That…half worked. The Iron Bash ended up hitting sand, mostly, since Aegislash was briefly blinded by what had been kicked up. But on the other hand, the young lady had managed to evade the charge – for now – and had fallen once more.

Fortunately, that was exactly the kind of situation Mirri was born for. This was something they had done before. Maybe not on a beach, maybe not against a pig, but it wasn’t new at all. Hence, Aegislash shifted into Shield Form and prepared a King’s Shield, while Mirri herself rushed towards the dark-haired lady, bonked the middle pig briefly with her sheathed sword. She had not taken it out yet, since this was not supposed to be a life-or-death kind of situation.

Instead, she just created some breathing room as she came to a stop next to the other. Or rather, in front of her. Both Aegislash and herself were clearly standing between the woman and the threat. There, she would extend a hand, intent on helping the other up. “Are you quite alright, my lady?”

The little one squealed when that whip impacted the sound nearby. It did so loudly and scaredly. That was the youngest of the bunch, after all, and the scary stranger had almost hurt it. That was a bit much to bear – and it was also something that the big one really, really did not like to hear. It had just weathered an attack by the steel type it was facing after already Working itself Up to deal more damage. But now that the little ones, having seemingly escaped to safety, were in danger – it suddenly no longer saw a reason to fight the knight.

Instead, it just rushed to the side, leaving a puzzled Mireille behind. “Huh?” That sort of behaviour was strange. But she soon caught herself and started to run after the big pig, alongside her Aegislash. She was a bit behind though, mostly because she did not have the adrenalin rush of a father or older brother trying to protect the little one, so she only arrived in time to see the bull of a pig trying to straight up head-butt another woman on the beach. She didn’t know who that was, but she still needed to do something. “Try to intercept it with a Sacred Sword somehow,” she told her own Pokemon, but knew it was not exactly the fastest for such things. Hence, she called out to the woman “You there, watch out, behind you!” Though that was probably more difficult to process, given that the third, the middle pig, was in the process of Belching at Camille.

What lofty titles. Granted, they were ones granted by merit, not birth, so she did not at all mind them. But Mirri was still a bit miffed, in the back of her mind, that she was considered a trainer when it came to ranging, despite her experience as a knight. It didn’t shine through to often, since she had manners, but it was still often there to her own dismay. Regardless, in that moment she only briefly thought about those titles, but dismissed that all too quickly.

The situation kind of called for being serious about all this. “I am. And while I agree that it is stable, I am a bit worried. A traumatized person in an area that might contain wild Pokemon might be a recipe for disaster. Those who already lost a lot are often prone to feeling they have nothing to lose. Or feel like they need to alleviate their powerlessness.” Naturally, the last two sentences were here paraphrasing a book, rather than something she had come up herself. Still though, she deemed that to be a reasonable thing to worry about in this situation.

Regarding his question, she released her own Corviknight. “I have my own,” she simply stated, returning to making short statements once more. Really, it was probably for the best. She could have talked about preferring riding Pokemon that were hers, but that would be pointless. So, she did not. Not talking was sometimes a decent choice, in her estimation.

Yeah, Mirri had just kind of wandered off. Because that was what she did when arriving at a new place to train. Others might still need to find their bearings, but she was used to those sorts of things. Sure, she could have helped, but that would only deprive them of the experience they had come here to gain. And no way Mirri would be rude like that. No, she knew what to do herself, so she had set out between the trees already.

And she had swiftly found what she was looking for, namely a set of wild Pokemon that she was ostensibly there to fight. A set of two Lechonks and one Oinkologne to be precise. At the sight of her Honedge, the two Lechonks just dashed away, not wanting to fight a ghost – and they rushed straight towards the beach, uncaring who or what they might run into or run over. In fact, when they saw that girl on the beach they just blindly and madly dashed towards that one, not wanting her to summon any more ghosts while Mirri herself was starting to face off against the big one.

What a terrible, probably preventable loss of life. Mireille was still a bit saddened by the very premise of this mission. Multiple people dead, one still in peril – that was a bad outcome one way or another. As a knight, she always wanted to prevent such things from happening to begin with. Granted, she knew that she could not be everywhere and that not everything could be prevent. Accidents just happened. There was no way around that. It was saddening still, yes, but it was a reality to accept and to handle. Which was where rangers came in. Or anyone decent should, really. But most could not. Or would not. She could and would, so she had set out right away when she got notice.

Hence, she had come out here. Being closer by chance than the one sent to supervise her, she would be waiting near the coordinates specified on top of her Mudbray, she had been going up and down the road where the guardrail had been broken, just in case there was anything important to see there. However, there really was not, so she was on her return journey when someone arrived on top of a Jolteon. Which really felt weird, since she had always thought those too small to carry a person. “Good day, are you ranger Devilin?” Mirri was quite sure he was, but she figured asking first would be a good start anyway.

Aegislash. The Pokemon of knights. At least it was as far as she was concerned. Ever since the middle ages, this Pokemon had fascinated the people, being as the opposition of valiant knights or their trusted companions. Some even said that knightly souls unable to find peace were the prime candidates to become Honedges and such.

Mireille was not quite certain whether that was true or not. But it mattered little. She loved this species, and she had brought out her own Honedges to socialize a bit with their brethren. Uno was sparing with another, Duo apparently communicating with a small group of them. She did not understand, but her Pokemon seemed to like it. Which was enough to let her lean back and enjoy the spectacle, though she always remained vigilant. These were ghosts, possibly not too keen on the living after all. Or maybe she could add another to her collection. It was impossible to tell so far. But she was ready for whatever might come next.

Fortunately, it was not too difficult to discern the fake. On one hand, it probably seemed presumptuous for her of all people to simply assume that she could tell them apart. But on the other hand, she was quite an expert on awkwardness. And this boy did not seem awkward at all. Too calm, too…vapid, in a way to truly express what he was trying to say. No, this one most certainly was not the same as she.

Hence, Mirri’s eyes immediately narrowed on the parroting boy, keeping her own Pokemon at the ready to attack, if necessary. However, since her partner had already taken the most active role in approaching those boys, Mireille would let her handle the talking. It was never good to undermine someone else’s authority right away, especially when they so loudly called for information.

A professional? Well, maybe that was what she was. Though she would never call herself it. But that was just her ironically low self-esteem at work. As someone who had lived and worked this duty for as long as she could think back, Mirri probably was one of the most qualified for protecting damsels. But she never took anything for granted. Which, sadly, led to her being rather coy about matters. “Well, professional might be a bit of a stretch,” she hence replied, lightly scratching the back of her neck.

Not that her confidence was gone, of course. She still utterly believed that she could succeed in this. “Anyway, Sirfetch’d Brick Break on the enemy. It is big enough that accuracy should not matter, so put your back into it,” she ordered, with the golden knight surging forward right away, towards the fiery hoodlum. If that worked, she would follow it up with a Pokeball.

It kind of felt like a bonding moment, despite the other’s lack of a response. Or maybe more so because of it. Sometimes, that silence spoke more than words. Especially when she could see in someone’s face that they understood. There wasn’t a rolling of eyes or other irritation, but rather a benevolent calm. One that she could enjoy. Mirri was not the greatest talker. She just liked being around people quietly, too. A day could be spent just reading books alongside another in her youth and it would be the most amazing experience to her, really.

This moment though was cut short. Regrettable, maybe but wholly understandable. They were on a mission, not on a date. Not that she would ever presume to just be on a date, of course! Mirri inwardly harrumphed, then nodded. “Born ready. Lead the way, um…Callie.” It was still weird to call this one by her first name so brazenly, but it was preferred. So, she simply adjusted. It was not too difficult, so she would please. Simple as that. Her own Pokemon returned with a brief whistle, ready to follow wherever that Fletchinder had found a lead on their target.

“In part,” she started to reply, thinking about home while the Pokemon were scouting and they were surveilling. It was surprisingly rare, really, to be asked something like this. Alola, Kalos, even Kanto were exotic places to the Hoennians, but most seemed to be treating Galar with a kind of knowing ignorance, as if they already knew most they needed to know about the place to begin with and did not need to do further research on the matter. There wasn’t quite the curiosity about the place, in her own admittedly limited experience.

“We do have a police force that functions similarly to here in many ways. But there is also a long-standing tradition of knighthood, especially among the noble houses. Patrick of Strudwick put it like this ‘Chivalry is an expression of feudal duties. Those who ruled are obliged to protect those they ruled’. And I guess a lot of that just survived to the present day. My family still lives off of the fruits of our forefathers, so we keep the tradition of service alive, too.”

“I have been told so, at least,” she replied, a bit awkwardly. Usually, the word was preceded by ‘hopelessly’, but she was well aware of it. When you structured your life at least in part after romance novels, that was just something you lived with, really. Plus, in her opinion, being a romantic was not a bad thing at all. Those without romance in their lives were missing out, after all.

Though….admittedly….she still had not actually experiences romance a lot. Mirri was just well-read, really. But at least she knew a thing or two about her job. Following the other casually, she did scan every face they came across to see if there were any obscurities. “Necessities, certainly. But I sometimes feel I could be more efficient without, you know? A lot of the time it is just all routine. Reports should just be for things worth reporting, in my opinion.”

It always felt weird for a new person to call her by that nickname. Yes, it was the most common one for others to use, that was true. But it was still infrequent enough to be odd and kind of special each time. Fortunately though, she was sufficiently used to that to not break out in awkward blushes.

Just this time. “I heard something like that, too. The eyes, the eyes, they are supposed to be the windows of the soul, so they have trouble replicating those.” That was a bit flowery, so naturally it came partially from a book. But it was also the information she had gathered from some cursory research beforehand.
And since her partner sent out an aerial scout, she had her Corviknight join in so the two of them could cover more ground from above. “It is going well so far. It is quite similar to being a roaming knight, just more…structured, in a way. And more paperwork. A lot more paperwork.” Which she decidedly did not like, causing her to sigh slightly. Sure, it was more proper this way. But she still did not like it.
