she gave a light huff, finding herself unable to hold in her distaste. ”involved…”

they had grown apart. her short time in hoenn had only solidified this as fact. she might have been the first to establish distance, but she’d been hurt. since that single attempt in rustboro, he had left her to wallow without much of a word.

he was no longer the best friend she had known. she figured she was no one to him, and there was little he could say at this point to rectify it.

”no. that’s okay.”

she then muttered some encouragement to baobab, hand smoothing against his shoulder as the old bull began to ascend the slope. his passenger groaned lightly, having drifted off to sleep.

teachers had found delta perplexing, and sage had felt them both consequently outcasted, though this had not necessarily been the case. insecurities made her quick to make withdrawing decisions. @ajay had been, perhaps, the only one to be fully trusted.

not to mention, after running into KING WAYLAND , there was no way in hell she was leaving delta anywhere.

it’s really close to lilycove, she thought begrudgingly.

fortree called to her, and the neighboring lilycove boasted one of the nicest beaches, and a harbor that delta enjoyed very much. the fact that they would be in such close proximity to him was mere unfortunate coincidence.

she shrugged.

”i like being in the woods. it’s peaceful. just feels right. and i think it’s a good place for delta.” obscure. hidden away.

it was frustrating, realizing that she didn’t know what she wanted. on one hand, to turn her back on the only family she’d ever known… it was almost unthinkable. on the other hand, the guilt of walking shoulder-to-shoulder with him rotted her spirit.

after several moments of silence—so long that it would almost seem as though she were going to say nothing at all—she begrudgingly informed him, ”we’re moving.” out of the motel, she’d told him they would have left months ago. ”to outside of fortree.”

things could not simply be looked past. her vision of the future was obscured by jutting headstones.

his assurance summoned a nearly sick feeling within her. did he really have the power to make that happen? probably.

”don’t mess with my assignments.”

it was not that she had predicted him to violent, or a bad father. sure, he had always had… something about him. an air of combustibility, maybe, but what had caused sagira to leave in silence had actually been her faith in KING WAYLAND —to protect their region. to stay in the war, and fight.

she had refused to pull another good, much-needed soldier from their ranks, even for their child. she regretted it, but what good could that do now?

lonely. she shrugged and offered a soft, nearly flat smile.

”thanks.”

his next words were met with a light snort and a shake of her head.

”yeah, well…”

her eyes still lingered on the ground in consideration. there were times, more recently, she’d begun to feel like she should have never left him. should have never joined the military, even, as her negligence had ultimately costed so many lives. what might have been, had she opted to settle into the life she’d been given in cinnabar; to cook, and accept the love in front of her?

well, it might’ve burned down anyways… but…

why had she been so ready to chase matias into war? now, she couldn’t leave war. she couldn’t ever fully settle into the role of mother. she asked herself questions that she could never dare utter out loud.

but none of it mattered now.

her smile, if one could call it that, persisted benignly.

”i’m glad you found someone.”
