kyle ended up wearing a similar costume with noah.

a little bit of makeup, some gag accessories received from secret santa at work years ago due to his reputation for liking dog pokemon, and the most tattered clothes he's had for being too frugal all made the impromptu outfit for halloween possible at a short amount of time.

it felt bare and cold, even in hoenn's climate, but noah seemed to enjoy watching him change into it and match.

the greetings from children who went door to door for candy came and went. his place might be secluded, but kyle knew it only takes a few visits from the right kids to spread the word. he did know the right brands to minmax the price and taste.

as it starts to get late for trick-or-treating, one last visitor rings their door.

"hey noah!" kyle shouts from the door to his living room, which doubles as the reception area for his business. "come here!"

a girl with a paper fortune teller awaits them, smiling with glee at her new customers.

noah rolls off the couch. though the night is still young, the man feels like a gastrodon peeling off a driftwood after a sizzling siesta. perhaps, war has made him this way. surviving hoenn and all of its babeldom.[break][break]

he evolves to two legs. stumbles across the room and walks awkwardly past corners.[break][break]

"who's that? you know her?" [break][break]

the fortune teller is let inside, and immediately she lifts the paper fortune up like a flower.

"someone from the neighborhood," kyle answers. he doesn't actually know her full name and has only heard nicknames from other neighborhood kids.

when she looks at kyle, he defers him to noah with a motion of his head.

"she said she's here to tell my fortune, but i told her she can do that some other time." he places a hand on noah's shoulder. "but since you're not from around here, i thought we might as well let her read yours instead."

she smiles with kyle's explanation, relieved that she doesn't have to say all of that to a stranger.

in her little witch costume, she stares up to noah readily. it's a childish game, but there was no harm in participating unless he, specifically, was taking a nap. noah is fine.

"come on. ask her something," kyle invites.

the gym leader scratches his back, the fur mantle of his werewolf garb shifted askew. he examines the witch and her little fortune with a skeptical glance (just a gamesy toying and performance, nothing serious) before he lobs his query.[break][break]

"am i on the right track?" noah asks. he peeks a glance at kyle.[break][break]

he grows self-conscious—and it is not because of his scantily clad costume. it's a vague question. he's quick to follow-up, but there is only abstraction.[break][break]

"for love. for the doing the right thing."

she registers the topic, but then looks back again to kyle.

he can only scratch his head as he reads her. in front of an imposing adult of more than decent musculature, fear can easily mix in with her social anxiety. a sigh follows a decision.

"let's do red."

she flips her paper origami once every letter, and then reveals four numbers written on each flap.

"then one."

she turns it to a different page, revealing another set of numbers.

"then eight."

seven turns follow kyle's choice. it opens in a position where the numbers 3, 4, 7 and 8 are shown. she raises it up to kyle, who then turns to noah.

"your turn to pick," he tells him, a finger pointed to the art project of a device.

at this point, kyle hasn't realized what the question was, having tuned it out in favor of trying to remain calm in front of his guests, forgoing logic for composure. implications of noah being inside his residence did made him feel things.

the paper fortune teller opens and closes repeatedly like a squawking trumbeak. as noah views the numbers flicker about, he can not help but imagine them as calendar dates being lost to time.[break][break]

"oh, right." [break][break]

noah strokes his chin in thought as the girl keeps her instrument of divination open. though the number is one of death and curses, intuition guides him to it.[break][break]

after all, death had torn them apart. death had brought them together.[break][break]

"four."[break][break]

as the teller lifts the paper, noah does not realize he is leaning against kyle's arm.

kyle freezes, evidently affected by the weight on his shoulder. the act of trying to look cool and composed crumbles as he appears tense and nervous in front of their guest instead.

perhaps it's the sight of someone looking more distraught than she was that the girl finally found it in her to speak up. she stops trembling as she flips the flap and reads out the fortune behind the number.

"flattery will go far tonight," she says proudly.

after reading their fortune, she says her thanks and waves goodbye.

kyle remains on the door, eyes following her back down the stairs of the apartment, as noah's act of bridging the distance between them leaves him anxious for when they were left alone in the room once more.

it wasn't in a bad way at least.

"l-looks like she's the last visitor," kyle tells noah.

technically, it wasn't his fortune but noah's, but he feels inclined to work with it nevertheless. without turning to the gym leader, he nervously makes a comment. "i haven't mentioned it, but, uh, i like your costume. it is very, um, flattering."

after a heartful thanks, noah bids farewell to their little diviner. her recitation of the fortune echoes in noah's mind as the door closes to a tiring slateport.[break][break]

"i've always wanted to try a costume like this out. shows off my charm points, right?" [break][break]

after all, it had been kyle's suggestion a year ago. before his passing. before the ill reunion between body and altered identity.[break][break]

"i like yours too." noah grabs kyle by the arms. "but a costume's meant to be taken off eventually."[break][break]

but noah does not think of innuendo. he refers to kyle's alter self. this persona that is simultaneously him and not him. if noah could, he would tear away at this outer casing, this outer shell. strip the rind and find the inner fruit so ripe with the original self.[break][break]

however, the gym leader can now see that this too, this kyle is... kyle. his shyness. his easily flustered heart.[break][break]

"do you remember anything? anything at all?" noah finds himself speaking under his breath, a quiet muttering like a halloween spell.

"it doesn't feel like i have forgotten anything," he tells noah.

they have been reformatted after all. the same file size remains, regardless if the content has been retroactively changed. every single day has occurred in his head, though the manner of which they have been edited makes it certain that contradictions were smoothed out.

still, they exist.

the door is closed while his other hand holds noah's. he squeezes, mentally preparing himself for what comes out of his mouth.

"c-can you stay friends with me?" he asks noah. "i-if it turns out that i really don't belong in this world. if your husband really does come back."

he had always been independent. he prided himself in being able to do things on his own. to willingly ask for help for a task he doesn't know the solution to was a sign of defeat, but it felt different with noah.

it felt strange to have someone offer their entirety to him, and kyle is here to take the offer.
