The sounds of dirt being shifted and crumpled by a pair of shoes resounded as the Wingull squawked in the sunny heavens above. Below her, the waves crashed against the vertical face of rock and dirt she stood upon, falling apart before returning to crash once again.

Anyone with a pair of eyes could tell that the young woman did not belong there. Her blazer, ribbon, and skirt reeked of a person who was neither a fisher nor a swimmer. Her hair ornaments reeked of someone who had failed to leave something behind.

Elaine had been hired for a job—one that took her to the Lilycove shoreline. Such was the life of a freelancer who still clung to her glory days and stayed stuck in the crags of those days.

And as she stared off, almost listlessly, into the sea and the horizon before her, something had dared encroached her field of vision—a Metagross floating above the water, carrying a single person who had decided to call out to her.

As she turned her head to focus on the new person, she pinned a piece of paper folded twice between her fingers.

“Yes, that would be me.”

On second thought, that’s probably a good idea. Would beat walking around here.

She pulled out a Pokeball and released a Metagross of her own. After placing her hand on the Metagross’s front leg, she directed her gaze to the one calling herself Selena.

“You can call me Elaine. May I ask what brings you out here?”

Taking a second after she pulled out her Pokeball, she thought.

Wait. This is Ginga’s Pokeball. Did I grab this one on reflex?

Without a further thought, she put it back into her bag. After all, Ginga was not exactly the type of Pokmon to let out in the middle of a city like this. Instead, the best one to pick up was probably...

“Fiamma. Come out.”

The fire pup jumped out, landing next to the electric corgi that had been let out nearby it.

“I’m personally in the mood for some tea. I always felt that kind of thing complemented the waves of the sea in the daytime the best.”

Despite the rocky start, she had found herself falling fairly easily into his pace. As much as she was not a fan of being the follower, she would let it slide. Just this once.

“The other one I picked up, Ginga, isn’t really a fan of cramped places like cities.”

“That sounds like it would work.” To be frank, she wasn’t so sure about where the man was suggesting, but she could only say that was due to relative unfamiliarity with the city. But, if he had an idea of a quaint little location, she would he fine. As long as she wasn’t attacked by a swarm of Wingull for her food, it would be fine. Probably.

But, as she followed him, she realized something important.

Ah. He didn’t introduce himself.

The man knew her name, but she didn’t know his. And unfortunately for her, the topic had already shifted to something else entirely.

Elaine was once the type who could be seen as completely calm under pressure. Even during the toughest of cases, her countenance would never once show a semblance of cracking.

Yet, her she was, clearly sweating and mentally stumbling. Ah, how the great ace detective of the past had fallen.

“Y-yeah. I have a few.” She picked out a random Pokeball from the three full ones. Did she notice that her eyes were wide as she spoke. Her mind had barely taken in what she was hearing as her inner self pulled at its hair and screamed.

The power of plausible deniability was a wonderful thing to behold. Both as far as Elaine was concerned and as far as the man in front of her was concerned. Given his awkward response, she could only sigh as she realized her interpretation of what was happening was far off the mark.

He really was just offering, in good faith, to guide her around the city.

Was she still feeling a slight sense of suspicion towards him? She’d met more than enough terrifying people in a lifetime who were adept enough at wielding a mask that she could hardly be faulted for a little paranoia.

Still, she did say she would take him up on his offer. So, at the very least, she would see it out from the start and crush it the moments things got too dicey. She was confident enough she couldn’t be pulled into a checkmate that easily.

“I was honestly looking for somewhere a bit more relaxing. A cafe overlooking the shore, a bench next to a lighthouse, a good view of the sea. Something like that.” Averting her gaze ever so slightly, she muttered something barely audible to the other man. “I just needed some time to get away from things.”

Focusing her gaze back onto his eyes, though, she interjected her own train of thought. “That being said, my name’s Elaine. You can simply call me that.”

After all, proper introductions were paramount.

“What?!”

The young woman quickly pivoted in order to find a much larger man suddenly appearing from behind her. Though she was one to remain calm at most times, she couldn’t help but find herself startled by the man she had not even noticed approaching her. She was already only half facing him with her palms directed towards him and her legs bent in what nobody with an understanding of martial arts would dare to even call a stance.

Moreover…

Did he hear me? Ah...he’s offering me directions and using his position at the local gym to create an air of authority.

Finally realizing she wasn’t in any actual immediate danger, she retracted her sham of a stance and turned to face the man before her. He didn’t seem to be the type who was hard on the eyes. He was also offering to help her find her way around.

She couldn’t think of any reason to offer that to a stranger. Unless...

“I get it. This is supposed to be a pick-up!” Elaine clasped her fist in her hand as if she had made a breakthrough. “I’m flattered, really I am.”

And she was really blushing. Slightly. Not that she’d acknowledge it.

“But, I’m not yet ready for a relationship just yet. Though, if you’re still willing on that offer of showing me around I’d be glad to take you up on it.”

But who was to say she had to look the gift Ponyta in the mouth?

It was a forgone conclusion. She just needed some time to herself. No matter how much Elaine denied it, running at 100% all the time was a terrible idea. Sometimes, it was more reasonable to just allow herself to kick back, rest, and gaze forlornly upon the world before her.

Unfortunately, she hadn’t had much luck as far as finding that place. She had recently just arrived at Lilycove City after a short detour to Mt. Pyre, and she was in dire need of some rest. But, Lilycove City was a large city, probably in the same league as Slateport or Mauville, even if of different character.

Was there a nice overlook with a good view of the sea? A park with the soothing sight of plain flora? A restaurant or cafe with some soothing tea or ice cream? The young woman hadn’t even the slightest idea.

And so, Elaine found herself putting up a subtle scowl as she walked around without aim.

“Where should I even go?”

All in the meanwhile, her scarf fluttered as if trying to catch a simple breeze and finding itself lost among turbulent air.

Such was only natural for a foreigner in the region, after all.
