OPENING THE SPLASHFEST



IN MID-AUGUST, a large lighting truss structure surrounds a grand stage with a runway. In fact, it is the same venue as the SWIMSUIT CONTEST. Summery cutouts of Ludicolo, Pelipper and Gorebyss set against backdrops of splashing waves and palm trees flank the stage. Protective fencing keeps the crowd from coming too close. One will be able to notice that security has been intensified compared to previous years.[break][break]

Commissioner stands before the standing microphone. Bodyguards and their Gardevoir conduct overwatch nearby, their practiced postures gilded by Hoennian sun. "i have come today not for my own recreation, but to promise you that celebration and joy will not perish during these dire times. our region has survived cataclysm before, and will survive cataclysm again."[break][break]

She affirms that the LEAGUE IS TAKING ALL MEASURES TO PREVENT THE METEOROID IMPACT. That the League's brightest and best can be trusted to ensure the region's survival. Her speech concludes on that note.[break][break]

As expected, the audience response is mixed. While others offer praise and applause, some heckle the Commissioner. They DECRY THE POSSIBLE DESTRUCTION OF ANOTHER WORLD... If only they knew, what else was at stake.[break][break]

Regardless, continues with little disturbance ebbing across her face:[break][break]

"and now, i would like to introduce one of the league's finest, elite four member and beloved idol, !" Dahlia takes several strides back; her bodyguards follow before she is escorted back stage.[break][break]


WHEN MELODY MIRO TAKES THE STAGE, the crowd riles up with excitement. Musicians quickly assume their positions; instruments quickly strummed or played for a punchy soundcheck. As the idol moves forward to greet the summer audience, the backtrack springs to life. "this one's dedicated to !"[break][break]

[break][break] a few reporters had come up to him earlier, asking about his direction on WYNDON CROSS INC. and where he planned to take their next step. he had given vague responses, none that were remotely interesting enough, before the reporters had then gone off and run after much more juicier topics — perhaps harranging actual league officials about their opinion on the upcoming meteor.

[break][break] he licks the side of his popsicle thoughtfully as music bursts from the speakers and takes to the stage. it's been a while since jayden has seen her in person — outside of her rocket prison cell — and it almost seems to be as if nothing has ever happened. well, a lot has transpired since last year's summer's tournament, so jayden's not particularly surprised.

[break][break] dahlia speaks on how endurable hoenn is. how many catalysts they've all faced. it's a good statement — if even fabricated. he wonders if it had been like this in kanto — when he'd been too young to care.

Security buzz around Goode like a swarm of bees protecting their queen, barriers erected to keep the swelling crowd at bay.

"Back at it again with ANOTHER Livestream! Here in Sunny Slateport, at 's concert!" he announced to his phone showing off the Diva for a moment. The time on this would be limited considering, he'd gotten so much time with Melody personally the night before during their sleepover. Things had been a little tense on his part, being so close to Cobalion, but he'd made it out alive. [break][break]

"Though I'm pretty sure there's an ACTUAL livestream just focused on the performance, so this one won't be running too long~" That's right he had other things to do. He broke out into a grin as he spotted one of his friends before throwing up a peace sign at the IG Live and heading off. Maybe he'd jump back on if something interesting happened but he wasn't getting paid for live blogging a concert. "Michail!!" he shouted to get the guy's attention through out this crowd. He shoved his way through, yelping a quick, "Oh, sorry!" as he smacked into before very excitedly clinging to his friend. The hug is released just as quickly as it had appeared. "Finally!! Kept thinkin' I could never live without you by my side~!!" he said, managing to sing along with Melody at just the right moment. "How's your Splashfest been? Have you hung out with @illieana or or or ?" Shout out to boat gang. "I've been running around trying to get as much free stuff as possible." he added with a laugh.

Elisabeth preferred to blend into crowds. She stood to the side, watching politely with a drink in hand as spoke on the importance of celebration and joy even in Hoenn's darkest hour.

To that, the florist just sipped at her mojito mildly.

There was truth in the concept, certainly. That one could not spend all of one's days agonizing in despair and misery. Elisabeth knew that reality intimately enough. At the same time, the incoming meteor and the heat of the barrier surrounding Hoenn were difficult to avoid thinking about for too long.

Her green eyes cut across the crowd to , whose disguise she recognized even at a distance. She lifted the drink to him silently as 's song began to play. It was a song she didn't know, like most of the music in the region. Something new to associate with the new memories of this place.

Elisabeth wondered what he made of all this merriment as the world stood on the brink of collapse.

In her mind, she supposed it was as good a way to spend the time as anything else.

Zev was not a fan of concerts. Too many bodies pressed together hindered swift movement, and the darkness, flashing lights, and loud noise made it difficult to see or hear important information. So he hung back with , pretending not to know the man he stood next to, scrolling through his phone with an air of boredom.

He did listen, however, to every word of the Commissioner's speech.

It felt hollow to Zev, full of empty promise and false hope. The barrier around Hoenn was real, so Zev had to begrudgingly believe a meteor might actually be falling toward the region. But to think the League could divert its course into another world?

Zev was a skeptic at heart. He'd believe it when he saw it.

The hitman raised his gaze from his phone as left the stage and the concert finally began. As he did, he caught 's silent salute. Though he locked eyes with her, he did not smile, for the Zev Harcourt who owned a Slateport City bar had never met the florist from Petalburg.

He looked back down at his phone to read the next news story as began to sing.

Dahlia says her piece, and Derek can't help but react to it with a rolling of the eyes. The region survives. But not everyone. Certainly not everyone.

Even if her plan went perfectly, at least one Hoenn will be destroyed.

These thoughts are put aside as Melody is introduced. He'd never been to one of her events live, and this one seemed to be dedicated to Matias. As he listened to the lyrics, the gym leader couldn't help but imagine why.

Same old dysfunctional league.

Having connections good friends sure pays off. A few messages exchanged with dear had earned Mars two front row seats to the Splashfest concert. Sure, he could have just bought them, but there was always the risk that they’d sell out, and Mars is not a man who cares for standing in a crowd. Only the best is acceptable.

From here, he and his companion have a perfect view of and her plethora of guards, and not a single word of her speech is misheard or missed.

”...celebration and joy will not perish during these dire times” Mars quotes quietly, as if pondering on this statement. With a slight smirk, he leans in closer to whisper to . ”Sure is a great way to keep the people distracted, huh? You gotta hand it to the League.”

And yet, he still claps when the commissioner finishes her speech, ignoring all yelled complaints and smiling at the sight of taking to the stage.

That song sure is a choice.

If only for a second, Mars frowns just so slightly, wondering if something had happened to Melody. Then again, it’s just a song, isn’t it?

the mainstage. it wasn’t the main event for the splashfest, obviously, and for a second jupiter was torn on staying far, far away from it or venturing closer. after their meeting with their ex, they didn’t want to be spotted in case she was somehow on that stage. meeting her in the crowd had been bad enough— being another face in the crowd? jupiter hated the idea of it.[break][break]

but curiosity kills the cat, they suppose, or the rockstar in this case. people are gathering around, anyways, and they find it too easy to get swept up in the crowd. it’s not something they’re used to, and it’s strange. not in a bad way, that they can tell— just….strange.[break][break]

the commissioner is the first one to speak, reassuring the crowd that hoenn had survived once and would survive again. frowning, deeper, as the crowd starts to be torn between cheering or booing, jupiter tries to push down their doubt that hoenn will be spared, even with everything the league is doing.[break][break]

despite themselves, everything telling them not to, jupiter finds themselves looking for ’s familiar pink.

Splash fest had been a buffet of top 10's and quick articles to punch out during the lulling summer days. With the meteor heading straight their way, it was important to fill the timid spaces between world-shattering news with something, well, not world-shattering.

Garbed in a floral sun dress, the woman peruse through the crowded dance floor, eyes hungrily drinking at every flash of color, every glint of suspicion, every group of interest. 's speech had done wonders to the crowd-- eliciting both the best and worst emotions out the tightest nooks of their features. It paired ironically well with 's choice of song.

"Ooo, watch out!" Slipping her arm between a man and a clueless young blonde, Penelope barely managed to stop them from colliding. The man -- the culprit -- gave a nervous chuckle before slinking away, leaving the two women alone. "Close one," The reported gave a sly smile, "So, how are you enjoying splashfest?"

[attr="class","skullbody"]As much of a reputation as Isaac had for being loud and bombastic, he also knew when to keep his mouth shut. This was one of those times. After all, plenty of the people in crowd were already saying what he was thinking. A boo or a jeer sneaked into the crowd for every few cheers spent Dahlia's way. It was a more split public opinion than Isaac expected, frankly. But who could blame them?[break][break]

The meteor prevention methods seemed to be the least popular part of the speech, with quite a few demands about the safety of other worlds rising above the murmur of the crowd. However, the idea of partying until the world ended? That part, at least, seemed pretty popular. Maybe the people of Hoenn didn't really need an excuse to get fucked up, but they'd sure as heck take one that came their way.[break][break]

Isaac had been keeping near the rough and tumble parts of the crowd. A lot of those from the wrong side of Slateport's tracks were critical of League even in the best times. In the worst of times like this? "Gee, they really broke the bank on that speech, huh?" Isaac muttered, a gruff construction worker type scoffing in agreement at his comment. "Shit, if they put half the money they spent on bikini inspectors into trying to fix this place up, maybe we'd finally get some progress around here."[break][break]

There were a few murmurs of agreement, mostly from other down-on-their-luck Slateport residents feeling pushed out by the town's festivities. Mission accomplished. Isaac kept a close ear on their conversation, trying to keep his finger on the pulse of Slateport's forgotten sons.[break][break]

Or, at least, he tried to. But then an Elite 4 member strutted on stage and started calling out a member of the Silphs in song form, and how the hell could he pass that juicy drama up? No wonder the League was a clownshow, if this was the circus they were putting out for the world to see.

Felix had ultimately avoided most, if not all, of the splash fest activities this year. Work had eaten away at most of his spare time -- not that he minded it. There wasn't a single day where he would willingly choose surfing on a mantine over watching over a trade deal, or meeting with notable clientele in the area.

Dressed in a black floral pattern button-down and beige shorts, the man slowly slipped from the back of the crowd, dull eyes surveying his surroundings.

Some faces look familiar -- specifically and 's, who took up the right side of his peripheral vision -- while the others mainly paled into the background. Though, there was one face he hadn't expected to see.

"How are you enjoying it?"

He could've been referencing the music, or the event, or even just the afternoon breeze.

When listening to the commissioner's speech, the words leave her mouth before she even realises she’s speaking them, and when she does, horror overtakes her expression for a short second there. She looks to her right in order to make sure no one she knows overheard her. She looks to her left, and there’s . FUCK.

”Oh…” Pink blossoms in her cheeks, but then she just sighs, because truth be told, she’s still kind of annoyed at Derek after all this time. They don’t get along and perhaps they never will, that’s just how it is. ”Derek.”
