dahlia practices patience. like a zen-mode darmanitan, she stills herself- but she does not cover her ears. tension continues to crawl through the table. it feeds into her propped elbows from the counter, and the electricity nibbles at her joints.

finally, she feels inclined to speak. her voice comes softly- but it is announced with the firm closure of her laptop screen.

"as orion has just said, i understand it might seem," she offers a flicker of a glance at olivia, "that way lars, but let's be wary of jumping to conclusions, yes?"

she completes every sentence. without pause, the commissioner continues despite the delicate constitution of her timbre. she refuses to let anyone talk over her.

"first, just to refresh everyone." dahlia folds her hands together and sets them on her laptop. "Bailey Cooper , persephone amavi , and even our very own kim cole-essam has had experience dealing with these threats. in fact, the elite four were the most qualified to charge in for the sake of our constituents."

mossdeep beckons from the past. it pulses with triangular traumas and cores the present. in the hollowness, she recounts the presence of the head scientist and ex-councilwoman, freya morningstar , but she edits herself to maintain attention.

"actually, considering the dire circumstances, i would be inclined to applaud the efforts of everyone there, the elite four included."

she raises a finger, shaking her head so that the blond curl behind her ear unravels to her cheek. "and let us not forget the efforts of fernando here."

for now, she glosses over her intoxicated utterance.

"let us not forget the efforts of kyle lopez and evelyn silph by supposing that rocket is somehow 'alive.' rocket is dead. silas. is. dead."

dahlia sighs a ghost from her bodily hearth.

"nevertheless, the aqua initiative, to me, sounds plausible. needed, even. avatars can't run unchecked like Balder Schwartz ."

dahlia shifts quietly- but she is no phantom. her ghostly steps fill physical shape with contradiction. although she is commissioner, she speaks little. practices the stillness of prayer. although she listens with the intensity of some saint behind a confessional's grate, dahlia feels like the scuffed crust of adhesive on a gray wall.

she agrees with the whys. the presence of avatars and the need for research requires a response; however, dahlia makes no reaction. the commissioner remembers the trauma of strangulation. she sees the art of Olivia Abbiati's pearls, and wonders what sketches they hide.

dahlia's eyes flicker toward FERNANDO SILPH, but her frown is invisible. over-saturated by the glow of laptop light and hidden by the screen's wall, the commissioner waits her turn.

she just wishes someone would cover the teddiursa's ears.

dahlia laughs, placing her cheek into the soft nook of her palm. the dents decorating rumble's frame are invisible. they're war medals. they catch the sunlight, shine and refract honour- and yet, they often betray the wounds beneath the surface.

dahlia wonders if bailey has such wounds. the commissioner does not know of her own. like worms, her slateport scars live and wriggle through synapse and neuron with startling shadows.

"well, i'm glad." dahlia says. "survivors. the both of you." she remembers her reuniclus, and her palms begin to pulse with sadness. "now, what is the best way to remove a snorlax, bailey?"

she leads their walk. peeking into the sky, lilycove hill looms ahead like a witch's hat. people gather close to its blue buckle, the snoring behemoth groaning mid-slumber as if it dreams of food. perhaps, sushi.

"brute force? a song and dance? oh! you could blow a raspberry on its stomach like you would a baby's." dahlia scratches her head. office work has sanded the mind. removed practicality in favour for technicality. "in some ways, this seems more difficult than fending off its otherworldly counterpart..."

after kim's reply, dahlia keeps her gaze low. it sweeps like the softest broom across the table. from a leather satchel hung around her stoutland's neck, she retrieves a laptop and opens it. quietly, the commissioner hides behind the mockingly sunny glow of her screen.

a vacation would be nice.

the holographic technologies are provided by Josh Dragomir of raicorp fame. in the flurry of her illness, she recalls having secured such a contract- but little pleases her in the wake of her sullied reputation.

her fingers rest on the keyboard. unpainted nails tap against empty letters. Orion Lykos provides direction, but her movements remain limited.

"if we are to provide a unified public statement, then yes, let's take it one step at a time." dahlia's lips are veiled by the grey edge of her screen. "i don't wish to paint a target on you, olivia, but Balder Schwartz's departure does... require some elaboration."

another gym leader position to fill. she kneads her fingers together and presses her forehead against the bridge.

the door is still swinging when dahlia arrives. she looks around with wide eyes, more perturbed by the wake of kim's grand procession than anything. despite her tenuous hold on the highest seat, she remains composed. steadfast in white.

however, it is difficult to maintain such poise when constantly surveiled. eyes continue to watch her; the public has sunk its fangs into her already.

she takes her seat quietly. beside her, a furry mass of stoutland settles its head in between its paws. the dog will take the minutes. diligently. with snores.

"hello." she utters. her sullen eyes catch a glimpse of kim's heart-eyed carry-on. "cole, we do offer five weeks of paternity leave, you know."

"smart." dahlia discards the murky evidence into the evidence bag. she knows thomas well enough that such items are common on his person.

the peculiarities of each person are held close to her heart, for she finds joy in the mundane whenever she can. however, once thrust upon something supranatural such as this, she finds herself terribly afraid.

as thomas' medical team surround them, her arms loosen. her shoulders fall gently and her lungs breathe with ease for a pink second.

"thomas," dahlia says, before he leaves, "you're adorable with your pokemon. i've never seen this side of you."

she allows herself to be led. it's nice to be on the receiving end for a change.

dahlia whispers thanks. she takes the cloth and carefully sets it on her palm. it's difficult to sop up the ichor, but after a brave breath, she mixes it against the fabric. it's warm, having come fresh from her body.

"doesn't feel good either." dahlia's fair skin becomes paler. wrought with worry, she trails behind thomas with ghostly steps. "thomas, this cloth is most certainly soiled for good. i'm so sorry."

a soft laughing escapes her. at first, her laughter comes airily before it recedes into a croaky, phlegmy gurgle. dahlia swallows with a wince.

"checked out, you said, yes?" dahlia whispers. "you're not a medical professional ontop of everything else, are you?"

the cloak covers her anguish. underneath the fabric, she feels like a widow, the veil of mourning billowing across her face. her head rests on thomas' back, the moment to moment clutching at his clothes expressing her pain.

quietly, under her breath, she murmurs the phantoms of words. from her lungs, she coughs wet.

as they land, her cloaked body like a spectre, she coughs into her hand. black ichor oozes from her fingers.

"absolutely... disgusting." she says, staring at her hands. dahlia hides her fright and keeps her composure, "thomas, do you have a cloth on hand?"

"i'm fine." the commissioner says. "i'm fine. just stress." dahlia reasserts.

-but she presses her head against the flat of her palm as if to bury it deep. her eyes shut watertight; lips a tenuous line.

as lurches toward thomas in a threatening push. it's seemingly uncontrolled like a pendulum on the verge of losing its pivot. dahlia's aura does not falter into treacherous temperatures.

instead, dahlia falls on to thomas, hands grasping his shoulders as she braces against him. "sorry, thomas. just a headache... the ranch sounds... delightful!"

another pang of pain launches her head into the nook of thomas' neck. she seethes, blonde locks cascading across her face as she struggles to keep upright.

"let's hurry then, shall we?" she manages to eke out.

"dangerous comforts." dahlia adds. she swears she can hear the gentle sloshing of the libation at her feet.

firmly, her feet remind themselves of the shape of her shoe's soles. their connection to the ground. as she listens, skepticism brims in her watery eyes.

"hypnosis users? i wouldn't be able to say, to tell the truth. perhaps..."

a cold sweat beads on her face, and the beginnings of a headache.

"thomas, rocket is gone." dahlia's frown rises with the roar of rushing water. "the head has been cut from the proverbial seviper."

dahlia's head feels heavy, and she rests it against her palm.

like an ignited flash bulb, dahlia springs upward with her eyes wide. one hand slaps against her cheek as she stares at the bottle of wine thomas produces.

"oh my goodness, thomas. i was simply joking." dahlia's hand remains planted on her face before it leaves to handle the gift.

carefully, she takes the box of wine. despite its heft, her hands long to crawl and fold. to move about in frantic, antsy loops. frustrated, she eventually sets it on the ground by her shoes.

"that's the thing, thomas." dahlia senses the particular diction of her peer. "i can't quite remember. i may have been busy, or i may have dozed off." she draws a curl of blonde behind her ear. "what are you implying?"
