[break][break] She's not wearing much, so all it takes is a small tug at her robe to fall away and pool at her feet.

[break][break] There's no shame in her gaze as she looks at him, crawling then upon the bed to slowly peel apart his own clothes. Button by button, slowly, as she presses herself against him. She nibbles at his lower earlobe, sultry, as she unbuckles his belt and throws it upon the floor.

[break][break] "You've already told me," she murmured. "Now it's my turn to show you."

[break][break] Her heart thuds with fear — knowing very well the implication of her words — but more than that, she feels a flush of heated desire when she pulls apart his shirt with a snap.

[break][break] With no warning, Mila leans down and drags down his pants in one fell swoop.

[break][break] Tired or not, she knew there was one thing that she could rely on to kickstart their morning.

[break][break] Flashes of the past year spun by her — the League Holiday party, his birthday, the shared entanglements that they'd been unable to hide, each of their injuries that they'd spent nursing each other for the past year. But then she thought about the way that they used to be, before they'd reconnected. The flippant way that she'd used to regard him, and the scathing way that he'd used to handle her. How he'd never seemed to understand her spirals, and how she'd never bothered to understand his wishes.

[break][break] She was everything that he didn't want — wild, unpredictable, hurtful — and he was everything that she wanted but was too scared to have.

[break][break] Her hands slipped behind his neck to pull him closer, opening her mouth to deepen the kiss.

[break][break] To show him everything that words could not possibly express.

[break][break] How much his confession meant to her. How much she desperately wanted to return it.

[break][break] How much she dearly didn't want him to leave.

[break][break] When they pulled away to breathe, her eyes were hazy with desire and something else. Her forehead pressed against his.

[break][break] "Okay," she murmured, a smile tugging at her lips. "To the bedroom it is."

[break][break] Grabbing his hand, she led him to her bedroom.

[break][break] It would be a familiar space, for the both of them. Sheets that hadn't been properly folded, clothes in piles around them, art supplies and unfinished sketchwork littered over a nearby desk. A picture of a young Gunner Graves that she had stolen from GIDEON GRAVES's possession left out on her nightstand, from when she had been staring at it all night.

[break][break] And it was an intentional thing on Mila's part, at least. Talking about the past was painful. She preferred to live in the present. It was easier that way. It hurt less that way.

[break][break] But with Gunner Graves, it always seemed like their past and present were always wrapped up together in one, like a ball of tension-filled rubber-bands.

[break][break] They were always in danger of snapping.

[break][break] Gunner released her, but Mila refused to back down. She stepped forward, glaring up at him — only to find the softness in his gaze stirred something in her heart. Her throat tightened, momentarily unsteady in the face of such unexpected vulnerability.

[break][break] Suddenly, she felt untethered. As if the ground had shifted beneath her very feet. Her hands found his forearms, clutching onto him more for her own balance than his.

[break][break] She blinked, unaware of how soft her voice had gotten.

She winced as he grabbed her forearms, inadvertently pressing them up against each other. But rather than recoil back with fear at the aggressive gesture, Mila merely glared up at him, eyes full of the very same fire that had scorched them both to begin with — all those years ago.[break][break]

"If you care, then why don't you fucking start acting like it?" [break][break]

If he cared, he wouldn't be doing all of this. He wouldn't send himself into fire again and again and again — all put of some misguided notion that he had to save the world, had to save her. [break][break]

Because it wasn't about her, was it? [break][break]

"Because let's be honest. This isn't about me - it's about you, and your fucking hero complex. Because of your past, your guilt, because of -" [break][break]

She said the name like it was venom on her tongue, because it was. [break][break]

Lately, ever since the attack in Area Zero, she'd felt more anxiety than was usual at the prospect of Team Rocket lurking around the corner. Especially with the ambiguous other entity that Gunner Graves had mentioned in the hospital room, just shortly after her stay there.

[break][break] The designer had always known that Gunner had been involved in some type of super-secret, government work. But she'd figured that it had to do more with having high-profile clientele, or maybe even had to do with that law degree that he could've had.

[break][break] Her hand lowers - just slightly - as she stares at him. But try as she might, all she can see the chaos that's on the television, crackling still like background noise in her ears that she can't quite be rid of.

[break][break] "You were working at a conference?"

[break][break] It occurs to her that she'd never really asked him what he did. Not really. Mostly because she had never wanted to know, but also because he hadn't ever wanted to provide it to her. Their relationship was one built on half-truths and lies, and it never felt like she'd deserved to know.

[break][break] "Are you?" she said, glancing up at him, at the depths of his very-blue eyes. Her bottom lip trembled. "I saw them on the TV, Gunner. Nothing about that looked fine."

[break][break] She was always moving forward, ahead, running away from whatever demons threatened to drag her back down into the endless, black current of her thoughts. It was why she was always in denial about everything in her life that was difficult — her past, her relationship with Gunner Graves, the death of her brother @lykos — because none of it would matter if she could just keep on moving forward. But time was a devil, and somehow always — always found a way to sink it's claws in. Dragging her back to the very thing that she thought she'd long since moved from.

[break][break] When Gunner Graves enters her apartment, he'll find it exactly as he left it. Clothes haphazardly displayed all over the living space - a sweater here, an undergarment there. Self-made lighting fixture installed into the wall, ones that she'd bought from local thrift stores, that flickered briefly as soon as he switched the lights on. Shoes discarded by the door on a rack that - too - was only half-finished.

[break][break] But instead of the normal routine of Mila clinging to him with messy painter-fingers, or a half-finished piece of fabric; instead of the friendly nudge of Vincenzo's cold nose against his hip; instead of the dazzling gleam of her Hatterene as it prepared psychially prepared dinner for them both —

[break][break] It was silent. An eery sort of silence that would note that something was wrong. That someone had broken in. That Mila was - once again - injured.

[break][break] But none of that was true.

[break][break] But something was indeed wrong.

[break][break] Mila stood in front of the TV in the same way that she had an hour ago, when PENELOPE LIVY's STATE OF THE UNION had first aired.

[break][break] When she'd seen Gunner Graves's face on live television, fighting the very demons that she'd spent a lifetime trying to avoid.

[break][break] Gunner announced his entrance, but Mila didn't move. She couldn't move.

[break][break] "Stay," she murmured, her head dropping against his chest as she closed her eyes.
