Everything is hell. That’s it, that’s all it is, everything is hell, it’s all crashing down around them.

Gwyar Wledig takes down an entire legendary all by his damn self and Memo can’t do anything.

But Zuza did. Zuza saved the day-- mostly, because Alex still gets hit, hurt? And Memo thinks he’s going to pass out because he can’t breathe, he can’t breathe, he can’t breathe.

His cry is swallowed in the roar and rush of the action around him and before he can do anything Zuza’s gone and Alex is gone and everyone is gone and he feels like he’s falling but he’s not, really; he’s not moving. He can’t see and then he can and then he wishes he couldn’t.

It’s him. It’s him, he’s staring at himself, but his eyes are blank and he’s not there, he’s not home. It reminds him, sickeningly, of when his parents used to get really mad at him-- the Memo he’d become when he was so very scared of someone who was supposed to protect him. He’d hide the important pieces away and present this face to the belt, the shoe, the open hand, the closed fist.

That’s what’s staring at him, now.

Then it’s gone. It’s gone and they’re standing, again, all of them together, and Guillermo only takes a second to inhale a deep breath before he’s grabbing Alex and spinning him, assessing him for damage; he’s not crying, not really, but there are tears in his eyes and he can’t speak. He knows he should check on the others, on Kaida Adachi and the people around them, but he's so scared. He's so scared.

He can talk a big talk and walk a brave walk but in the end he's never gone through anything like this. None of it. Maybe the next time around he'll be more useful, maybe the next time around he'll have better ideas, make the right decisions, and protect the people he needs to protect.

But right now, he's terrified.

Remiel answers his question, but he doesn’t seem very keen on doing so. Memo tilts his head in confusion, vaguely recalling something about scientists being hesitant to share their discoveries or the glory that comes from them. But maybe that had just been in a movie or something?

“It’s just… Hoenn seems so new, compared to Galar. Everything there is old. Dated. Or it seems that way.” It makes him laugh, the thought, because he’s thinking directly of Wedgehurst and the ancient gable architecture on the Pokemon lab. He only saw it once, a long time ago. “It’s just weird to think that places like Hoenn have ancient history, too.”

Remiel deals swiftly with a Clauncher just as there’s a loud splashing noise from the outer curve of the Atoll. Hydra is picking a fight with something-- there’s a lash of her purple tail as she coils, serpent-like, in the water.

Just after, it looks as though a great wave has launched out of the sea-- but it’s a Mantine, attempting to escape the angry and overprotective mama dragon. A dragon pulse blasts against the ray’s pale underside, giving it more lift, and sending it flopping, upside down, onto the beach, scattering rocks and fragments of coral with the force of its landing. Memo rescues it in a Pokeball.

The irony.

“I was always more of an arts kid,” Memo adds, unsure of why. Maybe so Remi doesn’t feel like he’s trying to move in on his turf, or something? “But Spikemuth’s like that. Can’t throw a Pokeball without hitting a band in someone’s mom’s garage.” He meant to sound bored but it comes out with more venom than anticipated.

Guillermo’s eyes go a little bit fuzzy as he traces the images flashing on the screen before him. The voice of the operator-- if, indeed, that is who he is-- takes on a slightly mocking tone, mechanical laughter grinding the pieces of Memo’s spine. He is caught between two trains (pun intended, but, like, later) of thought, one of which being oh I wish I could deck this prick and the other being that’s interesting, I didn’t know that.

He falls against Alex, slipping from the confines of his grip, standing back to back with the taller man as he turns to watch the datascape around them shift and change. Buildings and great circular objects straight out of Valerian take shape around them. Then again comes that mocking voice and Memo’s mind, once again unhelpfully, divests between wanting to find and serve the operator a knuckle sandwich and conjuring pictures of Mr. T saying I pity the Cresselia, fool.

The Darkrai’s attacks cause the air to worble and bend, like looking through heatwaves, though the dark energy fogging off the spheres turns anything it touches completely cold. Not only that, but the Cresselia falls amongst them like an assassin, waving her arms and slicing at the air.

“Huh,” Memo says, as his brain plateaus in that place that can hold no more panic, “I didn’t even realize she had arms.”

Before he can conjure any more of his unhelpful thoughts out loud, he’s being spun around, and Alex is leaning forward. For a brief, stupid second, Memo thinks it’s meant to be a kiss-- like a we’re about to die kiss-- but before anything of the like can happen, Alex is shoving something into his grip and warning him not to make use of it unless things become extremely dire.

Memo has the decency to look confused. “More dire than this?”

All hell is, quite literally, breaking loose. The two canine figures are barreling towards the small idiot who said the wrong thing. Everyone is throwing up disabling moves or protective screens and Alex--

--Alex steps in front of the train?!?!?!

Memo’s brain short-circuits. There’s a tiny little piece of him at the back of it that knows he needs to trust Alex and that he probably has a handle on what he’s doing but that little piece is buried under the very real weight of Object of eternal affections. Train. Does not compute. Memo(Logic).exe has crashed!

You know, to stay on theme.

“What--- what are you doing?!”

He’s torn in two (unequal) pieces, one wanting to help others and the larger piece desperately needing to protect and help Alex. Somewhere he’s kicking himself for bringing a giant fish to a gun fight.

Luckily, his patronus unicorn has more brains than he does. At the risk of being deleted and leaving him only armed with said giant fish, Zuza appears beside him in a burst of light. Channeling all the panicked love billowing in Memo’s body, she throws a forceful Psychic in the way of the trains, hoping to dislodge them from their tracks-- or stop them completely. She winds the psychic around Alex with a single break in the neon-pink shield, allowing him to point and aim what that feather do right through it, like a gun turret.
