self-preservation had always been one of the traits kyle was most proud of. it's often accompanied by embarrassing acts very few on hoenn would even consider doing, but given that none of them were practical in this situation, his mind is left processing other available options.

there had been no time to enjoy the food, and no time to talk to the person he came here with.

addled, he is left shifting his eyes around from one word on the wall to another. noah's voice grounds him back to reality, or what seemed to resemble as one.

"o-okay!"

he starts to forget small things about the person he entered the room with, but gut feeling tells him to stick close. sentiment lingers even as names and faces fade.

entering the room with noah, he is greeted by artifacts that an ordinary person wouldn't be interested in. he starts to flip through the pages on one of the journals, given that courtesy is thrown out of the window the moment they trapped visitors inside.

"you're not leaving me through all this, right?" he asks noah, his attention held by something else. he isn't sure if anything strange will happen while he's busy snooping.

kyle ended up wearing a similar costume with noah.

a little bit of makeup, some gag accessories received from secret santa at work years ago due to his reputation for liking dog pokemon, and the most tattered clothes he's had for being too frugal all made the impromptu outfit for halloween possible at a short amount of time.

it felt bare and cold, even in hoenn's climate, but noah seemed to enjoy watching him change into it and match.

the greetings from children who went door to door for candy came and went. his place might be secluded, but kyle knew it only takes a few visits from the right kids to spread the word. he did know the right brands to minmax the price and taste.

as it starts to get late for trick-or-treating, one last visitor rings their door.

"hey noah!" kyle shouts from the door to his living room, which doubles as the reception area for his business. "come here!"

a girl with a paper fortune teller awaits them, smiling with glee at her new customers.

"ugh..."

kyle doesn't want to answer.

he approaches the children with the aid of his deputy's pokemon, steering them away to reduce any risk of the wild pokemon retaliating. the mabosstiff follows closely behind, but when it starts to show signs of growling, kyle holds his hand against its face to stop it.

"we can wait for them to wake up, i guess. we really can't leave them while we go get help."

a silent 'excuse me' is mouthed as he enters the premise. he sits on the wooden floors right beside the sleeping children and whips out his phone. his fingers tap away at the screen as if writing a message.

"the more fun option would be to wake them up, but then you have to follow it up with a word from their parents. i'm not really in a mood to deal with rebellious children."

he makes himself comfortable and lies down on the floor. soon enough, the typing motion on his phone stops and is replaced by a single hand holding the screen above his face. kyle takes out his earbuds afterwards.

"besides, this place is quiet. airflow is nice and it's a bit away from the main road so smoke doesn't reach here. it's really a good hideout."

it starts to become obvious that kyle just plans to laze around.

caught by the softness of his bed's cushion, he is left discomposed in his own home. his mouth twitches for a response, but there's little to be said when pushed in a precarious position.

"i-i-it's really difficult for me to say t-t-this..."

kyle forces to push the voice out of his throat.

he feels uneasy. this was out of his comfort zone. he was supposed to be a nobody who only cares about his hobbies, working a nine to five while letting his life waste away.

kyle did nothing to deserve this. he hadn't even courted noah. yet, the greed in him is willing to take it nonetheless.

"b-but-" he swallows once more. "i c-can see h-how you had me f-falling for you."

a percussion plays in his chest.

his hand touches skin. warmth floods from one source to another, accompanied by the feeling of noah's heartbeat resonating with his.

emotions were on the rise for both of them, but the reasons behind either of their heightened feelings contrast each other.

he smiles as he looks down to his feet. "it feels awkward, you know. you're carrying a lot of this relationship."

the contrast compliments rather than clash.

his hand slides down noah's physique until their hands dangle in suspension. he tries to look at noah, but tensions couldn't kill his fluster. regardless, he remains still amid the sea of red in his face.

"i... i want to know more of you." he swallows. "c-can you make it less of me and more of us? j-just until i'm comfortable! y-you look like you h-have fun doing what you do anyways, s-so i don't want to, like, stop it."

he takes out his phone, texts someone who invited him in the party, and then turns to the crowd to wait for a reaction. when they stop and glance at where kyle was, they flinch but mellowed down the moment kyle waved bye.

the reaction was subtle, but was easily ignored.

"well, there's a barbecue place a few blocks away." he rests his arms down once his message was received by those at the gathering. "do you mind walking a bit further away?"

wary eyes remain on their backs. people know of the relationship between the two-- more precisely, matias' role in kyle's transition from one phase to another.

the electivire, at the very least, start to trust its trainer's judgement and grow less cautious of matias.

"because i'm doing something else," kyle informs navy.

he turns at the slateport waters, staring at the glistening blue that stretches far to the horizon where navy's new home was situated.

"a kid asked me to find their feebas after they lost it here at the beach. paid me a week's worth of allowance for it. i can't really leave it behind gyarados-infested beaches, can i?"

kyle doesn't need to mention the risks. a small domestic pokemon out in the wild has little to offer for self-defense against its predators, especially for its species.

still, kyle takes the time to talk to navy over getting himself back to work. it's clear that kyle had been caught up shirking his duties while talking about his integrity.

"i'll have to return the deposit if i fail, and there's this new game coming out that i really need..."

"n-no! children are coming in! i-i can't be inappropriate!"

he knows children do not mind. those that are mature enough to stare at a bare body like noah's wouldn't be out trick-or-treating, and would instead be out catching ghosts from stories that seem to be sensational in the internet.

correcting him forces his eyes on the supposed costume, or the lack of thereof.

"y-y-you should get this on!" he takes a shirt from his wardrobe and throws it to noah. "d-d-did you a-actually go here shirtless?"

the shirt he gives noah was an old black shirt he wore on the force during his training all the way back.

he could've stripped before knocking on the door, but the thought of it somehow made him more flustered than the alternative. he turns back to his closet, hiding his expression while he calms himself down.

his heart remains wanting to escape his chest. fear fuels his adrenaline enough to ignore inhibitions. to talk so freely and casually didn't make sense, but he indulges nevertheless.

a little give-and-take is needed to survive in the battlefield.

"i-it won't be the strangest thing on hoenn. if a guy like me's top champion, then this region's cooked."

kyle matches zev's steps. one foot forward from the god general was one foot back for kyle. as his gouging fire stands its ground against the barrage of attacks, kyle shouts a command that unleashes its potential.

"sunny day!"

like the king of the day, the sun becomes more than just a symbol. gates were opened and more paths are made available with its light.

the attack razes the vegetation. if kyle cared about nature enough (that he'd change professions to ranger), he would have been more affected.

kyle kicks himself away from the gyarados as the claydol's move is fired. his own pokemon's effort to move its trainer out of the way pushes him to the ground, though he is quick to get back up to his feet.

they may have readied themselves for an attack right after taunting it for a fight, but indecisiveness slows the pokemon down from moving.

quick movements from the gyarados allows it to only get itself grazed, its scales on its side singed. it moves in, waiting for its trainer to make a move of his own.

"power whip!"

gyarados closes the distance, slamming its tail on the claydol to push it down the ground.

a reflection of who he is, hideo says.

deep down, there's denial that he would have gone the route for optimistic reasoning. he could argue that he just follows a pattern for these kinds of stories and that his solution was merely him following an optimized path for a good narrative.

kyle smiles. he supposed, in a way, the gym leader was right.

"of course."

he receives the badge from hideo, raising it high up to where it can refract the light filtering from a nearby window. it was the first badge he had in a while, and probably one that he has had a reason to personally pursue.

he does like stories.

"thanks for accepting my challenge by the way. it's really difficult to get into queues nowadays " a combination of complications prohibit him. there was no need to clarify given that hideo was also part of the scene. "feel free to reach out if you need help with your gym."

a vague offer, but a sincere one nevertheless.

he lands from jumping with his hands outstretched to reach a difficult to reach area, sticking the adhesive behind a star decal onto the wall. immediately, he turns to noah.

"what? no!"

he wipes the dust covered fingers on the hem of his shirt, leaving behind the box of decoration. he bought too much and overcrowding the main exhibit would only serve to make the display tacky.

"who would wear a body suit for halloween? maybe you should wear a body suit."

as the words leave his mouth, imagination runs wild. flustered, he hides the rush of red as he looks away from noah and then heads to the bedroom. he leaves the door open as an invitation to follow him to a private part of his home.

"it's a trick question. i'm just recycling my costumes from previous years."

some of them were actual costumes he had worn before, though the memories attached to them may differ from what may have been shared between him and the record of history of this world.

"i have to finish this first," kyle answers noah as he dusts his hands off after hanging the last of the cobwebs. "slateport kids are brutal compared to verdanturf kids. they judge you extra hard when you're the worst in the block."

kyle was the type not to get himself affected by judgement, but it was apparent that he was enjoying his part of a childhood festivity over responsibilities as an adult.

more importantly, he tries to get his eyes off of noah's costume.

"do you want to guess which one i'm dressing up as?"

kyle continues to move from one box of decorations to another, this time sticking glow-in-the-dark decor for when he dims the lights. part of him is tempted to move them to his bedroom once the season of trick-or-treating is over.
