Memo hurls a Pokeball at the offending amphibian and his Shiftry shoots forth, slicing through wet, blue skin with a vengeful leaf blade. The Quagsire makes a pained bubbling noise and flops, blood sluicing down its front, turning a sickly shade of purple.

“Mother father and holy son, Maelstrom, you didn’t need to--,” Memo slaps across his body looking for Zuza’s Pokeball. The Galarian Rapidash heals the fallen down Quagsire while Maelstrom, unbothered, tends the baby Passho.

When the wound is closed, Memo draws the Quagsire into a Pokeball. “Phew. Couple minutes sooner and I’d have lost it.”

The shiny Mimikyu was equal parts scarier and cuter than its normal counterpart. Memo leaned over it, pointing down. “Lookit it’s little tail! It looks like a little leaf or a stick or something. Like it’s pretending. Cuuuuuute!”

The sketchy face on the gray sheet began to curve downard. Luckily, Coqui noticed, and knocked it off-kilter with earth power, ribbiting in alarm.

The shiny Yamask hadn’t looked much different, but Memo thought the shiny Nickit was almost better at camouflage than its normal-colored counterparts. Insomuch as he almost stepped on it.

He stumbled upon the Tinkaton a ways back from Mt. Pyre proper, tucked in behind a grove of old, gnarled trees. She had assembled a crude, rounded arch structure from various pieces of scrap metal, and stood before it, hammer laying over her shoulder. One of the pieces of metal still had faded writing on it. There were Corviknight feathers tucked into the top, and it was mounted with a giant bird skull.

It looked a little like a grave.

When she noticed his approach, she tightened her hands on her hammer, and he held up his own in a placating gesture.

“Mourning, huh?” he asked, once she had relaxed, coming to stand next to her. After a brief moment where she seemed to be arguing with herself, she nodded. “It’s very beautiful. I’m sure whomever it’s for would be very honored.”

Sombra joined them, and the three of them sat in silence for a long time. After a while, the Tinkaton dropped her hammer off her shoulder, and seemed to sigh.

“One of the important parts of mourning is the healing, after,” Memo pointed out, almost as an aside, as he turned to go. “I think a lot of people forget that part.”

He’d returned to the main path with Sombra when there was stomping through the undergrowth behind them. The Tinkaton came into the sunlight, hammer gleaming, Corviknight skull tucked under her other arm, and fell into step with them on their climb up the mountain slopes.

He was familiar with Galarian Yamask. They were the variant from his home region, after all, though he’d always given them a very wide berth because of his religious upbringing and their belief about ghosts and spirits.

“The shiny form doesn’t look too awful different, does it?” he asked, thinking aloud, as Coqui dropped a hypnosis over the Yamask, its heavy stone thudding soft against the dirt, before being subsumed in a safari ball.

Memo very rarely came to Mt. Pyre. His better half was faintingly terrified of ghosts, and this place had them more than most.

But there was a quiet peace, here. One that got him thinking about his family. It had been over a year since the Galarian cataclysm and he still didn’t know if they were alive. Part of him didn’t care at all, and part of him cared too much.

The Porygon almost blends in, disappearing into an equally as cotton-candy colored advertisement for energy drinks. It zips over as Memo walks past, nudging him with curiosity.

He imagines he’d walk ahead and the thing would drift off, but it sticks close-by, and by the time he’s finished his route, it’s perched on his shoulder, like his Chatot does.
