he raises a brow at the assumption, but chalks it up to their first meeting.

"just because i had johtian food when we first met doesn't mean that's all i eat," he quips in his usual whiny tone.

it did remain in his table, uncovered, throughout their first meeting. he assumes it did skew the perception since it smelled distinct compared to the other food hoenn has to offer.

he joins him at the table, taking a gander at the selection.

"but they are a favorite. did you know?"

green accents on the dishes were observed. berry motifs were tacky, but kyle likes tacky more often than not. eyes dart from one dish to another, waiting for noah to make the first move to break his indecisiveness.

what had originally been a pokemon he intensively looked at was now nothing but a beast with labels assigned based on surface level information. type:null was now just an ultra beast killer whose capabilities were unknown in his eyes.

although knowledge of the past has been long gone, the reaction and wit of the anxious has not dulled.

a pokeball from his waist is flicked forward, bouncing from the type:null and deflected in front of him. the sphere enlarges, releasing the pokemon inside.

"bulwark!"

a gouging fire leaps in front of the attack. the paradox pokemon prepares protection against the type:null's talons, turning its burning bulwark ablaze to fend off the attack.

a paradox for a paradox. the theory of using an abomination clears out allegations of being connected with the drk triad at the very least.

"i don't even know you!" if you're acting so familiar with me, why are you doing this, he wanted to ask.

he opens the door to his office, greeting noah who had visited after telling him he'd be spending this year's halloween in slateport.

"shouldn't you be, i don't know, doing this in your city?" he nonchalantly says as a hello.

he leads him in and goes back to work, motioning noah to the back of the unit where the kitchen was so he can serve himself.

kyle continues on the last minute decorations on his office's interior after spending the entire day doing the facade. despite not doing much, kyle has surprisingly done decent given time and energy he spent for the season.

"i thought you would have gym leader duties."

the last of the cobwebs to block off the rest of the room from the entryway makes a nice veil to hide the rest from plain view, giving kyle less space to decorate without compromising the experience of those who dare peek deeper in his abode.

noah's words causes him to tense up once more, squeezing the hand that held his. the other one tries to cover his face, red from hearing things his ears weren't used to hearing.

"you can't say t-that!"

being forward hasn't always been his play. he was too used to working in the background, facing people where they meet in the middle and trying his best to navigate the conversation with the best possible speech options.

noah was different. there's no playing safe with him, and doing so just puts him in a worse spot.

"w-we can k-kiss later..." he whispers, flustered and embarrassed. he doesn't necessarily appear to hate being doted on, however.

"do you want to help me with grocery first?" kyle asks. "i mean, if you're going to make me a shake, and we'll be hanging out at home where i don't have anything, and..."

as he listens to his words, he starts to realize how it sounded. like someone who gets someone else to do their work for him and multitasking on a time allotted to be spent with them.

noah's perspective might differ, but he still was an acquaintance in kyle's.

"b-but only if you have time!" he corrects himself. "you're, like, a gym leader right? that means you're always busy and stuff with definitely not dying in the front lines and, well, i guess what i'm saying is that..."

excuses comes after as always, trying to correct what had been carelessly said.

he supposed it makes sense. he did just get out from his check up and he can only imagine the amount of things the doctor would prohibit him from doing. they will take it easy today.

still, he sighs.

"the hospital definitely doesn't count as a date." he shakes his head. "dude, i can't have the first time someone asked me out be associated to where he almost died."

he looks outside the bathroom, and then motions for noah to get out. while it wasn't a conversation they can have in public, the bathroom was no place for any romance either.

at least, not in kyle's head.

"i-if you want my apartment, i g-guess we can." he forces himself to look back to noah, still red from the supposed advances and the romantic undertones he wasn't used to feeling. "i...i like it simple anyways."

an arm around his neck invokes a sense of childishness that makes him yearn of the past that people deemed imaginary. he leans his head on noah's arm as thoughts fill his head, and the gesture of tapping out slowly devolving to soft caress.

like a roller coaster, ups and downs of their dynamic break the solemn moment right after he did the same to noah.

"my place?" he repeats in disbelief, hands falling to his side as noah frees him. "i thought we're going out since you asked for a date."

relationships weren't high on his priority. kyle never went on a proper date before, unless he should count experiences of being a third wheel or friend dates.

intricacies of what can count as one are defined by what was stereotypical in kyle's eyes. he imagined movies, or lunch dates or shopping. he mentally prepared himself to waste his free day on populated places.

he thought vanilla hanging out comes after they solidify the relationship better.

the kiss on his hand causes kyle to flinch, but not enough to withdraw it from noah entirely. instead, he flushes red.

words that he often dismisses as sweet nothings had better impact on him when devoid with exaggerated intensity. it was soft, sunny and warm, almost to a degree that he would consider pure.

conflict of reality and kyle's cynical and pragmatic perception makes it difficult for kyle to feel empathetic to something he does not understand, but he accepts it nonetheless.

"i-i'm not," kyle quips back. "it feels awkward being in a hospital room." he looks around. "in a hospital bathroom on top of that."

he turns back to noah, accidentally meeting his eyes. after hearing those words, he quickly pivots his sights to the door, trying to hide rose tinted cheeks from the other.

"sh-should we head out now that w-we have your phone? l-let's not linger too long!"

he couldn't read the intent behind. he expected something, but got another entirely different thing instead. the raised brow and an open jaw leaves little to hide his thought.

despite being the one who suggested it, kyle was the one left surprised.

"sh-should i call them now?" kyle asks, worried. "y-you're not a-actually sick, right?"

a hand is placed on kyle's own neck to gauge his temperature, and to be used as a reference when he leans forward to place the other on noah's forehead. he didn't feel sick, but the warmth is nice.

imagination quickly gets dispersed as he instinctively follow noah inside. a hand holds the door open as he watches noah reunite with his phone.

"oi! i'll have you know they taught us basic self-defense at the force," he retorts. "i didn't pay much attention back then, but still."

he expects another show of confidence, playful arrogance that can only be described as a social medium to clear the air and keep it light. instead, he is met with a moment of stillness.

kyle tries to peek from behind noah, but decides to ask him instead.

"hey? are you okay?" he asks. "do you need a doctor?"

the typical places to lose valuables are often the places that can be found by backtracking. though he doesn't know where noah might have placed them, kyle searches where a typical patient would.

"a ring fighter?" kyle echoes as he tries to look away from the flex. "like wrestling or mixed martial arts?"

he does seem like the type.

still, kyle couldn't imagine a jock having a relationship with a nerd interested in games and novels like him. it just seemed so cliche and the trope just felt like something a person who hasn't dated would fantasize.

"do you take lessons in your gym?"

kyle lifts the pillow on the hospital bed since it's where he often loses his phone every morning. he finds nothing.

apologetic smiles and humble nods were offered to the hospital staff that got passed by in their way of trespassing.

kyle is the type to go slow, contrasting the rush that noah displayed. contact between their hands was a product of being swept by the flow, invoking a rush of red on his expressions.

he doesn't expect it, but he supposed he should.

by the time they reach the room, kyle appears agitated. something that doesn't seem like a big deal to the gym leader gets him flustered. familiarity was one thing, but to take the reins was something else.

"y-you use stickers?" kyle finally speaks, joining the search. "that's cute."

unlike noah, kyle doesn't have much to say. he isn't versed on making conversation, and as much as he feels like he doesn't want to tank the date, he can't help that he's just going for a ride on noah's coattails.

"you faced the rocket boss?" kyle attempts in the midst of the search. "you must be, like, strong. those guns aren't just for show, huh?"

he quickly finishes his coffee down, almost choking as he gulps everything.

"y-yeah!" he answers fast, slurping the last of the iced coffee and brushing the back of his hand against the trickle from the corner of his lip.

the cup is begrudgingly left at the table after seeing everyone else do it.

"did they hit you hard on the head?" while framed as a joke, it sounded like genuine worry. "i'm not sure if i can forget about my phone."

not because it's an electronic that he plays games on, but because it's almost quintessential for every day use... or maybe he should just admit to being chronically online.

kyle follows noah to where he had his appointment.
