though delta wasn’t too entirely fond of people, she was an intrepid kid.

sage’s attention was stolen by virizion as she ran up to them. she became almost hyper-aware of her actions around the pokémon, not wanting to offend her in any way. wanting to gain her respect.

“oh, I don’t know. I don’t have a change of clothes for either of us.”

she regarded his smile a moment and then shook her head, looking back out to the lowering sun and taking another sip.

“i’m not sure at times—but you always end up making the right call somehow, so.” a shrug finished her thought.

soon, she got up again, raised the lid, and stirred some things around. smaller vegetables were poured in from a container and steamed upon contact. she didn’t reset it this time, instead continuing to turn things slowly.

her eyes stayed on her cooking.

“we should play a game.”

“tell me… two truths, and a lie.”

Could she? Sagira wondered daily.

She felt a frown tug on her face and checked it with a pressed smile instead.

“Well… there’s nothing physically wrong with her, so in theory, yeah. I guess.”

Hands went to her pockets as she stepped through the sand, eyes never leaving Delta. Eventually, the Magikarp hopped out of the water. The little girl stared at it from afar, blue hair waving in the ocean breeze.

Had everyone ended up here? She supposed many had been displaced in Rocket’s takeover of Kanto. A sad story, but it seemed that the ghosts of her past were real again, and there was a trace of comfort, even with the conflicting pain of her realization.

The smallest smirk crossed her face at his suggestion.

“Okay.”

With all the fire, though, it didn’t look like she needed to do much. Cacturne and Dustox fell back, mostly ineffective in such an inferno.

Cubone’s bone sailed through the air and cut through the fire again, knocking the Zarude in the head before spinning back again.

Though it tried, Zarude was unable to heal itself, and shrieked in the burning flames.

Some kids wound up dead. She knew a few. That was every place.

“Not too bad,” she echoed.

More tame, he said. King was, to her, an uncomfortable energy within the unit. He had that eerie air of combustibility, that she hadn’t yet seen manifest except for hints of it on the occasional mission.

King was trouble. She wasn’t oblivious, but she wasn’t scared either. Not yet.

“Well, that’s good.” She leaned back in her seat, and teased, “Not sure if we could handle you otherwise.”

After a moment she looked back to the horizon.

“What was Vermilion like?”

“Mhm.”

She settled her drink on a flat spot of ground, and got up from her chair, kicking a burnt piece of wood closer to the fire before returning to the iron. A glove was slipped back on and she lifted the lid, stirring with the knife she’d set off to the side, and then lifting the board to scrape off the hardest vegetables over the cooking Combusken. It sizzled loudly. Another stir, and she reset the lid. All the while, she said nothing.

Once finished, she ran the knife through the fire and reset it, and sat back down. The smell in the air evolved, seeping out of the pulled lip of hot metal.

“So, King Wayland. Where’d you come from?”

“They call that an ‘oxy-moron’.”

Taking the cup then, she snorted, blunt. “That’s a bad toast.”

Her cup was then raised briefly. 

“To us.” 

She brought it to her lips, and the taste was bitter and not entirely welcome, but it complimented the fire at her toes like a good recipe.

She didn’t hold on to the same negativity. The quiet was quiet all the way through. Somehow, she could allow the breeze to extract the bad from her very spirit and carry it away, over the hills.

If only that ability would last.

“It’s what you make of it, I guess.”

She looked down when he brought out a bottle. She didn’t drink much, but she knew that liquor was best consumed, not in a pub, but outdoors, around campfire.

“You’re trouble.”

She smiled.

Zarude’s clarity had returned to it, and Sagira was taken aback, looking on in awe for a moment before she shifted back into command.

“Dustox: same thing.”

They’d just have to keep hitting it, then.

The fire was doing the most damage, as could be expected. Zarude cried out in pain before its GRASS KNOT roots extended outwards to ensnare its assaulter.

Sagira’s team continued their same assaults, able to do little else beyond the wall of flames. They were, quite literally, out of their element.

Eventually, the Zarude began to wear down, beating itself in its renewed CONFUSION.

Despite the knot in her own stomach, Sagira called over, “It’s good to see you again, Sam.”

Sage looked over at Matias with a worn expression that no longer knew the concept of surprises around her child.

“Well. Prepare to be further mystified.”

Delta ran… bound…

She was so close, and then…

“Aw, fuck, Sage muttered, before calling out, “Shake it off!”

Magikarp flopped on the wet sand helplessly.

She watched as her daughter rolled onto her back, staying there a moment, before eventually sitting up and maneuvering to push her fish into the water. It swam away gratefully.

A sigh, and her eyes idled back over Virizion as she followed onto the beach.

“She's never said a single word.”

Something like that. She eyed him with the smallest trace of suspicion, but didn’t press.

She’d come to reunite with , but it had turned out that they really weren’t meant to be together, after all. Seeing Sénon, now, gave her a glimmer of hope again. Of longing for companionship, and she tried to push the warm back down; snuff it out under the weight of reality and level-headedness.

To Sage, food was more attention-grabbing than the rock they were about to dig up—not that a meteorite wasn’t interesting.

“Sounds good. Bet you know all the best places, huh?” A smile, and she reached for a pokéball to release one of her oldest partners, but still not one Sénon would have recognized.

“Cacturne—use INGRAIN to loosen the dirt.” She pointed. “There.”

From beneath the plant-man’s feet, thick roots began to push their way through the ground and create a much softer, easier site for extraction.

Sage had never been jealous, or resentful of anything except for maybe the fact that had been taken from her. Of course, now that they were older, there were no hard feelings left. She’d still laugh about it.

He didn’t know many people who went camping? That seemed somehow odd but she didn’t question it.

“Yeah.”

Very often.

“It’s refreshing, and peaceful.”

The smell of firewood, as though he hadn’t smelled it before. She looked over at him, hesitating as she brought the beer to her lips again. It was hard to believe he was this… what was it, even?

“You thought I wouldn’t be good at camping?”
