of course that only worked so well, especially when a sneaky little cat decided to come and try to rob you. the meowth crept up on him, eyes wide and claws out as it swiped at him to try and get him to drop the bag he was holding. he didn't, but just barely as a pokeball slipped off of his belt instead and landed to the ground. letting out madge which was enough of a deterrent for the meowth for the moment. causing the pokemon to flee off into the grass and gil to be extremely confused about where he was now. with a sigh he looked up at the sky a bit pathetically. "why does this always happen to me?"

gil seemed content to let someone else take the lead over wandering around the festivities. he hadn't been sure what he was going to do anyways so why not let someone else decide? especially if they had more experience with the whole thing. he wasn't really one to question luck when it happened like that. he liked ice cream, so he probably would have made his way over here eventually. all of it was turning up great. though his face flushed pink when he was called handsome. it was something he heard from some of the mothers of the kids he taught but he never really paid it much attention. instead he'd flush pink and wave them off.

"i uh... thank you." he quickly took the popsicle and tried to avoid the booth owner's eyes as he did. he wasn't trying to be rude but compliments flustered him. his uncle had always told him it was because he had a good heart but, he just figured he wasn't really ever going to get used to him. "so you know some of the people working here then?" it was a good change of subject he hoped.

he was relieved that he hadn't ended up making a fool of himself with his wish. after all there were a million important things that a wish could be spent on. he just wasn't that great with thinking on his feet a lot of the time. something that didn't really bother him if he was being honest. "if you can't try for happiness then it's hard to try for anything else i think..."

gil was surprised but grateful that the other man was willing to go back down to the main festivities with him. it meant the ghosts would probably end up leaving them alone. a little bit of happiness already if he did say so himself. "i've never been to a festival this big before! it's really exciting. i live in lilycove so we have other sorts of things there. and before that unova."

it was nice having someone to talk to. "oh, my name is gil hollis! it's a pleasure to meet you!" he felt bad that he hadn't actually introduced himself yet. it was hard to keep up with everything all at once.

he would be lying if he said he didn't jump a little bit when someone spoke to him. gil wasn't expecting anyone to say anything to him up here, especially since they all seemed to be busy with their own things. "just something silly, i wished for happiness." saying it out loud made it sound even more silly really. after all, who wasted a new years wish on something as generic as happiness? there wasn't any specifics to it either... arceus he felt so dumb now. "what about you? what did you wish for?" it was nice talking to someone. after all the ghosts were unlikely to bother two people probably.

it seemed as though things were going to calm down now as he stared at the shrine. now that he was here he wasn't exactly sure what to do. he wasn't even sure why he was here. he didn't have any prayers or anyone to pray to. but right now he just wanted some sort of serenity he guessed. was that something you could pray for? something you could wish for? or maybe he could wish for... friendship? something other than work keeping him busy? a new hobby? were those things that people wished for at festivals? from the couples he had seen on the way up he figured that a lot of them were probably wishing for romance.

not sure of what to wish for he still put his hands together and closed his eyes. with a heavy sigh he simply wished for the first thing he could really think of. happiness.

when the little chiming sound of his phone went off to let gil know he had a text he was pleasantly surprised that it was someone already interested in the quilting club. after all he had been sure it would take him ages to get anyone to give him a call. but now that he had at least one person he felt extremely optimistic about the whole thing. "thank you for getting in touch with me so quickly! it'll be good to have some beginners. i'm actually still inside the store if you want to meet up for more details!" he said it would be good to have beginners but at this point it was just good to have anyone at all really.

finally he reached the shrine after dodging and jumping at every shadow that seemed to cross his path. the occasional firework that scattered across the sky with a loud boom made him feel as though he was going to have a heart attack. normally they wouldn't be so bad but a particularly nasty duskull had decided to pop out at him from the shadows as one went off. hand on his chest as he leaned lightly against a tree near the shrine he tried to catch his breath and still his heart a bit. he felt a bit pathetic but at least no one was really paying attention to him. they had their own prayers to make and thoughts to gather. gil still didn't know what he would be praying for but maybe it would be to not have a heart attack on the way down to the main festival.

he was lost. though that wasn't a surprise to anyone except himself. he'd managed to get himself turned around time and time again. all he'd wanted to do was go and pick up a package in rustboro and he'd ended up turned around. no matter which way he went he still seemed to end up back at the entrance of the caves that he would rather avoid until he had no other options when he needed to go back. everyone told him to just get a flying type pokemon but he didn't want to run the hassle of having it carry him. after all he wasn't exactly a small man. but now he really kind of wished he'd just managed to hitch a ride. he rubbed his face and sighed, once more putting one foot in front of the other, trying to keep the cave to his back.

gil wasn't really much of a religious person but visiting a shrine seemed like it might be somewhat fun. he'd managed to rustle up some borrowed clothing from a shop that wanted to rent out clothes for people who wanted to dress up for the event. it was strange to move in the clothes but he wasn't really going to knock it. it was comfortable though for the most part. at least he could have a good time, especially since things like that were just an occasional thing. still he wondered if he could manage to make his own if he could get his hand on a pattern. though it wasn't the most important thing he needed to be worried about.

what he was really worried about was the fact that ghost pokemon were all over the place. he wasn't scared per say but... he really was if he was being honest. they sent shivers down his spine especially when they jumped out at him. though a lot of them seemed more concerned with other things there were plenty of them that liked to give a scare to the shrine goers instead and he hated it.

a stack of flyers in his arm as he walked into the lilycove department store. he'd been given permission to hang up some of them on a bulletin board inside, to gather interest in his newest community building activity. a quilting circle. after all, what could be better to bring people together than working on something nice? it would give him a chance to give back more after all. with a smile he quietly hummed to himself as he pinned a couple of them to the board. his phone number on the bottom for people to take if they wanted more information. how could any of this go wrong really? he couldn't think of a way.

with all the terrible things that happened in the world it would be good to do some good. and to help others do good too. if this took off like he hoped it would then maybe, just maybe, he'd get to know his neighbors a little bit better as well. taking care of kids was his life's work but sometimes he felt as though it was all he did. even if it was he was sure he was fine with it... but, who knew what branching out would do for him as well.
