Ceri laughs when Nomi calls the sample collection process “a bit repetitive...possibly even boring”, shaking her head. ”Sure, collecting samples can suck sometimes, especially some of them when you have allergies like mine, but that’s just the start, you know?... Analysing the samples? Comparing them? Using them for experimentation? Arceus, Nomi, if I could tell you about some of the things I’ve been doing…”

She goes on about it as she works, clearly as excited about it as she is proud. This is where Ceri thrives, the study of toxins and their effects is just the start. After all, there’s a reason why her grad studies have been focused on biotechnology – she craves progress, advancement, and discovery.

It’s when passing by a narrow alley that Ceri pauses. There’s a sound coming from the trash cans that lie by the wall, overflowing with black bags, and after a few seconds, that sound reveals itself to be a likely very hungry Stuntank.

She knows better than to disturb it.

After all, its spray is nothing short of noxious, being the result of liquids fermenting in its stomach until becoming toxic and all. No thanks, she’d rather not smell terrible.

Of course, she also knows they can spray from over a 160 ft away, so she quickly gets out of there before the wild pokémon notices her.

”Hmmm…. I think I like my reasoning better.” She teases when hearing that Cillian Quinn actually just likes pirates. A light laugh escapes her then, cheerful and carefree. ”Just kidding, obvs. There’s nothing wrong with a classic. It’s why I’m a witch!”

Well… That and other reasons, but mostly it’s the fact that she has always really loved that whole aesthetic.

With thoughts of witches, pirates, and Halloween costumes in her mind, Ceri orders herself a Halloween themed drink. It has dry ice in it, giving it the effect of mist swirling out of the red liquid as if it were some kind of mystical witch’s brew. Very appropriate.

”Oh! Yeah, sure. Let’s see…” There’s something somewhat odd about hanging out with her boss at a party, and Ceri can’t exactly put her finger on what it is. After all, most of her friends are coworkers of hers, but this is different. Maybe it’s the fact that she actually has a lot of respect for him…

On the bright side, at least talking about work normalises the whole situation, removing a lot of the awkwardness.

”I’ve been collecting samples from a few legendary and mythical pokémon recently, and had some interesting results when looking into the effects of Springtide Storm on Shaymin. I’ve been trying to figure out what the connection between them might be, you know? …Pokérus-Y research is also moving steadily. I’ve managed to find a couple of methods of transmission. Oh! Have you heard the rumours about the Delphox that’s been handing out these supposed “potions” that make your pokémon Illumina? I got my hands on one of those philters and I’m running tests on it. I think we might be able to synthesise our own version of it.”

Her work for the M.A.G.M.A Division involves many different research projects, but in one way or the other, all of them centre around Ceri’s areas of expertise. The passion in her voice is almost tangible – this i what she loves doing.

First trial of the M.A.G.M.A Division's SYNTHESIZED VERSION OF THE PHILTER OF LUMINESCENCE, intended to be capable of artificially causing pokémon to mutate and gain ILLUMINA characteristics. SUBJECT IA2 was dosed with the standard Philter of Luminescence formula, while SUBJECT IA3 was dosed with M.A.G.M.A’s synthesized formula. Given that both subjects were of the same species and almost identical in age, size, and weight, the results were expected to be identical.

Upon consuming the solution, SUBJECT IA2 – a standard Vulpix – begun a metamorphosis just as SUBJECT IA1 did during TRIAL #1. All alterations to SUBJECT IA2's physical structure after consuming the solution indicate that the Philter of Luminescence has SUCCESSFULLY GRANTED ILLUMINA CHARACTERISTICS TO SUBJECT IA1.

Upon consumption of the solution, SUBJECT IA3 began a much slower metamorphosis. A pattern akin to that of an ILLUMINA POKÉMON developed all over its body, lacking the usual intensity. One minute after consumption the subject began to CONVULSE and its HEART RATE CRITICALLY INCREASED. It soon PASSED AWAY. Footage annexed.

This version of the formula has been deemed a FAILURE. It's likely that the unidentified components of the Philter of Luminescence are part of what stabilizes it to prevent such results. Refer to annexed analysis of its formulation.

It’s at this point that Ceri faces what some may consider a dilemma. The experiment had been a failure, the subject is suffering, and thus it only makes sense to put it down and schedule a necropsy to find out exactly what happened. Some would say it’s the right thing to do. Ceri, however, wonders what other effects the synthesised philter might have.

If the Vulpix is able to push past the pain, will its metamorphosis be completed?

Unlike Bee, she does not suffer from morbid curiosity. It’s her desire to understand that pushes her forward; her desire to achieve something incredible right here in this lab. She’s getting so close. She can feel it. She can see the signs of the Illumina Phenomenon showing themselves all over the body of the Vulpix…

The more vivid the pattern becomes, the louder its cries, yet they fall on deaf ears.

It convulses violently, looking up at BARNABY FINCH with wide eyes while foam-like drool falls onto the steel table.

Ceri watches through it all, only remembering Bee is there with her when looking away to check the pokémon’s vitals on the nearby equipment.

”Oh… You can go if you want. I doubt it’ll make it. There must have been something among the unidentified components that stabilised the formula… Still not sure what, though. I’ll need to go back to the drawing board.”

Still, even if failure, much can be learned.

It takes a moment and some smart coercion, but soon enough the Vulpix are drinking. Last time, when Ceri had given the philter to her Ivysaur, the transformation had begun immediately, as if the effects were instantaneous.

Cameras record even the slightest detail when Bee’s Vulpix begins to change as has been expected, but the researcher’s attention is mostly on its unnamed counterpart.

It too begins to change, although perhaps more subtly. There’s the first hints of an illumina pattern, its coloration growing lighter, yet the pokémon itself doesn’t look pleased at all. It soon starts to cry and whimper…

”Hmm… That’s not good…”

She doesn’t intervene; allowing the process to continue even when the pokémon is clearly suffering.

Bee asks her about the specifics of her version of the Philter of Luminescence, but while Ceri had found the process of replicating it to be terribly exciting (and sometimes mildly frustrating) and while she could go on and on about every step, they don’t have the time to have their work derailed by discussions of such nature.

That being the case, she reaches for her tablet, tapping the screen a few times before handing it to the executive with a triumphant grin.

”All details on the formula are right there if you wanna have a look. There’s certain components of the original philter we haven’t managed to identify just yet. So… We’ll see how this goes!”

This time, since she’s dealing with two subjects and not one, she opts for placing the concoctions in petri dishes that are then placed before both vulpine pokémon.

”Wow, not even a ‘Hi’?” The researcher chides Bee when he makes her into the lab, tutting. She’s joking, of course, as is made obvious by the way she laughs only a few seconds later.

Out of all pokémon, they’ll be working with Vulpix today, which definitely isn’t what Ceri would prefer. Still, it’s inevitable: it’s a simple species with a clear evolution line that shouldn’t display anything unexpected when converted into an Illumina pokémon. She had prepared for this, having taken her strongest allergy medication and even donning on a face mask.

”Your Vulpix will be given the regular philter. This one, though…” From a simple pokéball like any other, a second Vulpix is released, also Kantonian and of similar weight and height when compared to Bee’s. ”This one will be given our synthesised version of it.”

She’s certain they copied the formula as closely as possible, but there’s the possibility a few ingredients might be different and that the change could have catastrophic effects…

Admittedly, the prospect of failure bothers her more than whatever may happen to the pokémon.

Ceri would never say no to a party, and she especially would never say no to a Halloween party. This, however, is a party for the M.A.G.M.A Division, so out of all the costumes she had prepared for this years’ Halloween (it might be her last, so it makes sense to go out in style, given that it's the holiday she loves the most and everything), she had wisely decided to wear the… least revealing one. She’s dressed as a witch, with a large pointed hat and everything.

The wisdom of her choice soon becomes obvious, for out of all people, it’s Cillian Quinn that approaches her while she’s in the middle of chatting with some lab techs.

”Oh… Hi!” Ceri greets him and the Chatot alike, giving the little bird a bright smile. She’s not oblivious to the looks her companions give her, nor to the way they scatter as if they were afraid to get in the underboss’ way. Ugh, losers. ”Here or would you rather go somewhere quieter? Music’s pretty loud…Nice costume, by the way! Very fitting! Guardian of the Seas and all of that, no?”

There’s a wink and a light laugh. Is she teasing him? Yes, yes she is. Some would think that the margaritas are getting to her, but those who know Ceri also know that this is just how she is. After all, she does have the audacity to constantly send Gavin emails filled with emojis.

It’s just like when it was discovered that Ultra Wormhole radiation had affected Passho berries and that all pokémon that consumed them were suddenly capable of using extremely powerful moves. Everyone in the entire region began planting Passho berries in their gardens and feeding them to their pokémon. Nobody questioned what the berries were really doing to make it so pokémon could use such moves.
