“I should not have taken that request.”

Elaine planted her head onto her palm as she breathed a deep sigh. As she stared around the walls of rock and the took in the crashing of flowing water around her, she had come to the conclusion this was all quite ridiculous.

“I mean what kind of kid plays in Meteor Falls and loses a locket?”

Though as much as she was braying the question, that would not change the facts that she knew the answer and that she had taken that kid’s request to begin with.

“Of course I know who. That kid.”

As she muttered to herself, there was one thing clear. Even if there was a kid stupid enough to lose their stuff in a cave, she was the idiot who had taken up his request.

What punctuated her plummet was not an all-ending thud and a splatter, but the feeling of warmth that could only come from a living being dampening it. That accidental descent had not ended in tragedy as she had landed on the wing of the Charizard who had been carrying ‘Chryssa’. With some quick maneuvering, the winged beast had moved her and Titania off its wing and onto its back.

As she had come to try and regain her balance, with one hand keeping Titania in her embrace, she reached her other hand out towards Chryssa’s upper back in hopes that she could quickly stabilize her balance and jump off back onto her prior mount as quickly as possible. She would apologize afterwards, but the problem of an apology became moot as her hand went further than she expected. Rather than hitting the clothed back of a person, it hit the back of the Charizard she was riding.

No doubt she had stabilized her balance, however, the person who should have been there was clearly not there.

Unfortunately, there was not much time to dwell on it as she heard Stormy call out for her to regain her bearings. Quickly, she gave a light jump onto the Charizard she had been riding before, keeping her eyes away from the ground as she did so.

“You should probably keep a higher vantage point while I descend to rendezvous with Ms. Llewellyn.” She said to the Charizard she had just been on. She had a few ideas as to what was going on. Either there was an illusion being cast from the ground, or there was something on its back. Either way, there was nothing a little altitude couldn’t help with. Moreover, the Charizard could keep watch on the myriad events on the ground by hovering like a Mandibuzz over a rotten carcass.

“Ginga. Descend to 8 o’ clock. Wadjet and I will take 4!” With a quick shout, she then pointed to the position where she wanted the Charizard to descend to and stay slightly airborne.

As she clutched the best she could to the Charizard’s back, hoping that she wouldn’t slip off like before, they landed. In the distance, she could see her Metagross also making a faster descent, until it landed some tens of meters away.

While there were supposedly multiple of the monkeys moving around, it was better to stick to the one that they had at least been able to secure. After all, there was a clear mankey wrench being thrown into the works somewhere.

And so, she caught sight of Stormy who was now approaching. All she could say for certain, and loud enough for everyone to hear was one thing.

“Huh. That’s not Ms. Glasgow either. I wonder where she went.”

• Elaine notices the illusion of Chryssa and subsequently suggests ascent to the Charizard that saved her

And the more that they had moved in, the more the chaos had begun to spiral. Entropy was a quantity that would be ever increasing and the world showed no signs of bypassing that ever fundamental law here.

As much as she had been wanting to say she held some control over what was happening, she could not deny the fact that the world was moving around and she was being pulled along with it without any say in where she was going.

After all, Elaine was being carried, not by Ginga, but by her current superior’s Charizard and being pulled along for the ride.

So, it was inevitable that she would see someone on the rope bridge before an incoming attack disturbed her view. While Stormy’s Charizard had dodged at the last second, the one that Elaine had been riding upon seemed to act more adeptly as it skillfully dodged with a few flips and rolls.

Unfortunately, it noticed too late.

Mid-dodge, its load had become light, almost imperceptible.

And so, too, did Elaine notice it too late. The world seemed to slow for her.

The weird screeching and hollering from ‘Chryssa’.

The shrieks of pain of the source of the attack.

The thundering of the whips which her mount had just evaded.

All of it melded together as the lack of touch sensation on her butt and the sight of the Charizard growing ever distant caught up to her.

“Ah.”

Her pupils widened. Her heart raced and caught in her throat so bad she couldn’t even scream.

Elaine, with Titania in her arms, had been snatched away by gravity and Ginga was not close enough to catch her.

Notes: She be falling

A piercing howl resounded through heaven and earth. Elaine narrowed her eyes as the sound had passed though her ears. How could anyone not hear such a cacophonous disruption as that?

There were many things she had expected when she had awoken this morning and had begun to go about her day. But, to be taken up by a member of the Elite Four was far from the realm of expectations for the young woman. Being carried by said woman’s Charizard was also far from the realm of expectations.

But, Elaine could not toss away an opportunity like this. Whatever the job may have been, working up the ladder of the league was something she would have to defer if she didn’t take the opportunity to gain some notoriety among the higher ups through this.

Though, while she was laser-focused, the other colleague that had been picked up seemed far more giddy. Her eyes quickly glazed over Chryssa, taking in everything she had said, before turning back forward.

“There’s a big difference between thinking out of the box and coming up with ridiculous flights of fancy.” The young woman muttered while letting out a quick sigh.

As Stormy began to take up to the skies, Elaine picked up two of her Pokeballs and responded. “No problems. I’ll keep close.”

As the two of them return to air, she quickly releases the two Pokemon one by one.

“Ginga. Use Magnet Rise, stay afloat until you can get my commands, and keep watch on the situation.” The metallic beast quickly floated in air, retracted its limbs, and kept itself close to the two Charizards.

“Titania, stay with me. Both of you, get ready to engage.”

Though the Charizard may feel a new twenty five pounds weighing down on it, that would hardly be enough to prevent it’s acceleration.

In stark contrast to the first dive, the second was eerily calm. It was almost as if the turbulence that had only minutes ago barreled through the water had never been there. The water remained almost still, ebbing and flowing in its own natural pattern. The fauna that had been moving out there no longer entered her vision.

It was a picturesque scene of underwater tranquility.

And Selena seemed to agree as well.

It had gotten to the point where she couldn’t even see whatever vessel Selena had the luck to catch in her eyes. Was it real or perhaps a phantom?

“I can’t see anything. Should we widen the search perimeter?”

In other words, the amount of necessary information they had gleaned about their supposed underwater vehicle was zilch. Given how quickly the situation had gone awry during their first diving attempt, this should have been an acceptable result.

Yet, she could not help but find it somewhat disappointing that more details weren’t elucidated, even cursing the fact that it was not her who had seen the submarine first in the first foray and gleaned off some information.

“In that case, no point in hesitating.”

Elaine knelt back down on the Metagross’s back.

“Ginga, let’s go back in. Try a different angle this time, though.” It was best to try to avoid the current of fauna that had intervened in their descent before.

With that, Ginga formed another barrier, trapping the air in before it descended back into the waters.

Round two of the deep dive had begun.

Realistically, his guess would be a logical first attempt. Elaine shrugged as she took the moment to move her foot back a bit to allow the running pups to cross in front of her.

“That’s a decent first guess, but no. She’s a Metagross.”

No harm in giving away that information now that he had made a decent guess. It wasn’t like she was worried that this stranger would have anything to use against her anyway.

“She once tried to play the role of a car to dangerous effects. We got berated quite a bit by the commissioner back then. Luckily, that scandal never made it to the news.”

Given that Elaine hadn’t seen the submarine that Selena was talking about, she could really do nothing more than make idle speculation after speculation with what little information she had. Rather than trying to force her attempts at piecing together the minimal knowledge she had, she turned her focus to Selena.

“Huh. That’s it? The way you were speaking about it, I had figured either you had personal experience with a legendary Pokemon or you had logically come to a conclusion that it was an expected outcome. Either way feels a bit outlandish, mind you.”

As much as she felt like she wanted to press further, she could hold that off for later.

“Were you able to catch any more details about the submarine when you caught a glance? We’ll have to dive back down anyway, but it’s better to get all the necessary information out of the way so we can narrow out possibilities. Shore out what we know versus what we don’t.”

MISSION: SOMETHING FISHY

Elaine winced as her hand made contact with Selena. What had felt like a shock seemed to course through every epineurium in her hand all the way through her spine. It was quick, but it was enough to make her muscles contract and keep holding tight. Even if she wanted to, Elaine was completely unable to let go.

But that was not the crux of the whole phenomenon. Far from what she was feeling, it was what she was witnessing that drew far more attention from Selena.

The woman had taken on a glow that resembled an electricity. The light emanating from her and the sparking of the air spread out like branches on a tree or a snowflake to the point where it had even gotten onto Ginga’s head.

Even as Ginga had resurfaced and undid the barrier to allow new air in, Elaine could still feel that.

Really, what was that all about?

After letting go, taking a deep sigh, and clenching and unclenching her fist, she heard Selena’s words of exasperated.

Yeah, I’ll leave it for when she’s a bit calmer.

“I didn’t really catch a glimpse of that, so you’re going to have to guide the two of us back to that. But why would there be a submarine out here for long enough that it’s causing disturbances in the fauna?”

Wait a minute. Wasn’t there something even more jarring about those statements that she had just heard?

“Wait! Before that, what do you mean by another legendary Pokemon?!” Clearly, it was time to rip the bandage off of that wound.

MISSION: SOMETHING FISHY

“Nothing yet!”

Even if it was muffled, Elaine could still try to make sure to properly communicate. Though she questioned if Metagross could use Psychic to enable some telepathic communication, she decided not to push further considering that method was what was keeping oxygen in and the torrents of the sea out.

It didn’t take long until Elaine could see the light of the sun getting almost completely refracted from within the water, leaving only whatever weak light Ginga’s own Psychic was emitting out to illuminate the depths.

In the meantime, she made sure to keep an eye returning to Selena as they darted around, trying to pick up any information from what minimal visual stimuli she could get.

And as she did, she noticed the light she had been keeping her eyes on flickering.

“Ginga, up!”

Without any hesitation, she and Ginga flew upwards until they could see Selena and her Metagross.

“Get on! Hurry!” Quickly, Elaine stood up and held a hand out to Selena. She could only hope she would take it.

Elaine found herself chuckling as the two dog Pokemon began to play around, with Fiamma taking a moment to back up and poise itself for a game of tag...or a race. Whatever it could come up with that involved running around, really.

“Ginga’s a bit big and being a steel-type, it can cause damage to structures if it’s not careful, so it prefers to stay in a Pokeball whenever we’re near anywhere populated.”
