Memo had become a different person when his compassion had been deleted in the Cloud, all those long months ago. And for a long time, the awful images of what he’d done, what he’d said, had lived at the forefront of his brain, bright like screaming sirens, hot irons he used to torture himself and make sure he never forgot.

But Alex had been a balm. Alex had told him it was okay because he didn’t remember, anyway. It was okay, he was forgiven, it was okay, it was okay.

Over time, Memo had let himself forget, a little. Let the edges seam together, scar up, and fade. Just a little. Just enough to give him the smallest bit of peace.

“I told you,” he said, trying to find his footing though the world around him was beginning to crumble and shake, “I told you I had been changed. That I should have been with you and protected you better. Verbatim, I’ve said that.” He swallowed, dropping his hands like they’d been burnt. “You told me it was alright. That it already happened. Why are you bringing it up now?”

Still, he can’t argue the truth when it is so shining and sharp.

“Yes. That’s why Gabe hates me. But I was different. I was changed.”

Memo was swung and battered by her convulsing, but all he could think of was how scared he was that he was going to lose himself again.

Memo hit the ground hard on his back and wheezed, recoiling and curling up like a Sandshrew. The Flutter Mane shrieked, an ear-piercing sound stuck somewhere between horror and glee.

It turned its gaze on Alex, preparing another attack, before its whole body shivered violently and it screamed again as Maelstrom’s extrasensoryrocked it.

But with the Shiftry’s attention turned from directing the dream smoke away, it began to crawl towards the two humans, seeping over Alex’s ankles and rapidly approaching Memo’s face.

He pushed himself up on one forearm and tried to suck air back into his lungs, staring at the foaming mist with wide eyes. The Flutter Mane, meanwhile, collected itself and shot a shadow ball at Memo’s Shiftry.

He sluices soap (scented like whiskey and smoke) from Alex’s shoulders with the warm bathwater, smoothing palms down his shoulders and arms.

“No matter what. Promise.”

The door creaks open and a dryer-warm, fluffy towel is plopped onto the bathroom floor. Memo kisses the back of Alex’s neck and reaches for the cottony fabric.

“Let’s get you dry and into bed.”

“You calm down!” he snapped, as their perfect little bedroom turned into a goop-infested warzone. He spent a lot of time in here doing many things and having it smell like rancid Swalot for weeks on end would put a real damper on those things.

Estornio’s whirlwind swept the Swalot up as flinging purple smears. Carina’s sweet scent perfumed the room but really just acted like bad air freshener.

The little Sableye flung open the window. The Swalot-tornado began to tip and turn towards the opening, rattling everything in the room and making the blackout curtains flare on their rods.

Memo frowned and looked out at the cloud choked sky. Having been in Hoenn for a little under two years, it was easy to get subsumed in the region’s chaos, and forget that there was an outside world.

A burst of static and scramble to action heralds the beginning of more pandemonium. Memo’s aching feet are moving before his brain has time to catch up, and he’s on Nike’s back and in the air, shooting over where the bogeys were last seen, flying low and swinging a dragon tail down amongst them.
