There's a knock at the door that almost makes him jump. Roman stays rooted, eyes glued to the clock on the wall. Why was his heart beating so fast?

He frowns.

A few seconds later, Roman's at the door with his hand on the handle. Fingers shake, scared to open it but ultimately he does.

"Whateva you're sellin we ain't buyin." he'd heard it in a movie once. It felt -

Wait. Is that a puppy? A Rockruff.

"Woah, no fuckin way."

Emerald hues drift up to the man holding. A face that looks familiar but blurry.

"Dad?"

Roman slumped onto the living room couch with a sigh. Mom had left an hour ago after another series of lectures. "Stop picking fights." she'd yelled as though she was concerned. He winced, fingers running along his bruised lip and swollen eye. He'd given better than he gotten. His chest swelled with pride recalling the scuffle.

"Stupid idiot." he pouted. The kid had deserved the beating after what he'd said, but no one cared about that. The only thing the adults were worried about was the broken arm Roman had given him.

His eyes drifted to the clock on the wall.

Dad would be here soon. That's what mom had said anyway, but Ro wasn't too sure. He'd learned by now not to get his hopes up. That didn't stop the tiny flutter of anticipation in his chest.

He really did want him to be here. At least then he wouldn't have to be alone anymore.
