YOU'RE NOT ALONE

“I don’t… actually know what happened, after you stepped into the light,” Guillermo says, voice going ghost quiet in the hospital room, falling under the shuffling rustle of feathers outside and the transfer of voices in the hallway. He doesn’t even know if Alex remembers that bit. He swallows, trembling a little.

“So I don’t know… what happened,” he reiterates, lamely, fighting off the tears as they threaten to spill. He takes a deep breath, forces himself to focus, recenter. “I just know that when we woke up on the sand, you started bleeding and. I brought you here.” He didn’t want applause or approval or affection or pride for doing the right thing, the thing he knew he had to do. He was just going through the motions of not letting someone he loved die. It was literally the bare minimum.

He was so mad at himself.

“Yeah, Kaida was there. A lot of people were.” He forces himself to remember, eyes squeezing shut tight enough to hurt. “Um, Captain Wledig was there. Ms. Livy, from HBS. We got separated from most of them, though.” A shaky breath rumbles through him, threatening to tear him apart. “Yeah, the-- the stupid trains. The second terminal. Someone got the answer wrong so on top of there being the trains there were two angry legendaries attacking us.”

Alex’s hand finds his and Memo has to stop himself from jerking back, because he feels, physically, revolting. For how he’d acted. For what he’d said and did. As it is he can’t force himself to squeeze back, another quivering breath escaping him. “Then you jumped in front of the train with your-- with your feather?” His voice curls up in a question.

Silence expands. Then, barely a whisper: “I was so scared, Alex. I thought you were going to die.”

It’s like a dam breaking.

"I-- don't know?" he said, panicking a little. "I-- I want this?” He set a hand on Alex’s hip, thumb skating along the skin of his lower abdomen. “Togetherness? I want to-- take care of you? And, just, I don't know. Be allowed to love you? Be yours? Belong?" The words are falling out of him now, stream of consciousness, old hurts finally allowed to fester and heal.

"I don't-- I don't need-- if you're talking about, sex, I don't. Need anything other than to make you happy, and I mean that. I've never--," never felt reciprocated pleasure before "--needed to. Receive, from anyone, and I don't honestly know if I can."

Memo blinked at him. “Sénon Game is my cousin. On my mother’s side. He’s the one that suggested I come to Hoenn and enlist.”

Alex got a little bit sad for the next bit, mentioning a dear friend, and Memo had a horrible feeling that dear friend wasn’t around anymore. Which, for some reason, only succeeded in making him more angry, because that was another faultless crime that Alex was going to internalize and blame himself for and--

Memo exhaled a steady one, two, three four. He was letting his bitterness at talking of home color his other thoughts and feelings.

“Glimwood Tangle?” he said, instead, trying to recover some of his natural positivity (the kind Galar had tried so hard to beat out of him). “Yeah, it’s nice. Most of the non-city parts of Galar are nice.”

He returned Alex’s grin with a knowing one of his own and a wink.

“Absolutely. They’ll come home with a whole flock.”

He tried not to let the disappointment show when his flimsy slap-dash answer was shot out of the air like a cheap clay skeet. He did, however, visibly twitch a little, like he’d been struck with the ghost of a slap.

If there was anything Memo didn’t really want to talk about, it was this.

“I’m not lying,” he insisted, trying really hard to not let his tone get defensive. "I--," he started, then paused, because he was starting to realize that I want to make you happy was the canned response he'd employed with all his partners, such as they were.

And, yeah, this time he meant it-- but it was still the same thing he said to strangers in a bathroom stall for a buck or bent over the back of a couch in exchange for a place to sleep. And Alex deserved better than that.

He frowned. "I don't-- understand the question," he confessed, chin on Alex's chest, staring into his beautiful lavender eyes. "Why can't I just want to make you happy? I don't need anything else."

“You have broken ribs, love, be careful,” Memo warned, passing on what the doctors had discovered. “They did a CT scan to check for internal bleeding and you’ve gotten at least one liter of blood transfused.” He wanted to reach out and touch Alex’s hair, but he just pressed his fist into his thigh, sat, and was useless. “You’ve been through a lot,” he repeated, not very helpfully.

“Hold on.” Memo got up and stepped to the light switch, dimming it down as low as it could go, then heading around the bed to tug the curtains closed-- pausing briefly at the horde of avians perched outside. “Sorry, gang. I’ll open them soon,” he apologized, then sealed the curtains, bathing the room in darkness. The ambient light from the hallway lit everything faintly lavender.

“How much do… do you remember?” Memo asked, returning to his seat. “Or… what’s the last thing?” He swallowed. “Or we don’t have to talk about it right now, if you don’t feel up to it.”

“Yeah, Sénon also said something about how wacky Hoenn was, but I definitely wasn’t listening to him,” Memo says with a dismissive air. “He’s my cousin, he’s supposed to try and intimidate me. Also, Rangers get to see some weird shit, you know? Couldn’t possibly be the norm. But it seems to be a collective opinion amongst everyone here, and it’s also fucking true, so.”

Hoenn was weird as shit. It had taken, like, six days for him to realize that, and, in turn, realize that everyone maybe wasn’t as full of shit as he’d assumed they’d been.

It’s time for another eyeroll, and this time, the smile he forces is caustic. “Spikemuth is, honestly, just garbage.” He shrugged. “Some of the older towns are… quaint. It’s not my favorite place I’ve ever been.”

He let the acid simmer out of him for a second. When he speaks again, his voice is quiet.

“There’s lots of Wooloo. You’d like them.”

"I want to make you happy."

He snuggles back into Alex’s chest, smile turned up for maximum adorableness, desperately hoping that this answer was good enough and knowing, with a terrible sinking feeling, that it isn’t.

But he has to try. He wouldn’t be Guillermo if he didn’t try to deflect before facing any sort of real feelings.

Memo joined Alex in the eye-rolling, knowing it wasn’t just Littleroot that had its fair share of supremely weird bullshit heaped on it. What Hoenn lacked in seasons it made up for in sheer nonsense.

“Lars did try to warn me when I signed on that shit got weird around here,” Memo said, taking another bite of his ice cream bar. Of course, that had been before the man himself had manifested some weird ice powers and jumped in front of a bullet for him. Pot, meet kettle.

“Galar doesn’t really get… cold, necessarily. Just windy and rainy and gray and wet.” He shrugged. “It gets super hot for like, three weeks a year and everyone just collectively suffers because we all live in old ass stone houses barely modernized enough to have indoor plumbing, and we’re all fucking poor.” He doesn’t mean for his voice to get so venomous, it just happens; he does manage to soften the edges out of it when he looks at Alex.

“I’d love to see it.”

He noticeably does not return the offer.

“Forever, if you’d let me,” Memo promised, tilting his head up so his nose nuzzled into the pulse at Alex’s throat, taking a deep, measured inhale, exhale; feeling safe, feeling comfortable, feeling warm, sleepy, lovely, home. "If that's what it took."

Hoping that when this time rolled around next year this memory could help stave off some of the nightmares that lurked in Alex’s closet.

His eyes peeked the tiniest bit open-- he was already heading on his way to sleep. “What’s up?”

“Scrambled eggs are good,” Memo agreed, “and pepper makes everything better. Pepper, onions, garlic. The holy Paldean trifecta.” He snorted his laughter, eyes falling half closed. “My sister once dared me to eat an onion like an apple and I did it. Apparently my abuela used to do that, too.”

He fell silent and let Alex wax on poetically about colors. It was actually kind of adorable and perfect, how detailed he got, how into it he got. And it didn’t surprise him, not a single iota, that Alex’s two favorite colors were both colors of the sky.

He couldn’t stop himself, as he looked up and locked eyes with Alex, once he was done going on about the hues of the sunset and all the other lovely things; he cracked his biggest, shit-eatingest grin and said:
