"oh just call me dahlia."

the commissioner accepts the other's composure. drinks it, for within the hallowed space, there is the faintest taste of normalcy. just for one illusory moment.

"oh these?" she says, twisting briefly to view her shoes once more. "they're nothing. they're cheap! i have to admit, sometimes i sneak in an online purchase here and there during a meeting that drones on... for far too long."

a shoelace's knot loosens. one string's aglet scrapes quietly against the floor.

"is there anyone you're worried about in particular? fernando and his dragons?" she asks without laughing. "i know there are... some personalities in the league. it's to be expected. but let me reassure you, just in case."

at kim's whispering, dahlia silently shakes her head, the movement directed by her mouse-like nose or some bewitched wrinkling. "no."

she wonders where the well of social issues has sprung. it was more a geyser, perhaps, erupting suddenly from what seems to be lars' insecurities. although, she sees orion's chastising of olivia making sense too.

for awhile, the commissioner stays silent. her hand idly scratches the head of her stoutland while heat waves are thrown back and forth across the table. it is not because she is tired of everyone's personalities; she just finds it difficult to concentrate.

pulling her hand back to clasp it, dahlia casts cold water. "for now, let's be patient with the development of such an initiative. i understand the issues of surveilance... and yet, we do need to provide some concrete response to Balder Schwartz 's actions and to assure the public."

she frowns, struggling to keep track. fingers run across her forehead, nails like distracting flags to keep the attention away from creased lines.

"for now, let's keep it the monitoring informal. olivia? we'll talk about this further. now, fernando, was this the pressing issue or is there something else on your mind?"

"eight-ball... oh! rory here," dahlia says, "was a family carekeeper of mine." despite her best efforts, her dynasty's affluence still slips through the truths of her word. her world.

seeing the bewear bow reminds her of simpler times. for a moment, she dallies. the grasp she has on bailey's cast causes cognition to stall. apologetically, she snaps her hand away to direct her mr. rime.

"rory! a reflect, please. just in case!" dahlia shouts. "and a psychic to help paddington out."

her pokemon complies, its graceful footwork allowing it to charge forth with an eerie elegance. waving its cane around, a protective screen forms ahead of the bewear. as the design on mr. rime's stomach twirls, the psychic energy rushes alongside paddington's arm.

the snorlax skids back surprisingly enough.

"bailey, do we have a plan or are we playing a game of hariyama-sumo?"

trust. olivia is asking for trust. oddly enough, this is a new experience. a new scene. dahlia realizes that all this time, she has been attempting to win the trust of her colleagues. now, in a dramatic shift of roles, dahlia plays the part she thought she was always meant to play.

"of course you have my trust, olivia." dahlia smiles. she pulls one of olivia's hands into her own, clasping it firmly. "truth be told, it's nice to have a girlfriend around."

she laughs, voice winged with a silvery echo.

"just do your best. that's all i can ask." dahlia says. "the pressures of work can pile up, olivia. it's best to relax when you can." she flexes her toes and her shoes lift. "and for that reason, i'm wearing sneakers today."

"we grew up together." dahlia's voice is tender, like the wrinkled pages of some old library book. "at least, we had similar schooling."

a cough interrupts her story like an spreading ink blot. quickly, her heart beats. she pulls back a curl of hair behind her to rearrange herself.

"we were friends. silas was an odd boy... but we managed to find some shard of similarity, you see." she frowns, recalling the lighthouse. "he blamed me for not saving him. and i couldn't save him again."

she shakes her head of the ghost. yet, the phantom lingers. it surges thickly, like ink. like ink, a stain spreads across the synapses of her guilty conscience.

"but that's over now. thomas, we can forget about it."

dahlia is comforted. if only for a little while. although she feels the unique isolation of living one's own life, she can not help but plea for others to peer into her globe. to pull her away from what has been ailing her, to rewind mistakes, and to clarify the dramatic ironies her play is addicted to.

life can move on without her. dahlia realizes that.

"if you're certain, i don't think i can change your mind." dahlia says, wringing her hands out nervously. at thomas' probing, she complies. "well..."

the memory of that day returns in full colour. she remembers the explosions. the screaming. the remains of her reuniclus, for which she has not provided proper burial for.

"when rocket invaded slateport, i allowed myself to be captured." she confesses. "i wanted to confront silas, you see. i thought i could reach him, but i was... utterly naive. i was an absolute idiot" dahlia lathers enough bravery to face thomas' gaze straight on. "but i learn from my mistakes, thomas."

dahlia's fingers nibble at her cheek. the maneuver is reckless- no, it is absolutely brilliant. as bailey fixes the problem in her own way, she produces another; however, her confidence reveals the next matyroshka doll, for this smaller issue is something an elite four can handle with ease.

"i haven't battled in ages." dahlia gasps, suddenly thrust into a spotlight once forgotten. "let me..."

she fiddles around for a pokeball before casting her mr. rime out on to the pasture. immediately, her pokemon begins to tap dance, the icy cane making light, spritely sounds.

"can you even battle with your cast?" dahlia says, her mr. rime dancing still. "we'll end up in full-body casts if this goes wrong."

the snorlax bursts open- and it lands on two feet. at the quake, dahlia jumps and grabs bailey's arm.

"if i don't know what i got myself into, then i'm not entirely sure that you know too, thomas."

dahlia rests her head in her hand, as she does. she often feels as if the world is on her shoulders: the proverbial atlas. yet, she believes it is a selfish perception. there are others in lower seats that bear heavier weights.

sometimes she wonders why she has entered politics. perhaps, she would have had a more simpler time tending to mudsdales.

"i don't want to question your loyalty. in fact, i'm not." dahlia rubs her wrist tenderly. "but why me? why risk your good standing for my mistakes?" she breathes as a memory briefly overtakes her. "i'm afraid i was overconfident, letting myself get into rocket's hands."
