The lava bubbling inside its funneled recess fills the air with a deep-orange glow of heat. [break][break] Sweat layers his forehead as he walks. A runaway with a backpack full of junk food and soda. It's the cliche beginning to a dark story whose pages are still being written. There's no direction, no journey toward a grand destination filled with splendor and wonder. All Roman knows is that home isn't where he wants to be. [break][break] Neither is Mt.Chimney, but it's too late to go back. Not like his mother would miss him. Bet she wouldn't even notice that he'd left. His dad, boruta maher, wouldn't either. Fuck them both, fuck his dad the most. [break][break] Fingers tense tightly around the straps of his backpack. He'd never been this angry before. So furious that he felt lightning brewing in his chest. A storm of fire raging in his heart that boiled blood. [break][break] Doesn't take trouble long to find him on the path away. [break][break] Thugs, teenagers, with more to prove and lose than Roman had. They spot him almost immediately amongst the orange shadows. [break][break] "Where do you think you're going, kiddo?" the largest, likely the leader, approaches from the front while his two friends gather around Roman from behind. No escape. [break][break] "None of your fucking business egghead." he spits. [break][break] "Ohoho. Got a mouth on you don't, ya?" [break][break] A push, a shove. They bully Roman like he did the other kids in Fallarbor. If he understood the concept of irony, he might laugh. Before Roman knows it, he's on the ground, his backpack in the hands of thugs. They're shaking it, looking for something worthwhile. The youngster grits his teeth, watching a week's worth of pure junk spill out onto the dirt. [break][break] "Junk food? Really kid? Mama didn't send you out here with nothing, did she?" [break][break] A boot kicks him in the chest and knocks the breath out of his tiny frame. He gasps for air, and they kick him again.
