the earth spikes prove to be nothing but a nuisance, an annoyance so easily cleared, but it is the last spike that proves to be the needed difference. it explodes underneath his assailant with enough force to lift them in the air, moving the fatal strike of their claws to instead drag at the corner of his lips up to his cheek.[break][break]

with his face almost split open, matias slams a hand into the ground and launches himself into the air, high and far and away before crashing into a nearby tree.[break][break]

he cannot afford to call groudon out here. not when there are bigger fish to fry.[break][break]

but this is his home. his domain. help will soon come. for now, all he can do is to continue to evade; to hell with offense.[break][break]

more pokemon begin to appear, arriving in time to help butterfree contend against the winged king. kantonian pokemon make up the first wave.[break][break]

the makeshift paths he had created that lead out of the cave of origins are no doubt flooded by now, the sea having risen considerably since he first arrived, but those same paths now begin to rise out of the depths, breaking through the surface just enough to connect to the lingering rescue ships.[break][break]

as pointless as it may seem, any stray civilians, league, or even rocket are provided a lifeline. that is the last thing he'll do for them, however, before moving forward with groudon.[break][break]

the cut through the water, able to stay afloat due to the constant push and pull of land, manipulated by both groudon and matias to allow them to move around the great dyna tree, ignoring the carnage left in its wake—he remains unaware of paxton concordas's heroic bullet and of the calrex that lays dead; the same calyrex he had killed in another lifetime—before flanking kyogre.[break][break]

freya morningstar is missing. despite all that has happened between them, he feels more dread than relief at this moment in time.[break][break]

for a moment, he thinks of kyle lopez, wondering if he's done enough to make up for his wrongs. as his eyes stray to rayquaza, he also thinks of Eva Morales, wondering if another life exists out there where they're still together and happy.[break][break]

illeana reyes's arrival is almost enough to turn the tide, except the ocean was never theirs to begin with. they cannot contend with the rising sea, and as kyogre completes its primal reversion, despite all their efforts, he knows that this battle is lost.[break][break]

but with rayquaza's ascension, perhaps this battle can still be won.[break][break]

jayden cross's ruinous words drags his attention back, and as his head whips around, his wrist already in the midst of summoning a wall of earth, his eyes widen with the realization.[break][break]

he's too slow.[break][break]

with no impenetrable armor, his mortal body will easily succumb to the glacial spear. he doesn't bother closing his eyes. if death has come knocking, he will no longer run from it.[break][break]

except it hasn't.[break][break]

Josh Devlin saves him. spares him. sacrifices for him. in that moment, matias cannot feel anything other than confusion.[break][break]

sparing gratitudes for later, he turns away from the battle, looking past footless Alba Evovae bleeding out on the ground, past illeana reyes and Shred, and even past kyogre. all he cares about in that moment is annalise henderson.[break][break]

doing the unthinkable, matias dives into the water, trespassing into a domain he would never want to rule, and finds her. together, they rise out of the water, elevated by a bit of land only to be launched the moment they break through the surface.[break][break]

they land eastward on the final bit of land that still exists at the top of the crater wall. he lays her on the ground, prepared to stay by her side until the very end only to be dismissed moments after she awakens. he can't help but chuckle.[break][break]

"yeah, you're fine."[break][break]

and she's right. if he doesn't further intervene, kyogre will slip free and flood the world, though in the back of his mind, his dream shown to him by father winter calls to him. he resists it easily.[break][break]

"the fight's over, get out of here, anna." he peers down at her, grinning despite the situation. "i got this."[break][break]

leaving her with a kiss, matias launches himself once more, soaring through the skies, tearing through the rain, and lands on the back of groudon, its crimson red scales reverberating with immense power.[break][break]

rayquaza's dragon ascent is accompanied by a strike of thunder. groudon, with its avatar affixed to its nape, moves to block the exit.[break][break]
