesn’t want to take that risk in case he was wrong. Besides, he’s already here, and the sooner they get this over with the sooner he can rest.

And holy shit, is he going to avoid any actual action for a long time.

”I guess so.” He grins when he says it, hoping it’ll hide the fact that he wants to get the hell out of dodge. ”I think they should pay us more for cleaning up this mess.” Instead of speaking again, he moves to ruffle Begonia’s fur in something supposedly comforting. He doesn’t know if the Growlithe is half as anxious as he is, but he’s inwardly apologizing to her either way.

This woman, probably a ranger if Sterling really had to guess, didn’t seem all too impressed by him. Which, in all honesty, was fair- but still. If some Pokemon had suddenly dove down at anyone else, he doubted they’d be perfectly calm. Which, either way, he doesn’t have to exactly explain himself to her. If he wanted to be startled by a Pokemon, that was his business.

He’s being so defensive about his earlier startle that he almost misses what she’s asking- and he really doesn’t want to go alone. ”Well, I’m not exactly familiar, but Begonia should be able to track pretty well.” Emphasis on should. It wasn’t like he had tried to track someone down with the Growlithe before, because he hadn’t had a need to up until now. The Pokemon in question is alert enough, which is probably a good thing.

Unless she’s not able to help and the supposed ranger leaves Sterling to his fate.

Sterling doesn't even really notice the bird at first; he's too focused on other things to look up. The Swampert does, though, and for a moment he debated putting the Pokemon away- it doesn't seem like anything bad is going to happen. Not unless he really fucks up somehow. Which, honestly, was just as apt to happen as not.

His weird self-loathing is interrupted, fortunately, by the duo landing mere inches away. A swear comes from him before he can stop it. Which, hopefully, he won't be blamed for, except for the fact that maybe he could have avoided being startled if he were actually paying attention. Once Sterling realizes he's actually not going to die, he shoves down the embarrassment that threatens to make his face red. Just in time for him to connect what the stranger was saying to what he was doing. Supposedly.

"I wish I had. I'm looking for him too." Not really. He realizes tbat mistake, and is quick to backtrack. "Well, I was aboyt to. But this just has 'slasher film' energy, so I was trying to figure something out." As he says it, he hesitates and reaches for two other Pokeballs- just to add to it. And because he feels safer with more than just the Swampert. Once the Growlithe and Sylveon are released, he glances back to the stranger. "If we're both looking for the same person, we could go together."

But he didn’t know when to call it quits, apparently, so here he was, about to become the victim in some real life slasher film because he was looking for a “missing person”. One who was probably dead and gone at that- something he was trying to ignore, even though he wasn’t good at actual rescue missions and the thought of that made him sick.

He didn’t even know what he was sitting around and waiting for. Some poor soul to pass by so he could drag them into this? To see how long he could stand around before some masked bastard with a chainsaw popped out and started chasing him? The only thing that really convinced him he wasn’t about to get axe-murdered was the Swampert relaxing nearby. Surely Peony would be more on guard if something was about to actually happen.

If the other man recognizes his name, he doesn’t show it, and Sterling has to push down some odd mixture of relief and disappointment. He doesn’t even know why he’s disappointed- being known could just mean more work for him, and that’s the last thing he wanted. Still, he would have thought he was a bigger name than that…

That’s not his problem now, though. What is his problem is the fact that this man, Jonathan, thinks that the one causing all the trouble is a Froslass, and he only has one fire type Pokemon. One he doesn’t particularly care to lose, either. Judging from the Charizard, though, he supposes there’s not too much to worry about. And his Growlithe seems ready for whatever’s ahead- more than Sterling is, anyways.

”I hope there’s just one.” It’s not quite a confession that the screams are unnerving, but it comes close. They get louder as the two get closer, but the following silence almost makes Sterling ask the man if he wants to turn around and get a nice reward some other way. He moves to shove his hands in his pockets, praying that Jonathan just assumes he’s shaking from the cold alone.

He’s not entirely sure if being interesting is a good thing or not, but he assumes that doesn’t matter for the time being. What does matter is the reward – or saving people, if he had wanted to go the hero route. Which he doesn’t. Really, he can’t understand why people would risk their necks for someone who probably won’t even thank them.

At least going in it for the reward gave him something to look forward to. He pushes those thoughts away just in time to introduce himself. ”Sterling Matthews. Nice to meet you.” It seemed he had good luck, too, because the second the words left his mouth, their introduction was interrupted by people yelling for help.

”Ready whenever you are.” He snaps his fingers at the Growlithe to get her attention before he’s walking to stand at the entrance of the cave.

The redhead had already voiced his thoughts, but Sterling really hopes the reward is worth whatever they’ll find in the cave.
