Do people usually just approach others because they happen to be at a place they frequent? It sounds like an extrovert sort of thing to Percy, like something someone like Pace Mahmoud would do with no hesitation at all. Him, on the other hand? No way. Unnecessary annoyances are the last thing he needs.

Just as he says this, the Sableye wanders off in an apparent rush, excitedly pointing at a nearby Honedge. He even smiles, displaying sharp fangs. The ghostly blade approaches as well, and after what seems like a short exchange between the two pokémon, Jouyl grabs the sword by the hilt and starts swinging it around happily.

Shouldn’t they contact someone who knows more about these things? The IT department or something? That would probably be a wise move, but it’s also all too likely that whoever they contact would take some time to make it here, and even more to deal with the Porygon attacking their server.

Usually, it could be considered his job to get people to talk; to get them to share their opinions about things no matter how controversial those opinions might be. Pace Mahmoud, however, needs little coaxing, and explanations flow easily even when he never even verbally asked for such things. Is he good at understanding people’s expressions and demeanour, or is he just desperate to be liked?

He knows that’s not exactly what Pace meant, but there’s something ever so slightly amusing about teasing him. Is it cruel? Maybe, but that’s just how Percy is.

If I didn’t think so, I wouldn’t live here.” There’s many more reasons than that, of course, he sees little point in going into details. The “Unovan-friendly” names for cities tend to be as close as possible to direct translations of their local name, and as such, all it takes is knowing the language to make an accurate guess. Like how ‘Mio’ means ‘waterway’ and ‘Canalave’ is just a combination of ‘canal’ and ‘lave’.

Of course, he could say all that to Pace, but instead Percy chooses to simply stare at him like he just said something incredibly silly.

This seems only intensified when the other comments on his hometown.

If Percy had any less self-control than what he actually does have, he’d roll his eyes, because Pace’s response is as predictable as it is flirtatious and wrong. There are no right people with whom to get lost. Not in Percy’s own opinion, at least, and of course that to him his own opinion matters the most.

Truth be told, the first thought that crosses Percy’s mind is something along the lines of ‘Is this kid trying to hit on me?’, because yes, that’s exactly what Izydor Baranowski looks like to him: a kid. Short, baby-faced, and with the style of someone who apparently hasn’t quite gotten over his “rebellious teen phase” just yet, but of course, Percy will always be incredibly judgemental in his ways.

It’s because of this thought that an eyebrow is raised, his gaze never leaving the younger man.

”Kind of. Why?”

It’s not like he has any interest in knowing if the other frequents the route or not, after all, and why would he want to bother with following what most people would call normal social protocol? Most of the time, unless he’s on the job or talking to someone that interests him, Percy simply can’t be bothered with things like those.

But from behind the journalist leg, his Sableye stares up at the stranger with its gemlike gaze, and then, it even gives him a shy wave.

As if to join in on the collective discomfort expressed by their colleagues, Percy grimaces when hearing the obnoxious sounds coming out of Barnaby’s laptop.

”What the hell? Make it stop.”

Of course, the Kalosian doesn’t need him to say as much in order to attempt to do just that as if in a panic, but all of his frantic efforts are rendered fruitless, for pure chaos seems to now be in control of the device. Pure chaos in the form of Porygon 2 that soon appear upon his screen, apparently taking it upon themselves to corrupt files.

It’s only then that Percy remembers the way his own phone’s screen flickered strangely a moment ago, and bringing it out again, he’s greeted by an all too similar sight.

”Shit…” It’s rare for him to swear, but he sure does this time, setting his mug on the table as he stares at the Porygon bobbing back and forth as if it were within his phone. Wouldn’t that disturb the Rotom? Apparently so, because the screen soon turns off.

”If it’s your laptop and my phone… Think it’s our servers. Aren’t those downstairs?”

He sees it. How could he not see it? The shrug, the sadness in Pace’s smile, the signs of a pain that won’t be easily spoken of. Percy has learned to recognize things like those in people, and because he has it is that he can guess that there story behind all this is one that still affects the ranger greatly. How did Pace lose this good friend of his? Why is it that they don’t keep in touch?

For now, his curiosity remains unquenched, but at least Pace’s next remark is enough to distract him because of how fucking absurd it sounds to Percy’s ears.

Ecruteak City wasn’t particularly big, nor was it a particularly dangerous place. Even during Rocket’s attempt at taking over the region, not many tragedies happened in the northern areas of Johto, and as such, it wasn’t difficult to figure out exactly what the boy was talking about.
