The torch of bluish flames met the cackling fist of thunder. Neither sides wanted to give in, especially the Larvesta, who was far weaker compared to the Dragonite. 

     Then it happened, Vesty’s flames were intense enough to overpower the Thunder Punch. In fact it was so intense, that it hurts itself in the process as well. 

     The bug-type Pokemon fell to the ground. ”Vesty!” his trainer’s voice was filled with worry. It was enough for him to attempt standing back up on his six legs, though he struggled greatly. It was obvious to anyone that the Larvesta was reaching his limit before fainting.

    Mason threw out a Poke Ball. A quite feisty Larvesta emerged on the sands and cried out at the opposing Pokemon, ready to battle. Though his owner laughed a little at how the Mightyena interacted with their trainer. 

     ”Sure!” he answered with a smile.

     For some reason he didn’t feel nervous at all. Probably because he had engaged in many Pokemon Battles in the event already, and he was already over the whole ‘freaking out newbie’ phase. Nevertheless, he would give it his all and try to have fun while he’s at it.

     ”Vesty use String Shot, then follow up with a Bug Buzz!”.

     The fuzzy Pokemon shot silky white threads from his mouth and aimed it at the Mightyena. Afterwards, Vesty screeched out loud, releasing red waves that pains the head at his opponent.

    No. Mason refused to give up just yet. It all seemed futile, but the boy and the Larvesta shared a blazing passion deep inside their hearts. They won’t lose without giving their all.

     ”Flare Blitz!”.

     Crimson flames engulfed the Larvesta’s body before it shoots itself like a missile at the charging Dragonite. As it flew, the raging flames turned an incandescent blue.

    ”Tallulah!”, Mason greeted back with a wide smile and a wave of the hand. 

     He quickly rushed to her aid. ”Yeah we definitely have more room for him.” he answered right after he was asked. He simply nodded when she said that they needed to get somewhere safe. 

     Mason asked his Larvesta to use String Shot on the fainted Malamar. Then he called his Milotic to carry the Malamar while he and Vesty took the captured pirate back to one of the boats with some more space in them. 

     Things were a lot easier for him once the people from the League arrived. They basically took over the responsibility and Mason was honestly glad, he was quite drained from all the commotion. 

     Mason followed Tallulah into the boat she was in to catch on things and talked about what just happened. He found it nice to meet her again.

    A smile formed across his face when the woman in front of him mentioned that only he knows when he is ready. It was a strong and endearing sentence to hear. 

     The boy listened to her answer while sipping on his iced latte. Nodding a little here and there when appropriate. He softly chuckled a bit when Tallulah mentioned the bit about protecting people and Pokemon, ”For some reason, I kinda do that too on my journey throughout Hoenn. I found out that as I helped others, me and my Pokemon grew stronger and got more experience. Not to mention the other opportunities that opens up along with it.” he added. 

     It was true, he did learn faster by helping others. The people he had met and the things he had observed all helped him to grow as a trainer and as a person. The boy couldn’t help but to smile as he talked about all this, he seemed genuinely happy.

    The Malamar was knocked out by just one more hit of the Larvesta’s Bug Buzz. The Larvesta didn’t expect the battle to end that fast, so he went on to use String Shots on the pirates. Even the one that Tallulah had already captured.

     Everything was going smoothly for Mason. With the Milotic’s help, everybody remained calm and got onto the lifeboats. The boy also helped in getting the remaining ship crews inside the last life boat and brought it down into the water.

     ”Lily, protect the people.” he said before rushing off towards where the pirates were, and also to check if his Larvesta was okay or not.

    Mason knew that he just saved some people from the water. But the ship was beginning to sink and they all had to come back into the water, in a lifeboat of course. He knew what he needed to do, but he just couldn’t believe it. Mason had always been a timid boy with his shy demeanour and pipsqueak voice. But when the time comes, he can be the torch in the middle of a raging storm.

     The boy jumped off from Lily and on to the ship. It was a mess. Everyone was panicking and did not know where to go. He could hear Tallulah from the other end. But the others who was panicking, the world was distorted. ”Lily, help me calm these people down,”, the Milotic closed its eyes. Soon a green aura vibrates from its body. The aura soothed the heart of the people on the ship. There were less noise, so Mason could speak clearly this time.

     He cupped his hands around his mouth, ”Everybody! Form a line in front each of these lifeboats! Ship crews, help people in and lower them only when it is full! Prioritise the children, the sick, and the elderly first please! Anybody who has a Water-Type Pokemon that they can use please do so, so that we all can get off this ship as fast as we can and leaves more room inside the life boats!”.

     The people soon did as told. Lines were formed and swimmable Pokemon were brought out. He sighed before he grabbed a Poke Ball from his bag. Out from it came a Larvesta. ”Vesty, I need you to deal with the Malamar. Use Ember to fly there, make sure to not get hit by any attacks so you don’t fall in the water. If you do get hit, balance with ember again, alright?”, Vesty shook his head, impatient as he got the chance to battle.

     ”Now keep a distance from them and use Bug Buzz, a couple hits from Bug Buzz will definitely knock that Malamar out,”. Vesty nodded one more time before it jumped off the ship, the tips of its horns then shoot out flames, allowing it to hover in the air.

     Mason stayed there and made sure that everything was in order and that people got safely into the lifeboats. While his Larvesta flew towards where Tallulah and the pirates were. As soon as Vesty saw the Malamar, he used Bug Buzz and screeched, sending red waves towards the Malamar and the divers. When the attack hit, the Malamar and the divers would find themselves having a sharp headache.

     ”Thanks,” he replied to the admiration with a shy grin. Though the next question made him grow a little red from embarrassment. ”Uhh,”, he scratched his head that wasn’t itchy. ”I’ve only started being a trainer a couple months ago, so I don’t think my Pokemon are strong enough to fight in a Gym Battle yet.” he explained.

     The boy perked up a bit when Tallulah mentioned that she was a ranger. He had heard of them but he never knew what they actually are. A small chuckle broke from him as the woman cracked a joke. He might as well ask her while he still has the chance, ”Umm, so what do you do? As a ranger I mean,” he asked in a terrible sentence. He wasn’t really good with conversations huh.

    Mason definitely felt the boat shaking, ”Whoa, whoa!-“ he was thrown off balance, a simple stumble forward made him fell head first towards the water. Luckily for him, a Pokemon came out from his bag.

     A serpent like Pokemon with beautiful scales emerged in the water. Her loud cry was enough to attract attention. The boy landed on safely on the Milotic. ”Thanks Lily,”.

     He couldn’t help but to notice the flame at the end of the ship. ‘Is there a fight going on?’, he asked himself. Then he saw it. The divers had an emblem that Mason wasn’t familiar with. What he knew was that those people and their Malamar must’ve caused the shaking of the ship. 

     “Help!” he heard. Apparently he wasn’t the only one who fell off the boat. It wasn’t hard for Mason to pick between saving those people, and fighting the bad guys. ”C’mon Lily, let’s help those people get back onto the ship. We’ll let that Arcanine handle them for now,”. 

     The Milotic didn’t wait any longer, she swiftly swam around to the victims in the water, while Mason picked them up to rest on her body. There weren’t a lot of people that fell. Which was fortunate. So everybody was safe once Mason and Lily got them back on the boat. 

     But the threat was still there.

     Mason was a bit amused at the sight of the man chasing down his half a dozen dogs in the water. He felt like helping the man out but at the same time Mason didn’t want to take the joy the dogs were experiencing. It kinda reminded him of the many nuances his Pokemon make on a daily basis.

     The boy didn’t really have enough or suitable Pokemon to engage in out of the ordinary battles. He only got his Larvesta and Turtwig. ”Er, a simple one on one battle would do,” he answered.

     Mason was frozen in place whereas his two Pokemon went straight into action to protect their trainer. Vesty’s body was immediately blazing, he and Twiggy ran at the charging Snubbull. The Flame Charge from Vesty and the Tackle from Twiggy hits the wild Pokemon simultaneously. This did enough damage to scare it away.

     The boy didn’t know what to say. He was speechless after witnessing that. He wondered wether he need to train his Pokemon to battle or to be a little more gentle. Or perhaps it was he who needs some toughening up.

     Nevertheless, when the Snubbul had fled, Mason walked up to his two Pokemon and congratulated them with a smile and some head pets. ”Let’s work together next time,”.

     The three of them then trained by using different ways of using their moves. First of all, Mason told Vesty to try using String Shot on himself instead. They managed to pull that after a few failed attempts. Then Mason trained Twiggy to intercept attacks with its Razor Leaf, with Vesty’s Ember as the projectile needed to be intercepted. All in all, they did pretty well.

     As they were busy training, a wild Pokemon lurked in the corner, it felt threaten by their presence and was ready to attack them.
